I think the new Beck and new War on Drugs are the two best records I've heard this year.

After that, I think it's Woods, Mac DeMarco, Real Estate and Future Islands; those are the handful I keep coming back to the most.

That Damon Albarn record is sneaky good, too. He's playing at Kings in 10 days, but that price... yikes.

War on Drugs is my #1. Agree with Mac Demarco and FI too. I've listened to those three a ton.

I really like that Royksopp & Robyn too.

I haven't checked out near enough albums this year compared to this point last year but here are some of my favorites:

Alcest, Crosses, Sun Kil Moon, War on Drugs, Real Estate

I still need to up the new Owls, GridLink, Hotelier, and Agalloch

Anticipating Trioscapes, Antemasque, and others I'm sure I'm forgetting.

Finally listened to the new Parquet Courts.

Just as shrug-worthy as the last one for me. Maybe even more so.

Sorry, thegoodlife3.

I really don't understand music anymore. Literally everything that is put out there by the music industry is watered-down meaningless that appeals to the masses.

the hologram gimmick on the jack white lp works really great on the standard "ultra" edition

but not so good on the limited blue/white vinyl "vault" edition

Going to see Devil Makes Three tonight, in Köln!

Hopefully these germans don't give a shit about them and I can get some face time.

the Antemasque album is completely kick ass. I think it's pretty sweet that Omar and Cedric can go off the map writing psychedelic latin prog for a decade, break up and then come back and create a killer album of 10 songs averaging 3 minutes a piece that manages to be some blend of post-punk with led zepplin era rock while still maintaining tinges of The Mars Volt and At the Drive In. 8/10.

it is pretty good

so many conflicting feelings, though

part of me wants them to forever stay as one of 16 year old me's favorites, and another part is happy they sound the same but not in a stale way, if that makes any sense

Nothing jumped out at me on new Spoon. Not bad, but even the best song is less remarkable than the best of Transference. Meh.

New Jenny Lewis is solid. More consistent than Acid Tongue, but the highs aren't as high. The production is awesome, kudos to ol' Ryan Adams.

I've said it about other artists, but the new Spoon album sounds like a Spoon album. solid, but nothing remarkable.

new Jenny Lewis is a bit uneven, but there some absolute gems on it.

both suffer from Internet groupthink, but I enjoy the Voyager a bit more.

eh, I think it's better than transference. it also took 3 listens for me to start coming around to it. Anyone know why they left merge?

Loma Vista is a brand new company, and they also poached St. Vincent from 4AD (after she had worked her way through the Beggars Group hierarchy), so I'm willing it's purely a money deal, meaning they either offered a huge signing bonus or a significantly higher percentage on sales.

Either way, it sucks because the Loma Vista stuff is 40% more expensive than Merge/Matador.

sucks for the merges and the 4ADs of the world, but I guess you can't blame the band for taking a larger check while still maintaining indie cred. pretty sure the smashing pumpkins did something like that with their early albums on caroline, which was a subsidiary of virgin

^One listen in, I think it's solid. Nothing revolutionary but with Spoon you more or less know what you're going to get.

Late to the party on War on Drugs but holy fuck that's an incredible record.

new Empire! Empire! out tomorrow. Should be decent. But what I'm really excited for is the new Trioscapes album. Their last album blew me away and they were incredible live. Really interested to see what they do this time.

the new Spoon is pretty dope.

handful of songs that sound like Spoon, and a few fresh ones that don't. Same as Ga ga ga ga ga.

dope.

in addition to Trioscapes being absolutely phenomenal, and empire! empire! releasing today, I forgot that J. Mascus and He Is Legend each had albums dropping today too. Going to be a good day.
