Reading between the lines we have to know that Gott was fucking everything that moved, doing sketchy things, and lost control of his team. We have to protect our program. 2/17/2017 11:41:00 PM |

I don't think it was that, he just was a recruiting specialist but from there didn't do much.
Obviously she is going after about 3 main targets and I have to believe one of them is Gregg Marshall the way she made it sound.
She also mentioned Cronin without saying his name and being competitive financially from the last hire.
Edgy, recruiter, good X's and O's both offense and defense and a resume of excellent and consistent play.
She's def looking at someone that is currently coaching at a Univ. given her language. 2/18/2017 12:06:46 AM |

Just because she's not waiting until the Final Four to lock up a coach doesn't mean we'll announce it before the final four.
Barring a National Title a Final Four appearance probably won't change Marshall, Archie, or Wades decisions to leave. 2/18/2017 7:27:00 AM |

Doesn't matter what any talking head says. If you make the right hire any team can be good to great. And nc state isn't some stepping stone type job. A good young coach can come in and build a program. 2/18/2017 2:02:59 PM |

I don't think anyone's said it's a stepping stone job. Everyone is saying, however, it's not a top 10 job and being consistently in the same discussion as duke and UNC is a pipe dream. 2/18/2017 2:28:34 PM |

^right. it's not the comments about "this isn't an elite job" that get state fans upset with the national media. it's the lazy narratives of "it's tough to win with Duke and UNC nearby" and "2 Sweet 16s in 6 years how can you fire this guy?" shit that is totally misguided that gets under State fans' skin 2/18/2017 2:48:09 PM |

^^,^^^ you two maybe not ... but the vocal minority lunatic fringe that hounds these dudes twitter accounts etc definitely think we're an Elite program and they're the ones the media are tired of hearing from
^i know this keeps getting brought up as TWO YEARS OF BEING BAD ... but ya'll have to realize most people don't think two years of being bad is that big of a problem. Hence why the "20 years prior to gott we went to 5 ncaa tournies" stat keeps getting brought up
Coach K didn't go to the tourney ever in his 5 years at Army and didn't in his first 3 years at Duke.
I don't think Gottfried is Coach K, and I dont think he should have been retained. But I think you people are being bias'd as fuck if you can't see why the VAST majority of the nation thinks firing a dude after two bad years is suspect.] 2/18/2017 3:57:28 PM |

If he was bad his first two years (like Doeren, for example) it would be one thing. But it's the opposite and we're regressing. He went from having tournament teams, to finishing bottom-3 in the conference two consecutive years. And this year, he arguably has the most talent he's ever had to work with.
The national narrative is short-sighted as hell. It's not 4 tournaments and 2 sweet 16s spread out over 6 years. It's 4 good years and 2 very bad years.

i've said it multiple times. but it's not that black and white. i totally get what you're saying and you aren't wrong. but if you simply paint it as "2 down years and 4 good years" then you're missing the greater point. we are getting worse and worse. gottfried is not building a program here. he is mashing up a roster every offseason at the last second and hoping to catch lightning in a bottle. it's not working. and even at it's best it resulted in bubble teams. and there's no light at the end of tunnel suggesting things will get better in the coming year with Gott as HC. i know that's something the national media can miss...they don't watch every state game and they aren't at all in tune with the specifics of the season.
it's telling to me that the local media doesn't push that narrative but the national media does. and that's obviously because the local media has a much better perspective of Gott's tenure and just how badly things have unraveled.
i was not a huge Herb supporter...but i can absolutely see where the national media could justifiably make claims like "ran a successful coach out of town" and that narrative, while incomplete, isn't exactly wrong. but to watch nc state basketball the last two seasons, you cannot reasonably argue that Gott is going to right the ship or that things will be any better next season. i don't think that's bias...i think that's the difference between being informed and being uninformed. and i'm not at all a "why does the media hate us!!" type of fan either.
Quote : | "The media isn't pissed about the Gott firing, all they're saying is we can't hire someone "better" in the Tier 2 level. Sooo, unless we prove them wrong..." |
there's a very real segment of media that think the firing was unreasonable given his results.

http://www.foxsports.com/college-basketball/story/kentucky-coach-john-calipari-sounds-off-on-nc-states-firing-of-mark-gottfried-021817
Video available in link above but here is a transcript
“We’re firing coaches in midseason. Are you s——- me? We’re firing coaches in midseason,” Calipari said. “You know what I’m putting my contract? You can fire me at midseason but you’re going to have to pay me $3 million. Oh, you’ll let me stay now, won’t you. …
“Every coach in the country PUT IT IN YOUR CONTRACT. What if Mark Gottfried goes on a run at the end and gets to the NCAA Tournament, which he was in four out of five years? Two Sweet 16s, which is not done at NC State. What happens if he now if he goes and wins and gets another team [in?] He had good players but they’re young, they’re like my team. It’s hard to do this with young guys.”

I dont know why any of you still care what the national media narrative is at this point. We've been through this multiple times before. Some of them pick the easiest thing because they're lazy. Others pick the most antagonistic because it draws the most coverage. Then there's the coach stans who will always take their boys' back. Almost none of them actually examine the situation fairly. They're not worth caring about. 2/19/2017 2:03:23 PM |

The problem is that he's not a disciplinary coach. That's why you see all of those wtf losses over the "successful" seasons where we made the NCAAT. Calipari or no other coaches, especially ones outside of the ACC know what the hell is going on. 2/19/2017 2:56:42 PM |

smh another media hot take! wait, never mind...it's actually a very good piece.
http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/college/acc/article133719724.html
here's some highlights
Quote : | "This season and last, N.C. State is a combined 8-25 in the ACC. Only Boston College is worse. And these struggles aren’t in the beginning of Gottfried’s tenure -- they’re in his fifth and sixth seasons. The trend has clearly been established.
Dennis Smith, Jr., who really is probably the most talented player to come through N.C. State since David Thompson, could be a top-five pick in the NBA draft. If that happens, no top-five pick in the history of the ACC will have come from a worse team. And the roster is likely to turn over again." |
Quote : | "THE STUFF: I was [a young man, 12, infant, not even born] when N.C. State was last great!
THE REALITY: And you were even younger when Clemson won a national championship in football in 1981. More than 35 years later – including some lean, lean years in which the Tigers were far from nationally relevant – they won another national championship in January. " |
Quote : | "THE STUFF: No coach would want to go to N.C. State. The fans are TOXIC!
THE REALITY: Fans are fans. They're crazy and unrealistic and expect to win every game by 25 points, or else. But they also are responsible, ultimately, for the entire sports industrial complex – for without fans none of it would exist, not even this fine sports section.
And so wouldn't a coach want to work at a place where fans care, and where they're a little nuts? Some are never going to be satisfied regardless.
Ask Roy Williams. There are UNC fans who aren't happy with him. One of them called and left an irate voice mail on his home phone when UNC failed to sign Brandon Ingram a couple of years ago.
And every time UNC loses a meaningful game, I get the “Roy can't coach” emails. Yet, according to some, N.C. State fans are somehow worse. (Worse than those who don't appreciate a Hall of Fame coach like Williams, who's one of the best of all time?)" |
i'll say it again...the fact that the local media isn't falling into the same trap the nat'l media has is telling. the more informed folks realize how ridiculous some of the national #narratives are

If this was a 8/9th place in the ACC season, or even 10/11th ... I doubt this would be happening If we had not lost by 30 to so many teams, closer games, more discipline, I doubt this would be happening.
We did the right thing, we are not asking for top 3 in the conference every year... but we are asking for top 2/3 every year (especially when the talent is here to support it). Lose 4 seniors and a couple of early entries, and end up with a bunch of transfers and new guys ... yeah we get it - its hard work. But enough of these guys were here for practice last year that there should be some semblance of chemistry and give-a-damn 2/19/2017 4:13:14 PM |
