I would recommend finding a large lake located directly on the path of totality and then renting a nice house and a boat.

It was pretty awesome not having any trees nearby to block our view of the horizon in any direction.

Mazatlán, Mexico seems like the best bet, if you don't mind traveling internationally.

Otherwise, I would look at the following areas, but the temperatures will gradually grow colder as you move further northeast:

Buchanan Lake, Texas
Lake Tawakoni, Texas
Pine Ridge Park, Arkansas
Lake Ouachita, Arkansas
Greers Ferry, Arkansas
Lake Wappapello, Missouri
Cedar Lake, Illinois
Crab Orchard Lake, Illinois
Lake Erie, Ohio

The only other thing I would add for anyone considering traveling internationally to see another eclipse: the 2020 total solar eclipse appears to be passing over Villarrica Lake in Chile.

I watched from Cross Anchor, SC. My house was in totality and would have had about 1 minute, but I got greedy, seeing that I could add another minute of totality with just a 12-mile drive toward the center line. So I did it and got cock-blocked by a cloud at literally the last minute prior to totality. Blue skies all around. For maybe the last 20-25 seconds of totality, the sun/moon emerged from the thick part of the cloud and only had a thin cloud cover that you could see through. Better than nothing, and still dark, but perhaps I would have been better off just watching from home. It was partly cloudy when I left there as well, so who knows. I'd be willing to travel in 2024 if I can convince my family to go along.

I want to say, on page 1 of this thread I was bragging about being in the 99.99% section of the eclipse and 1985 told me totality or bust. I listened. So, thanks, 1985. You saved the day!
