Good point on having something to care about after both teams officially suck. With that being said, it would be kind of cool to be the team to hand them their first loss in about week 4, or 5 and send their season in the wrong direction.

Looks like almost the entire ACC has either overrated recruiting classes or they have underperforming players.

Is that chart current? Look at NIU. So they are they positioned there due to very good coaching?

After seeing how LSU talent performed in the NFL this year, I think you could move them halfway down the chart.

According to the chart, UNC performed about 33% or 20 ranks better than we did. There is only slightly less distance between us and UNC as there is between UNC and FSU. The chart is incredibly deceptive.

Oh, and the chart only has 11 teams in it's top 20 team performance rank. Something is wrong here.

Even if the chart was accurate, we're not that far off the line. ~50th recruiting class, ~60th in performance. Could be worse, such as call having ~25th recruiting class, ~55th performance.

Boise St and NIU are just ridiculous. There's also a team at 115/55 with an N but I don't know who that is. Maybe Navy? It's not Nevada, Northwestern, or Nebraska. Navy usually has a star with it but I don't see them anywhere else.

yeah Deadspin put out that chart towards the beginning of this past season so it's (somewhat) dated

Quote :
"We compared how teams recruited to where they ended up in computer polls at the end of each of the last five seasons. To measure on-field success, we used Kenneth Massey's ranking composite. Massey is a statistician whose work contributed to the BCS computer rankings; his composite index averages dozens of rankings including the six computers used in the BCS, the AP poll, and the USA Today coaches' poll.

Rivals rankings were used to measure recruiting. For each season, we used an average of the five previous recruiting classes. Even though upperclassmen generally contribute more than underclassmen, we avoided weighted averages because upperclassmen also transfer schools, declare for the NFL draft early, and have career-ending injuries.

To give an example of how we rated teams, 2009 teams are made up of recruiting classes from 2005-09. In 2009, USC had a 3.2 average, since the five recruiting classes that made up that team were, on average, ranked 3.2.

We then averaged results from 2009-2013 and compared the metrics. Doing this tells you that from 2009-2013, USC finished 22nd in Massey's poll on average with teams that had recruiting classes ranked 4.2 on average, meaning they "underperformed" their recruiting rankings by 17.8 spots on average. Perhaps as a consequence, Lane Kiffin got fired."

Ok I see, only 11 teams averaged a top 20 ranking over 5 years. That makes more sense, and makes me feel better about national parity.

you're looking at the wrong dimension. UCLA is straddling the line for #20 in recruiting, so there are ~17 schools that have averaged top 20 or better over that stretch

I find it really weird that UNC has averaged a top 25 recruiting class. Their football team pretty much doesn't exist on the national scale. I also don't like that they did relatively better at recruiting than us this year. They only had 3 and 4* recruits, whereas we had plenty of 2* and below.

It's UNC, the place sells itself to kids who don't know any better. I wouldn't be concerned about their recruiting classes to be honest, they've shown time after time that they can't do shit with them. I'll take our staff coaching up our 2* guys over their 3*'s in a couple of years.

^^According to Rivals, out of our 22 committments, 7 are 2*s (there are none below). One of those is a long-snapper, and the other is QB Jakobi Meyers, which from all accounts seems to be better than a 2*, and was receiving interest from Florida

(and not to be a conspircay theorist, but I wonder how many of those recruits got their third star after committing to UNC)

^^^^ no, you're not reading the chart right either. the X axis is recruiting rank, the Y axis is on-field rank. there are about 17 teams that averaged a top 20 recruiting class vs. 11 that averaged a top 20 on-field performance.

there's a table at the end of the original article that has the yearly recruiting rankings and average: http://regressing.deadspin.com/chart-which-ncaa-football-teams-outplay-their-recruit-1640831522

ah, my bad. I didn't even see that comment, just the one you posted after I quoted the recruiting stuff in the article, so I assumed you meant recruiting (probably also because I was on a one-track mind with NSD yesterday).

glad that everyone's chart-reading skills are better than my actual reading comprehension skills.

Everytime I hear something like ^ I wonder if it was really something bad but the team wanted the player to leave with dignity. Not saying that's what happened in this case, but I'm sure it happens all the time.

I don't think it's been posted in here yet, but the second article in the Reggie Gallaspy series on GoPack included his spring routine:
Quote :
"5 a.m. Alarm goes off
5:30 a.m. Leave College Inn
5:40 a.m. Arrive at Murphy Center, get dressed
5:50 a.m. Head outside to run
6-7 a.m. Team run
7-8 a.m. Breakfast and treatment
8 a.m. Team meeting
8:45 a.m. Position meetings
9:30 a.m. Head back to College Inn
10 a.m. NAP TIME!!
11:30 a.m. Wake up, walk across campus to class
12:25-1:15 p.m. Class
1:15 p.m. Head to Case for tutoring/Grab lunch
2 p.m. Tutoring
3:35-5:25 p.m. Class
5:30-6:30 p.m. Back to College Inn, homework
6:30 p.m. Grab dinner
7-8 p.m. Tutoring
8 p.m. Back to College Inn, more homework
10:30 p.m. Lights out"

(from http://www.gopack.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/021315aab.html)

I knew college football players have a pretty busy schedule, but after reading that, I'm not at all surprised if someone gets tired of that grind when they don't see themselves climbing the depth chart and/or playing pro football down the road. Not sure if that's what happened here or not.

UNC fans will flame us for it, but I like it. It flies perfectly in the face of UNC and their cheating ways and wine and cheese alumni and students.

Should have put an asterisk by UNC for more effect.

Not bad. But I have seen that in high school. It's all how you apply it. A DE has to be EXPLOSIVE. Manny Lawson for example or Willie Young. Those guys were freaks who probably didn't max out very high.

I like the team's nickname of Freak though....

We added 2 pretty big DEs in the last 2 years with Street and Roseboro. Both are more run-stopping than pass-rushers, but then you have guys like McKever that are more of your pass-rush specialists. Nice mixture to give us options in game-planning.

per this weird new blog (https://packstateofgrind.wordpress.com/) that the team is doing:
Quote :
"Several players will miss spring drills with various and assorted injuries. All of them, however, are expected to be back for fall camp:

Out for Spring Drills:
Justin Jones, DT
Monty Nelson, DT
Evan Pritt, OL
Mike Rose, DE
Eric Shute, OL
Charlie Twitty, CB

Limited for Spring Drills:
Garrett Bradbury, DT
David J. Grinnage, TE
Gavin Locklear, WR
M.J. Salahuddin, LB"

Shute sounded like a potential replacement for our graduating tackles, so that kinda sucks. Bradbury just shifted to DT recently so he also needs all the reps he can get. most of the rest of the guys who actually have a chance of playing already have a good bit of experience, so hopefully they can just get back to full playing speed by fall.

Quote :
"Senior quarterback Garrett Leatham, a former walk-on who earned a scholarship for the past two years, has decided to hang up his cleats. The Apex, N.C., native has played in six contests during his career.

Leatham, who will earn his accounting degree from NC State in May, posts a cumulative 3.4 GPA. In two weeks, he will start an internship in the accounting department at John Deere and plans to pursue a master's degree in accounting at NC State.

"We are very proud of Garrett," said head coach Dave Doeren. "It's impressive any time a kid can walk on and earn a scholarship and he did it for two years. He has a great work ethic and we appreciate everything he did for us. We are looking forward to watching him graduate and succeed in his career.""

Also, did anyone see the Joe Thuney commercial last night? Also saw a few snippets of the first practice on WRAL last night.
