Quote : | "Our fans suck. The student sections at home football games NEVER fill up and are 3/4 empty in the 2nd half of every game, no matter the opponent. Paid fans are no better, because they won't give up their beloved pass outs and that halftime beer that they can't live without. We can't even sell out a non conference basketball game against a top 10 opponent. We are actually fairly good at both revenue sports now and fans are for the most part indifferent. And yet all you see online are how many State fans think they are the best fans in the nation. It's ridiculous and it drives me fucking nuts." |
So much of this post is true. Sad really. Students have no idea how good they have it right now.1/3/2019 3:11:25 PM |

Quote : | "The gator bowl is no less prestigious now than it was then (It's always been a meaningless bowl game, just like every other one not involving top 10 teams.) If anything, the ACC was a much, much weaker conference football-wise in 2002. FSU had already begun it's decline under Bobby Bowden and there was no real nationally relevant team in the conference." |
That Gator Bowl meant something. We felt like we were on the rise, had what we thought was a good coach in Amato, new facilities on the way, and Rivers was going to be a returning all-star QB. Didn't materialize of course and that ended up being the high point of Rivers' and Amato's careers at State.
As far as the ACC being a much much weaker conference football-wise in 2002, it's nice to see people openly acknowledge now what I argued from 15 to 25 years ago. 1990s ACC football is played on a loop in hell. The ACC was realistically little better than the Big East. So what did John Swofford do? Took this weak ACC and effectively pushed through a piecemeal merger over a period of years of the even weaker Big East Conference. And now I get to see State play half their conference games against schools I care nothing about.
2002 Big East Football
Miami (ACC) West Virginia Pitt (ACC) Virginia Tech (ACC) Boston College (ACC) Syracuse (ACC) Temple Rutgers
...and future Big East school Louisville joined the ACC too.
Speaking of weakness, anyone realize the ACC has only had 2 schools win the ACC title the past 8 years? Don't see that stat changing next year.
