sanguenetti sounds like what the guy would be named in a Cop Movie and he's definitely the worst cop on the force. He's the super emotional guy, real good guy at heart, fun to have a beer with, but he's a loose cannon on the streets.

I can hear him in the Sarge's office having a shouting match with the blinds open and everyone just looking on.

Sarge would say something like SANGUENETTTTTIII I CANT HAVE YOU RUNNING AROUND LIKE A LOOSE CANNON OUT THERE.

Sanguinetti looks lost, no way we don't see McBain on Thursday. I don't care what anyone says, Semin is disgusting, just forcing it too much at times. J. Staal needs to realize he's not in Pitt anymore and doesn't have the same talent around him. Ward can't hold onto a puck. That PP unit is ridiculous, they're getting too cute though. I know we have so many middle of the road guys, but I think we just need to stack the top 6 as best we can, and try to move the 3rd line into more of an actual checking line instead of trying to balance everyone.

Defensively, we honestly just need to make a trade. We fucking need someone who can play defense and not worry about anything else. Just bring on someone instead of carrying seven guys around when five of them are offensive minded, and one of the remaining two is Jay Harrison. Jesus.

The Canes will face Enroth and not Miller for one of the games of the home and home. At first I would guess Miller gets the start down here, but I think the last time Enroth played at the RBC/PNC he had a great game including an AMAZING play without his helmet so I don't know who gets the start. The Sabres are a tough, gritty team for the first time since they had Razor and The Rat (Rob Ray and Matthew Barnaby) and the Canes are softer than the Michelin Man. At best the Canes get two points out of these two games, but 0 or 1 point is much more realistic.

What's the point of having two centers on the 4th line? And why would they even consider leaving Westgarth out when he's the only one who's willing to fuck shit up out there?

I don't want to pretend like Brent is something better than he is, but the dude got 12 goals and 12 assists playing on the 4th line last year. Why not make a checking line with him, Dwyer, and someone else? I honestly don't know which of the AHL guys has the most defensive upside to him, but throw them on there.

Leaving Jokinen out of the top 6 just takes away from his production. He's been pretty consistent about giving us a decent amount of assists/year. It'd be nice for him to be able to feed guys like Eric or Semin instead of Bowman and LaRose.

Westgarth was in the lineup last night and I don't recall him "fucking shit up." In fact, I don't recall him doing anything at all. Looks like he logged a whopping 3:22 of ice time. My guess is he will be in the lineup on nights when Muller thinks we may need someone to drop the gloves, but otherwise, he serves no purpose. Whether Welsh will ever be a legitimate NHL player, much less a center, is very much up in the air, so I expect that Muller is putting him out there on the 4th line because he is a big body and could use the NHL experience.

It's actually kind of shocking to me to see that Tim Brent had that many points last season. 7 of those points were on the powerplay, though, due to him being the only right-handed shot at Muller's disposal to work the half wall, which also might make him the least skilled player to see regular powerplay time in the history of the NHL. If Brent is on the third line then I think we are in trouble. If we were to run a pure checking line I assume the lineup would be something like this:

Staal-Staal-Semin
Skinner-Jokinen-Tlusty
Dwyer-Brent-LaRose
Bowman-Welsh-Westgarth

Now you have Dalpe and Boychuk out of the lineup (because they really don't have any purpose if they aren't playing in a scoring line role), and Bowman is playing on the 4th line (or switch him with Dwyer) which is probably a pretty big waste. I also think you are looking at one of the worst bottom sixes in the league, and I don't think that third line would even function very well as a checking line. That strategy worked last year (somewhat) because we had Brandon Sutter as the third line center.

With the players we have I think it makes sense to run three balanced lines rather than a specialized checking line; that was part of the mentality behind trading Sutter. Jokinen's ice time is probably not going to suffer for it; through the first two games he has averaged 17:12 of ice time. His first 4 seasons in Carolina he averaged 14:43, 16:49, 17:13 and 17:40.

And while I always got angry at Maurice for never playing our AHL guys on anything other than the 4th line, I wouldn't blame Muller for keeping them off the top two lines for the first couple weeks of the shortened season. It's evident enough that E. Staal and Semin have never played together, so it'd be nice to have some continuity by having another winger on the first line who was on the Canes last year...for the time being. If your top line was all playing on different teams last year and haven't played together for more than 2 weeks, you're gonna have a bad time.

Point taken about the balanced lines. With Ruutu out, it just makes the talent so incredibly thin.

At the same time, though, unlike some of the regular players on the team, Dalpe and Boychuk have been playing pro hockey since October. I think that is a factor in playing them a lot. Also, we just desperately need someone to emerge as a legit scoring player; a big part of our season is really going to hinge on if one of Dalpe, Boychuk or Bowman can do that.
