What the hell is it going to take for baseball to pull its head out of its own ass and do something about the umpires? There's at least a couple of seriously botched calls per week that could be corrected but they won't. Even their weak attempt at instant replay isn't working. Have a separate replay person at the MLB offices who makes that call, not the same people who are on the field. Hockey can do it with goals, why can't MLB do it with homeruns?

Who is to say they aren't throwing games? Is that out of the realm of possibility here?

In fairness it's probably just their massive egos and refusal to admit when they make a mistake. That's why it's so crucial that the guys who make the initial call are not the ones to make the final determination on the review.

Angels @ White Sox tonight for Sunday Night Baseball?

why not put the Dodgers Marlins game on if you're looking for a primetime matchup of 2 horrible teams

can anyone recommend a good section in the <$40 ticket range for Yankee Stadium?

If you're willing to stand, you can watch the whole game from right behind the $200 seats no matter what ticket you have. You lose some of the high flies, but other than that it's fine and makes walking over to get food a pretty pleasant experience

As for buying actual tickets from the Yankees, I couldn't say. They charge a fortune despite dwindling attendance, so I usually just watch Stubhub all day until a good bargain comes along

Also there are less than 100% ethical ways to get into the better sections that work for me every time, if you're willing to do some MS Paint work

^^yeah we are looking at stubhub. there are a bunch in the Wheelchair accessible rows for cheap, but aren't those the seats they move you from if you aren't disabled? we definitely aren't buying from the box office.

heard this quote a lot this hear, don't remember hearing it too much in the past, is this a new thing that everyone is getting on, or did I seriously just miss it in the past

(also, don't really care if it is true or not, just whether or not the utterance of this phrase is on the rise)

^^its been that way for a while. Back when the Braves had Glavine, Maddux and Smoltz...the saying was if you didn't get a couple runs on them in the first 2-3 innings, you wouldn't get any after that.

Glavine was a notoriously horrible 1st inning pitcher. I remember seeing stats where it showed that he gave up like 40% of his earned runs in the 1st inning. Wonder how that stat turned out for his whole career though?

I think the overall saying about getting to an ace early really stems from the fact that you might have success early in a game when an ace is still getting loose and adjusting to the umps strike zone. I wonder if stats actually bear any of this out seeing that in theory in the later innings (6th and on) the offense should hit better when the starter is tired and loses velocity.

Matt Harvey still hasn't lost a game. 1.93 ERA, .083 WHIP

Team is 7-3 when he starts.

How do you guys feel about the new interleague "rival" format?

Quote :
"Monday's full slate of Memorial Day games will signify the start of the "prime rivals" segment of Interleague Play. Yet instead of playing a pair of separate three-game series in each team's home stadium as has been done in the past, the meetings this year will come in back-to-back two-game sets this week in a home-and-home series format.

In other words, one team will play host to its rival on Monday and Tuesday before the same clubs travel to the other team's home venue to complete the series on Wednesday and Thursday. That is, except for the Rangers and D-backs, who will play a doubleheader in Arizona on Monday before using Tuesday as a travel day and finishing their four-game set in Arlington on Wednesday and Thursday."

Here in Chicago, the Cubs/Sox series has gone from thoroughly entertaining to near-apathy in about 6 years time -- of course it doesn't help that both teams are mediocre and the Cubs are declared re-builders.

As a Sox fan I'm happy just to get this "series" over with. Changing it from 3 home/3 away at different times in the year to 4 in a row is interesting, I guess.. but without the electric atmosphere of last decade -- where they HAD to schedule the games during the day to try to stamp out public disruption -- the rivalry has lost its thrills.

Inter-league "rivalries" are lame unless its New York and Chicago.

There are a few good ones:

NY
Chicago
Oakland/San Fran
LA (maybe?)
Baltimore/Washington

But it's definitely still a forced concept even in these above areas.

Oakland/SF "rivalry" is pretty one sided. A's fans HATE the Giants, while most Giants fans will root for the A's whenever they are winning. You see a lot of those stupid split caps with one side being the SF logo/colors and the other side being the A's logo colors at Giants games and around the Bay Area...

Toronto v Montreal used to be kind of fun even though neither were good back then. There needs to either be a second Canadian team or the Jays should move to Buffalo.
