I'm glad most of my stops hit yesterday.

Right now I'm watching PJC. It's going to continue to plummet for awhile yet, but then it'll be a good time to buy.

From rotten.com:

Quote :
"Oct 19 1987

The New York Stock Exchange suffers its worst crash in history, when the market suddenly loses $500B. The Dow Jones Industrial Average drops 22.6%, twice the amount of the 1929 crash."

Spooky considering the sell off....

bought Staples today (SPLS; Motley Fool pick) and Schlumberger (SLB; took an 11% beating today, so I jumped in).

both pretty much impulse buys, which i never really do with stocks (or anything else, really). I feel ok about SPLS...the Fool guys know more than I do and I'm sure they researched the hell out of it. I just wanted to jump in on today's slide, and I was kinda busy this afternoon and didn't have time to do even a day's worth of reading up on the companies.

hopefully this won't bite me in the ass.

[Edited on October 19, 2007 at 8:14 PM. Reason : SPLS was also down 2.5% today]

Anyone else having issues with Firefox and the Scottrade website? It occasionally kills Firefox when I hit refresh or if I click on something. Slightly annoying...

GOOG is up, CROX is down, XOM is way down.
Perhaps this is a good opportunity to buy some CROX.

Can someone tell me what happened to Gateway? Last I heard Acer was attempting to purchase GTW but now I cannot find anything on GTW.

Did the trading symbol change due to this purchase?

yeah, acer bought them. how could you not find anything on that?

http://www.businessweek.com/globalbiz/content/aug2007/gb20070827_278512.htm

FTA, "Acer had been rumored to be looking at Packard Bell, too"

wtf, packard bell? I didn't know they were still around. I had a packard bell back in like 1989.

Interesting, I thought Packard Bell became HP like 10 years ago!

Thanks for your response, though.

FYI TRID reports earnings on thursday.

I'm thinking seriously about buying more before then.

i haven't had time to evaluate anything recently, so i may just buy a little MICC on faith in Bobby & Motley-Caps.

CROX scares me. i would rather buy UA.

i am terrible at timing earnings (except for BIDU), so i'm staying out of TRID for now.

IBN is the real deal long term. i got in a few months back and recently got my dad in it too.

didn't buy MICC yet... bought ASIA on seeing unusual volume instead.

might get VMW ahead of earnings.

Riverbed may be a good buy now ... down 27% today, probably an overreaction. I think you can get a good 10-15% of that back. Its also a potential takeover target for cisco/juniper type players(especially at these lower prices).

TRID dropped pretty low just prior to earnings...

Only 2 possible scenarios:
1. bad news got leaked
2. Someone is pushing the price down to buy it back hard

fingers = crossed
asshole = puckered reamed

General question regarding taxing (My friend asked me so I thought of posting it on here).

Example:

Person bought stocks worth a $1000 and then it went up and he sold them all for $1500. So he "realized" the profit made...

He used that same $1500 to purchase more stock, but then the value went down to $400 (so there was a $1100 loss), what happens as far as taxes are concerned?

He is left with only $400 so does he still have to pay taxes for the original $1500 he sold a week prior to that loss?

Thoughts, anyone?

I'm pretty sure losses can offset gains for the calendar year. So no he wouldn't have to pay.

I think you can right off up to like $3,000 per year, so if you're down for the entire year, you can write off up to 3K of your losses, as I hope it wouldn't be more than 3 esp this year

if you're net negative, not only do you avoid taxes, but you can carry forward losses to offset gains next year.

got SOHU a couple of days ago. looks real ahead of next week's earnings.

i put more in latin american stocks then in china, and i think ive faired out pretty well.

I might buy some stuff in Whole foods and other organic grocery stores. I havent made a definate move yet, but i know i have to take some out of ISC motorsports and my aggressive growth mutual fund and select computers and make a move.

There are so many conflicting points of view...

^ remember to remember the difference between speculating and investing. buying TRID in hopes of a sharp bounceback is speculative. if you're going to try and catch a falling knife, make sure you do it with beer money and not rent money. there is so much other stuff out there that's working -- shit even MSFT looks like a real thing again -- you should spend very little mental bandwith and money on TRID.

in other news: they go out and get the biggest customer known to mankind, the US military:

I think the CFC drama as of late is quite interesting.
1 billion in losses, but they say they will return to profit by end of quarter
CEO is under SEC investigation and has sold $130 million worth of shares this year...

and the stock amazingly was up 30% friday on this news...
