yeah we've struggled with foul trouble most of the year (especially yurt) - yet in a game where the refs generally let both teams play physically, we shied away from the physicality and didn't adjust.

trying to put a silver lining on it, didn't expect us to go 2-1 vs Duke and UNC this year. so that's good. but feel like this was a winnable game that we lost because of poor rebounding and poor defense.

easily my biggest gripe with officiating. yes...refs are gonna miss calls every game and sadly there's nothing we can do to really fix that...it's human error. but god dang if a little bit of consistency wouldn't go a long ways. when every game (and sometimes every half) is called differently, it's gotta be hard for defenses to adjust.

I would say that our defense isn't that terrible if we can force 19 turnovers. A terrible defense can't guard and can't force turnovers, much like Gott's teams.

We'll give up some points with our scheme. I'm not so disappointed in the defense as I am in the lack of rebounding. There were some critical missed chances that gave them a lot of second chance points.

a lot of those turnovers were unforced. our press didn't really do shit but give up easy layups. unc was throwing the ball straight out of bounds.

Simply put, our team can afford to have one shitty on ball defender playing high pressure away from the basket. We can't afford to have two. Aside from his generally terrible shooting (not the problem today), I think that's one of the big reasons why there is a strong correlation between us playing like dogshit and Al Freeman having 30+ min.

^^that is correct. unc had plenty of unforced errors.

in general, our D has been good about forcing turnovers and that, to a degree, masks other defensive shortcomings (they go 0/0 on a possession where they turn it over, so it doesn't show up in FG%, for example). but today it seemed like UNC being very careless at times

I still haven’t heard a good reason why Batts has ridden the pine while we are getting torched on the drive. When Freeman plays 30+ minutes a game, we aren’t a great team. Now correlation doesn’t equal causation, but that fact can’t be denied.

I think Batts should steal minutes from a big, not A. Freeman. If we rotate the 3 bigs one at a time, we get more floor space, and they can defend the rim without worrying about fatigue or foul trouble.

In the VT game Yurt got 2 fouls so Abu came in. Then Abu got 2 so Nard came in, and so on

It might have been more Sat, but Al, MJ, Beverly and Dorn started with Yurt.

That is true but there were periods of both games where L.Freeman and Abu were on the floor at the same time. Thats when I'm saying Batts should be on the court. Maybe its only 5 minutes but its more than nothing.

thinking more about the game. i think we could've used Abu and Dorn more on Maye. Abu did well in the late stages of the game on Maye, but he didn't start guarding that i remember until very late. i don't know that he could lock him down all game...Abu hasn't really proven to be a particularly good defender at all this year, so it's hard to trust him all game on Maye. and that's probably why KK didn't put Abu on Maye earlier. in crunch time he did pretty good though. Dorn did good guarding Maye for a stretch in the first half and i woulda liked to see him given the chance at other times against Maye when Maye was abusing Lenanrd and Yurt.

also, a lotta talk about Batts not playing - and i don't completely disagree with it. i think it is weird he has been so absent the last two games. but whose minutes are you taking away? i don't trust Batts to run the offense in this kinda game, so he shouldn't be taking Markell's minutes. Al Freeman had a good game, so i'm not sure you can justify Batts taking any of Freeman's minutes. Beverly was 3-4 on 3PTs and, especially early in the game, hit some big shots to keep it close. Sam Hunt played 9 minutes - i'd be fine with Batts playing over hunt and maybe getting a few of Braxton's minutes...but for the most part all those guys except Hunt did more than Batts would've done. the majority of our defensive issues (not all, of course) were letting Luke Maye kill us...and Batts isn't a solution for that. i'm not trying to shit on Batts because i really do like him...but i don't think he's the savior in this game. Batts also hasn't made a FG since the Miami game.
