We are the losers in this trade in terms of talent, but we swing it without having to lose Erik Cole. Corvo is questionable, but could very well be able to help us actually launch some attacks from the back end. Stillman and Commodore are both UFA, so they are both rentals for Ottawa. It is unlikely that Commodore would re-sign here in the offseason anyway, and Stillman could still come back here for next season as he has talked about how much he likes it here.

I don't really know how I feel about this yet, but I am just glad to see something done.

Also, we traded a 34 year old forward for a 23 year old.

Stillman waived his NTC for the deal.

CONTRACT INFO:

Joe Corvo (30 years old) - Signed for 2 more seasons at $2.75 mil per season
Patrick Eaves (23 years old) - RFA at the end of this season, so Canes have exclusive rights

Cory Stillman (34 years old) - UFA at the end of the season
Mike Commodore (28 years old) - UFA at the end of the season

Stillman is so fucking valuable I hate to see him go, but I won't shed a single tear about Captain Holds-a-Lot.

Hopefully the Stillman half of this deal is just a rental.

JOE CORVO, DEFENSEMAN

-Has terrible tattoos
-Might actually be able to contribute offensively
-40 points and a +16 with the Kings in 05-06
-27 points and +13 in 51 games with the Sens this season
-May kind of suck ass in his own end
-Went to Western Michigan
-Drafted in the 4th round in 1997 by the Kings

"Corvo was arrested in November 2002 in Boston after he grabbed a 34-year-old woman's buttocks in a restaurant. Restaurant staff told him to leave, but Corvo returned, punched the woman and then kicked her when she fell to the ground, police said. Corvo was given a three-year suspended sentence after he pleaded guilty to assault. Corvo was also suspended for three games by the Kings"

PATRICK EAVES, RIGHT WING

-Is young
-Displays some much needed GRIT
-will go to the net (!)
-Could be the next big JR project a la Williams or Cullen
-Fragile (just what we needed...)
-favorite movie is Major League
-favorite player growing up was Pat Lafontaine
-favorite show growing up was Seinfeld
-claims that he is an expert at ping-pong
-favorite actress is Halle Berry
-favorite NFL team is the New England Patriots (well at least he is from Boston so no bandwagon perhaps)
-graduated from Boston College

[Edited on February 11, 2008 at 2:55 PM. Reason : CORVO FELONY SMASH]

God I fucking hope he comes back after this season

as for the defensive swap, awesome. Love the atmosphere commie brings with his lovely locks, but sad to say, he wouldn't have had a chance to grow them out this year. Also, I have come to loathe gorilla-glue hands. Corvo...well, he can't be worse.

Patrick Eaves hasn't exactly been a force to be reckoned with yet, but as has been pointed out, he's 23. That's a plus as we look toward the future.

Sadly, I think this trade basically says that JR knows that if we make the playoffs, we'll go out first round...by picking up Eaves and the ability to resign Stillman (did I mention I fucking hope he comes back?) I think we'll look on this as a positive next season.

Can't wait til Thursday.

What I like about this move is that it clearly shows that we are sellers, yet I feel like we have a better a chance to make the playoffs than before.

I like the deal. It was pretty obvious we didnt want to pay Commodore as much as he was asking after the year. There was a chance of both players not coming back (although i think stiller wants to be here)

Good deal for both sides though because Ottawa gets more physical and valuable playoff experience. They all feel as if they got the best of this deal but time will tell if Corvo develops more and Eaves lives up to his potential.

Commodore is the man off the ice.

On the ice, he constantly leaves his partner hanging and can't figure out that holding is a penalty.

lets face it, this was a trade for the future, not now, which considering that we dealt UFAs to be, makes us the winner by default

and if we look at it that way, we'll all be a lot happier

but not too happy

my opinion:

Commodore is overrated and stillman is 34, but you dont trade a scorer like stillman for corvo and eaves. You guys could have had Liles from the avs for less. Eaves is garbage and his upside is about max the darcy tucker level. Corvo had peaked and unless you put a great defense-minded defensman beside him, he will be a complete liability. I just think for what you guys gave up, you could have better addressed your need for defensive help. That is my unbiased opinion.

You will recognize how bad this is when samsonov goes into one of his patented 20 game slumps and you will be left with staal and ray whitney as your only legit scorers.

I just dont see the point of trading stillman for that little in return.

^what is the future? Eaves? are you serious?

you guys were better off letting stillman walk and you'd receive the high supplemental draft pick. now that would be better for the future than eaves

^^Well it's certainly not Cory Stillman unless he is planning to be the next Chris Chelios. He's an UFA at the end of the year anyway so if he wants to come back he can. And Stillman really was tearing it up with 5 goals and 7 assists in his last 29 games.

And your dumping on Eaves is just completely off base and unfair.

^You don't receive ANYTHING for letting an UFA walk.

all i know about eaves is that he got horribly jacked up by colby armstrong in the playoffs last year

corvo/commodore should be about an equal trade, if not an edge to the canes

I agree.. Seemed like the Canes were making all the smaller moves to make room for a bigger one, and to me, it doesn't seem those moves were necessary to complete this deal... so I think we will see another deal

Corvo or Commodore? hmm, lets see here: Corvo has offensive ability and defensive responsibility while having both hands on the stick. He was also on the good side of +/- while in LA of all places.

Commie does none of that.

Yeah, that's a win. As far as Stillman v. Eaves, Stillman is the better player right now. But, like others have said, he's a UFA. And I'll take getting Eaves back to let OTT rent Stiller.

Def another deal. Hopefully with Erik Cole.

Stillman will be back. He'll resign with the canes, no doubt. This is a great move. Anyone who is plus 16 with the 05-06 kings has some defensive talent.

Kiss of death for Commodore?

Taking on the responsibility of serving as Carolina's player representative to the NHLPA has never been good for anyone's career.

Mike Commodore was promoted from alternate to replace Craig Adams when Adams was traded to Chicago last month, and he's aware of the legacy he faces.

"I'll try and break the trend," Commodore said. "I didn't volunteer. It wasn't forced upon me, but I was kind of moved into it.""

Mike Commodore, traded to Ottawa, Feb. 11, 2008
Craig Adams, traded to Chicago, Jan. 17, 2008
Kevyn Adams, traded to Phoenix, Jan. 8, 2007
Arturs Irbe, demoted to AHL, Feb. 12, 2003 (later traded)
Steve Halko, traded to St. Louis, Dec. 5, 2001
Dave Karpa, left as free agent, July 1, 2001
Kent Manderville, traded to Philadelphia, March 14, 2000

who else? you dont get assists if people cant score. this is a bad trade and unless this was to make room for somthing else, I wouldnt be suprised to see the canes finish 3rd in this division

This team was on pace to finish 3rd or 4th in the division anyway; Stillman and Commodore weren't doing anything to change that. If they finish 3rd or 4th, they are in better shape for the future. If Eaves and Corvo come in as miracle workers and they win the division, then the trade is pure gold. I'm not expecting that myself, though.

You come in here and talk about people's lack of knowledge yet all your posts are things like "terrible trade" or "dumb move" with no actual substance.

Lets back it up a bit. Obviously i wasnt talking about you. This is a horrible trade if a team were in the hunt for the division(which they are) and ok if the team is out of the playoffs completely.

I just dont think any team should call it a season with this many games left and still in the playoff hunt. I mean what does this tell the fans? We're trading away arguably our best sniper and a decent 2nd line defensman for an offensive 2nd line defenseman and patrick eaves who looks completely lost in the NHL. I dont get what your GM is trying to do.

I don't think he has much choice. Rutherford has to recognize that the future for this team is very very bleak with so many aging veterans and the worst prospect system in the entire NHL. At the same time, you can't outright sell here. There is too much at stake, and it is too important in this market for the team to make the playoffs. But then again, trading for rental players would be a huge mistake because let's face it, this team hasn't really looked like a contender since October. This is his attempt at doing both. You "sell" by giving up two pending UFAs, but instead of getting prospects and draft picks in return, thereby clearly putting this season in the tank, you get a young forward and a defenseman that could be the presence the team needs back there. Again, I don't think Rutherford is going to give up on the playoffs, so if the next 7 games are more of the same, I would expect another trade. But again, he isn't going to mortgage the future. I hope so, at least.

Here you are telling everyone their an idiot when you've missed the point. Wow. Rutherford had to make this trade. We're loaded upfront and have no solid D-man. So you trade something you have to many of for something you don't have enough of. Traded an O-man for a D-man. Now we're a bit stronger on the Blue line and still strong on offensive side. We've taken a step forward. Have you seen Stillman's stats lately? He's been slumping like shit lately. He's part of the reason we struggle. He'll resign, it's just a rental. Plus Commodore fucking takes to many penalties. It's good he's gone.

I don't see this as a white flag trade especially if Corvo can be a legit puck-moving defenseman. We don't need immediate impact out of Eaves although that would be nice. Let's face it, our d is awful. You don't just let fucking Johnny Oduya skate through untouched for his 3rd goal of the year. Losing Stillman hurts, but we still have some decent goal scorers that can soften the blow. This goes a way in helping the dreadful defense.

and FWIW, I've heard from sources within the organization that JR has already interviewed for the Toronto job.

1. D-men play in "pairings", wingers and centers play on "lines"

2. Stillman has done nothing (not the nothing we love, but actual nothing) in the last 20+ games. I believe he only has 15 or so points in the last 27 games. My totals are likely slightly off, but the point remains the same.

3. We've gotten younger with this trade. We had, on average, the 2nd oldest team in the league. By this, we've gotten a young forward, who while being fragile, has a lot of potential. And we've gotten a more offensive minded D-man with Gleason's penchant for physicality w/o Commie's penchant for taking dumb-fuck penalties. And, Corvo was fucking +16 with the Kings... that can't be emphasized enough.

4. Both Stiller and Commie were upcoming UFA's. Stillman was probably going to re-sign and he still might come back. Commie was probably going to want too much $$. In return, we got Corvo who has another couple years on his contract, and Eaves is RFA status this offseason.

That's what are GM is trying to do.

this trade would be a whole hell of a lot better if we didnt pick up that $2.75 mil/year contract attached to Corvo

I hate seeing Commodore go just because he really was the face of the franchise (along with Brindy and Ward in the playoffs) during our Stanley Cup season. And Stillman is gonna be tough to replace.

Part of me just feels like the team is almost mailing it in for this season
