that is what their top tier support spent 5 hours trying to do, either use the router, use it as a media bridge or use it as a wifi repeater. nothing worked, they eventually said it wouldn't work. i asked their top tier support what models are known to work with their hardware and they said they didn't know and i should just as a local store.

it connects, but its such a weak connection that it is unusable. when they installed i just checked that everything connected.
i don't know what a technician would do onsite, the install technician had no idea how to setup a router and said that he heard it might be possible but had never seen direction for how to do it. the issue is just that the tv is too far away from their shitty route. all of the router and modem settings they can change remotely which they tried doing for 5 hours, so i don't think there is anything relevant they could do onsite that they couldn't do remotely
i thought simply putting the router in a DMZ would work but it doesn't

just plugged the router in or did you have to change any settings? Any double NAT problems?

so mostly success, i got it working as a wireless access point by resetting everything and undoing their changes
the only problem is that now when i try to get into the router settings it says "Your computer and your wireless router are no a different subnet mask. Ensure that the IP address of both your computer and your wireless router are on the same subnet mask."
Can anyone explain what this means? Please assume I'm a moron
EDIT: I can still access the router from the asus app on my phone, so it's all setup how i want now

Changed the WAN address of the Almond+ to a LAN address within the AT&T router's subnet (something like 192.168.1.10). Then set the gateway of the Almond+ to the LAN IP of the AT&T router (something like 192.168.1.1) and subnet mask to 255.255.255.0.
Next, changed the LAN IP of the Almond+ to be 10.10.10.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. No double NAT issues. I get the full 300/300 speed I'm 'posed to be getting.5/3/2017 3:55:09 PM |

I went back to ATT last month, and got the 300Meg for $50. I have two onhubs with one acting as a mesh. Great internet so far.
The tech said I was the first person he knows that left ATT and came back. I said...well the speed is nice, but the price is cheaper than charter right now for more speed.

Who was it that can find out who's digging where?
They're digging on Whitaker Mill now and I'm curious if it's AT&T or Google. I'm guessing AT&T but they've been in my neighborhood awhile already. 5/9/2017 6:42:25 PM |

So, it looks like the fiber being installed on Whitaker Mill is by Spirit Communications[1]. Anyone heard anything about them? Are they laying fiber for someone else?

what methods are people using to track their traffic?
While troubleshooting today I noticed they said I used 35.17GB of traffic, including uploading 12.8GB in 1 day. There is no way this is accurate, I did not upload anything substantial that should account for that much upload usage. 5/10/2017 10:09:05 AM |

Isn't ATT known for having traffic meters that are full of shit? I swear that I remember reading something about them sending out loads of telemetry plus all the TV traffic and counting it all against your data cap.
If you have a router worth anything between your devices and the modem you should be able to use it to monitor your traffic. 5/10/2017 12:21:54 PM |

i don't have TV, but there is no way i used 12GB upload yesterday. I need to check sonarr/couchpotato to confirm but i'm dubious of the downloading amount too.
I guess I could try to also run the ethernet through the access point, then I would only have 5Ghz direct through the AT&T modem/router which would at least rule out the desktop computer. I'd run everything through the access point but I couldn't disable the 5ghz wifi and I didn't want to crowd anything running an unnecessary wifi network

So I noticed I was using 50gb of transfer a day. Found out, it was my roku and appletv, that once I turned off my TV they were still streaming. So I have to put them to sleep or turn off whatever app I was in.
Something to consider. I went from using 1.4TB to less than 600gb a month. 5/11/2017 9:33:44 AM |

hmm, good thought, i'll check the fire tv
i actually found the problem though; i forgot i had to setup my dropcam/nest cameras again for the new network and did not have the schedule correct and they were set to 1080, so it was using a lot more than normal 5/11/2017 10:04:46 AM |

Were you a TWC customer prior? I have not seen great pricing/options. I'm holding onto my 300mbps for $60 for as long as I can, until they force me to pay more for less. 8/15/2017 10:11:24 AM |

I was paying $80/month for 200/20 with TWC, and then Spectrum. I called and told them AT&T installed fiber in my neighborhood. They told me the best they could do was $80/month for 100/10 or $130/month for 300/20 (i.e. substantially worse rates than they were already charging me).
I laughed at them and then switched to gigapower for $80/month. 9/7/2017 10:42:57 AM |

I finally said fuck it and got ATT again.
The ordering process was as pleasant as getting a rash. The install went good though. Internet is fast as fuck and they are not charging for extra boxes anymore. I got two Ethernet boxes and two wireless. The guy ran the fiber optic converter to where my UPS is in my basement so I can keep it all up during a power outage. 9/11/2017 6:46:10 PM |

^ I have gigapower and there's no way to use your own, that i've found. There's some handshaking that goes on between the ATT gateway and the ONT (optical network terminal) interface, so if you plug your own router into the ONT, it doesn't work.
Is there a way around this?
What i've done is configured my wifi router as a bridge, only turn on the AC band on the separate router, then use the ATT gateway for the 2.4/5Ghz N network for older devices. 11/20/2017 4:52:27 PM |

$50 for 300 up and down is pretty awesome.
Only thing I hate, is AT&T sending door to door people constantly that ring the bell, and 5 seconds later leave....only to repeat this for the next 6 hours during the day. Stop interrupting my soaps. 1/22/2018 6:43:06 AM |

They'll need to run a new fiber optic line into your house so get an idea about where you want that run before they show up. If you let the tech decide he'll do it the easiest possible way. 6/8/2018 7:36:53 PM |

I have not really noticed any difference in the 400mbps on Spectrum vs 1000 ATT. I think most websites do not delivery anywhere near 1000mbps anyway. There is definitely a difference in upload speed which I might run against with my drone videos, have not tried that yet. 6/11/2018 6:09:34 PM |
