I think you are being dogmatic. Also the "we" in your sentence is vague. There are huge variations in definition. You can absolutely find people that will use skin color as the only/primary categorization. Others will focused only on birthplace of ancestors, others will use language, religion, etc etc etc. Some of the characteristics that people may use are biological characteristics. I'm basically aligned with the Smithsonian exhibit but biology is obviously part of the social construct in many cases.

The way race is used in American history and politics has not been towards any biological principles— it’s been to push white supremacy. Obviously in certain medical contexts using certain physical traits to guess if someone is predisposed to sickle cell anemia or whatever because theyre black or Jewish is important, but that’s not what trump is intending here.

A white supremacist leader is saying they want to start setting policy based on a non-scientific concept of racial essentialism, and it seems like Youre saying “let’s see where this is going…”

If you think there’s a better way to communicate how dangerous this is, I’m all ears. But my default is the plain truth.

The perpetrators perception of what certain physical traits indicate

I have a south Asian family member who’s darker than most African Americans who’s routinely misidentified as black. Most Americans cannot identify his race (and was an Obama - Hillary - Biden - Trump voter).

Even Obama in his book talks about this— he’s half white raised by white people. He didn’t fully understand his own identity until he moved away and people started treating him as black, when his black and white biology are equal. Most white people are from a mixture of European countries who don’t think of themselves as a unified race (which is something bannon was trying to change before being kicked out of Italy).
