why do you need to know about your new brakes on a race track, are you planning on tracking this? 9/9/2014 9:53:54 AM |

It's widely known that the 370Z's brakes do poorly in a track environment. I think a lot of it has to do with airflow, and if the case I don't see how the Maxima would do any better in that regard. Still, the instances of brakes going soft one lap, and then completely failing another lap later, are pretty scary

From C&D:
Quote : | "Our suspicion is that Nissan got a bit greedy in its quest for today’s all-important fuel-economy numbers and boosted the Z’s aerodynamics a little too far by cutting back on the amount of air directed through the wheel wells to cool the brakes. Key takeaway: If you intend to track a Z, don’t use the base pads, upgrade the brake fluid, and be sure to install brake-cooling ducts." |

Yeah, I read that article back when it was published it, and then again before I hotlinked it here What gives you the impression that the Maxima has better airflow for the brakes than their sports car? Its possible, however it is not a logical thought process. 9/9/2014 12:43:59 PM |

Absolutely none.
I know the car has faux ducts in the bumper, that could probably be made functional without too much work.
Though reading the article, I'm not likely to ever run into problems. I was just more curious than anything, and also good to know in case I head to the mountains. 9/9/2014 12:51:52 PM |

They're considerably larger than your original rotors, so all things being considered you increased your heat sink capacity by quite a bit. 9/9/2014 2:04:19 PM |

True, but the Maxima will never develop anywhere near the kinetic energy to be dissipated by the brakes that the 370Z does, either. Not on a racetrack, anyway.
...and it will be a moot point on either car anywhere other than a racetrack.
Of course, there's no reason to put these brakes on a Maxima to begin with unless you intend to track it, and then...there's no reason to track a Maxima. So, it's completely nonsensical, but not because the fadey Z-car brakes won't be adequate for a Maxima that probably has even poorer ventilation.9/9/2014 7:18:08 PM |

Won't go as fast, but it's considerably heavier and poorly balanced with it's FWD layout, so those fronts would be severely punished.9/10/2014 9:19:23 AM |

^^ right, and more softly sprung and damped, with a higher Cg, so even more weight transfer to the front...but the Z is no lightweight, and energy increases with the square of velocity. 9/10/2014 8:01:58 PM |

Coil overs arrive next week, as well as a new y-pipe. Y-pipe is +13whp because of how stupidly bent the factory one is. 10/20/2014 9:23:45 PM |

New vs old suspension. Installed it today, but will need to make some adjustments tomorrow. I need to lower the front a bit more (possibly, need to check control arm and axle angle first), and tighten up the rear more. Currently the car is set at exactly the same height as it was with the Eibach springs.

Quick picture now that the coils settled:
Want to lower the front maybe 1/2" more, and raise the rear 1/4" or so.
Ordered new 18" wheels. 18x9.5 et38. 22.5 lbs each, same as factory wheels but 1.5" wider. Also got them for an amazing deal. They aren't exactly what I was looking for, but the specs were right and the cost was even better.

Sort of. 20" vs 18" Summer tires vs all season tires.
These (18") are wider, and will see sticky rubber when the all seasons wear out. I already have all season tires for the 20" that will go on when the summers wear out. 11/20/2014 7:18:25 PM |

You'll have to forgive any perceived sass, but your project has the following mods (below):
Maxima Stereo / 2 10w3 subs Catback Exhaust BBS LM Reps Tint Eibachs to lower Rear diffuser Aftermarket grill Tear sway bar Second set of wheels (gunmetal 5 spoke) Replacement JL Audio 13.5w6 subs Wood floor in trunk Third set of wheels, m3 reps, on venza now Rotors, centric pads, bolts, calipers, fluid Coil overs Y pipe Third set of wheels (current) Front splitter
We've got to be looking at a minimum of 5k, no? On a FWD CVT car? Given the investment of the above pieces and/or the fact you travel 45k/year in this things, why didn't you just get something else to start with that is nicer/faster/more fuel economical? I ask as a genuine question based on your interests, not to be a dick, but I truly don't get it?

Yes, I probably have spent 5k on this. Maybe a little more.... Though I do sell the parts that I'm not using anymore and recoup some of the costs.
I really like the maxima, and with my new job, I'm now only doing 25k a year. I do like a lot of other cars that are nicer, faster, better mileage, but it just didn't work out that way on this car. It wouldn't really matter what car I buy, but I will want to mod it. Wheels, stereo, badging, etc. It is a hobby. I don't do it to add value, just personal enjoyment. Also fun to improve (sometimes opinion only) on what the factory offers.
I've paid this car off, which is one thing people gave me crap for originally, not that it really matters. I was staring to family plan and wanted something bigger and more useful than the Juke.
In a couple years, 200-250k miles I'll look at something else to drive/ play with. Already thinking either M5 or E63 AMG Wagon. Something Porsche would be nice as well, but probably not in the cards. 12/15/2014 10:14:03 PM |

It has never been done before and there is demand. If I get this right then I'm going to make it and sell it. I have a manufacturer lined up already, just need to work out the price after the prototype is finished.

with the stock manifolds I'd wager that neither x nor h pipe arrangements do much for the power delivery on that thing.

Dr Pepper, they are 'calculated' and I got it nearly perfect. I used an iPhone harmonic tuning app to get the resonating frequency of the previous exhaust. I knew the pipe length would be fairly similar so I calculated based on that. That is a little different than calculating based on a known length and gas velocity, but with similar outcome. 89hz came out to a 15.8" 1/4 resonance tube with the online wave calculators I used (thanks random university online tool).
