I got the SB6141 this week. Tested speed before and after the switch. Went from 17Mbs to 47Mbs. But when I'm downstairs it has been ranging from 20-35.

Missing a little information here. What speed are you paying for? Do you mean wireless downstairs? You should always troubleshoot intranet problems before testing your internet speed over wireless. Doing a speedtest wirelessly if your network is the bottle neck won't tell you anything about the throughput you're getting from your ISP.

Yeah sorry. I posted really quick while at work.

I am paying for what was 15Mbs and is now 50 Mbs at TWC. And yes wireless was downstairs with my router (Linksys e2500) being upstairs. I just tested it again downstairs and got 39.5 Mbs. I didn't mean it as a gripe although I see how it sounded like one.

Just got TWC installed last night. First test I pulled 233/23 on a Maxx 200 account. So much better than my shitty 12MB U-Verse account.

I got move into my new place and tested the standard maxx (50/5) and only got about 17mb/s. I called in to TWC, and they told me that it was activated on my account, but the maxx wouldnt actually go live in my area (27606) until Aug 11th. They said on the 11th I had to reset my modem, and then I should get the 50/5 speeds.

The first lady I spoke with definitely said it was available now. But whatever, it is TWC

Switching to business class 200/20 for 125/mo no cap. This $10/50GB overage is for the birds and I haven't been able to get more than like 50MB/s on torrents anyway.

TW says Apex @ 27539 is set for Maxx upgrade on 10/2

Right now I've got a fairly shitty D-Link router just doing the DHCP & routing (using another router acting as the AP), will I need to upgrade router to handle the 300/20? I already have a SB6183 for the modem.

Call up TW, they should be able to give you a specific date. I asked when I was getting my 6183 activated.

TWC finally bumped up my speeds. I'm not getting all the upload bandwidth I'm supposed to but that may be a time-of-day thing.

TWC gave me 100 down, but ping is still 100ms everywhere so not buying it. Plus I'm sure jitter and packet loss is happening somewhere.

My post-upgrade TWC upload speeds are all over the place. And, I still haven't seen the 30 mpbs I'm supposed to. It seems to bounce around between 6 and 20 mbps.

I'll take this without a cap all day long over 1Gbps/50Meg with 550GB. $125 vs close to $200 with overages.

Is there a way to see if we are supposed to have Maxx? TWC has been kinda okay since we moved in last month, and the guy setting it up was rather clueless. My router is supposed to be up to 150Mbps, but I have yet to see anything close to that.

I just used the support chat and they told me 10/6 for my address.

But now I have a dilemma. AT&T just started offering gigapower(!!1) here this week. 1gbps is pretty enticing for the exact same price (without "Internet Preferences") as I'm paying TWC. But I don't know that I trust AT&T to not be snooping on my shit even with paying them the $30 privacy tax. I could always use a VPN but even with a good VPN, I'm likely to lose a lot of speed. And I've been reading in some places that they are barely able to break 200mbps with gigapower.

So I was thinking about just waiting to see how the 300/20 was before making a decision but then I found out my modem won't even support that and will cap out around 100mbps. So I'd have to pay ~$125 for a new modem– I bought my own several years ago– to even test out the new speeds. I guess I could always just sell the modem on ebay or something if I decided to switch...

^what's this snooping and privacy tax? I've been absolutely satisfied with 200/15 (not ATT or TWC) after using gigabit for about 2 weeks. I had to change my "Internet Preferences" drive to my SSD just to see anything close to 1gbps. 25MB/s is what I see on average now and I'm just fine with that. I think the most I saw anyway was 75MB/s or something with "gigabit". Speedtest using ISP node would cap out at like 900 directly connected to modem and more like 700 going through my router.

I needed an even more special 32 channel modem for gigabit that isn't even on the market and i was forced to rent. The SB6183 is 16 channel and will work for TWCMAXX. When I switched to business account the lease fee disappeared and i got to keep the special Hitron 32 channel modem. Means that I can avoid congestion and get a more consistent 200mpbps which i haven't had a single point where i haven't gotten those speeds so it may feel like a waste of money but it's probably not that bad of an upgrade.

"Receive our U-verse with AT&T GigaPower Premier Offer by choosing AT&T Internet Preferences. When you select AT&T Internet Preferences, we can offer you our best pricing on GigaPower because you let us use your individual Web browsing information, like the search terms you enter and the web pages you visit, to tailor ads and offers to your interests.
You won't necessarily receive more ads when you are online, but those you do see may be more suited to your interests. For example:
If you search for concert tickets, you may receive offers and ads related to restaurants near the concert venue.
After you browse hotels in Miami, you may be offered discounts for rental cars there.
If you are exploring a new home appliance at one retailer, you may be presented with similar appliance options from other retailers.
You might receive these offers or ads online, via email or through direct mail. You have our pledge that AT&T is committed to protecting your privacy. We will not sell your personal information to anyone, for any reason. Period."

That might be formatted all fucked up but whatever. Basically, they inspect all of your http request and serve you ads based on your browsing history. But I don't know if I trust them to not do it anyways even if I pay the $30 to not be part of that.

^ that explains a lot... i switched to Uverse back in March, and since then have been getting weirdly targeted ads, very noticeable compared to TWC. I would also get ads clearly based on my GF's browsing habits, which didn't make sense since they're supposed to be cookie based and we don't share a computer.

I will definitely be switching back to TWC once they bump the speeds where I live though.

What about using HTTPS Anywhere addons? That's fucked up, but I remember CenturyLink using their DNS to redirect failed websites to their ad-laden results page. There was an uproar and they added how to disable it. Hell it may still be turned on by default. I think Suddenlink did that too.

After thinking on it more, I'm thinking that you meant how much for 50/5 AFTER the upgrade, right?

So that's whatever the Standard pricing is. The $64.99 50/5 will turn into 300/20.

So I bought a new modem (SB6183) and got the upgrade on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, but somehow my downstream numbers are actually worse than before. I get 20 up all day long, but I can barely hit 40 down now. I haven't even seen a test or download as fast as before it rolled out.

The TWC rep I talked to just told me to wait and give it 24 hours but there were no other maintenance events planned. I don't know what they expected to happen over that 24 hours but nothing has changed.

smoothcrim says his house in Raleigh with gigapower only gets like 200 down, but that's still 5 times what I'm getting right now so I'm considering switching.

Well, I look like an idiot now...

That's modem direct to computer. For some reason, my router is seriously limiting my speeds. It's a Cisco E3000 running DD-WRT so I would think it would be good to go. I guess I'll have to figure it out.

$20 more than the SB6141 which can do 343mbps. I guess the SB6183 can do twice that (686mbps) due to the extra 8 downstream channels. Worth it for only $20 if you plan on getting some crazy internet plan in the future.

Good point. No idea. I get around 125-130 mbps with my SB6141 but don't know the limiting factor. Maybe it's per ISP.
