I have gained about 7 lbs in the last 2-3 weeks and I'm worried that it's not just period/water weight.

I have no idea what it could be though - I had a few "cheat" days when my bf was in town, but other than that nothing has changed dramatically in my life (activity levels, drinking, diet). I just joined a "diet bet" thing online and hopefully that will be something concrete to motivate me. I am so upset about this, and I know I shouldn't be. I just feel like all the hard work I've put in over the last couple years to lose (& maintain) weight can just be gone in the blink of an eye.

well, I think I'm more of a stress eater than a stress starver. PLUS he keeps me unintentionally motivated by being healthy himself, getting me cute clothes, always complimenting me on how sexy he thinks I am, etc. So he's definitely more of a positive than a "ah I already have a man on lockdown, I can let myself go now" type thing.

i was just kidding

but man problems actually do seem to take the weight off me...and in a hurry

the only time i gained weight with a guy was because all we did was drink bottle after bottle of wine every night...but i had to in order to tolerate him most of the time

^^I knew you were joking, so I'm not sure why I even responded like that.

in other lady news: I got my Mirena put in yesterday. and thanks to our friend Mr. Obama, what would have been a $1000 procedure was $0! it hurt SOFUCKINGBAD. my doctor told me I turned a shade of green that she has never seen. she made me sit on the table for 10 minutes after it was over until my color returned and I could speak in complete sentences. however, she did mention that I had a "perfectly positioned cervix and uterus" and that the procedure went much easier than she normally deals with, so maybe I'm just a pansy?

either way, here's to hoping my periods disappear and my hair doesn't fall out!

^ AGH... that sounds awful. But the $0 price tag is nice!

That's why I <3 my doc. I got a free one-year supply of Nuvaring. Yay samples!

yeah for like 3 years between my PCP and my OBGYN I think I paid for a nuvaring like once. and then apparently the pharm reps started getting stingier and they were harder to come by the last time I went to get my script actually filled they said (WITH insurance) it would be like $60

f that noise

ACK! That's awful. Keep us posted on how you like Mirena. Have been intrigued. Though I hear docs typically don't like to approve them if you've never had children.

^ The no kids thing is falling out of fashion.

I still love mine, but after 3 years without them, I think my periods are back for good. I guess the hormones wore down to a level that doesn't suppress them anymore. Or my body did what it always seems to do, and decided to completely change its reaction to any given BC after 2-3 years.

I just went on the depo shot a few weeks go (for medical reasons...i was fine taking the pill)

I'm surprised it kicked in as fast as it did...I haven't had my period this month...yet

I was also on depo years ago, but my dr. took me off of it because of the stroke/blood clot risks (?? or was that the patch? she's taken me off both but one was just because of I had been on it for a couple years and there were risks with longevity)

i have been on the same pill since I was 18. no periods since i was 20.

just sayin. if you don't want the monthly bleeding vag thing going on, i'd try loestrin. though it took a few years to kick in, the periods were really light and short.

they want to stop all my lady functions for a bit to let my cysts and fibroids have a chance to shrink

I didn't want to the other option which literally mimics menopause....I can't handle the side effects (and I'm sure the folks around me are happy I made that decision too)

I only get 3 light periods a year. I just keep the ring in non-stop for 4 months (swapping for a new one every 28 days). Doc said it was fine... and she recommended it.

I switched from the nuvaring to OTC back in December (no health insurance so no $0 for me) and it's only $9. I feel embarrassed to say but it has dramatically cleared up my skin. For years I've been battling adult acne (never was a problem as a teenager) and I just thought it was something I had to live with. I feel so great.

The only times I've been able to consistently lose weight are when I'm off hormonal birth control entirely, but I always go back thinking it'll be different. I stopped taking it almost a year ago, and it's been great, but I'm already curious about Mirena.

Hormone's suck

Pretty sure I thought I was batshit insane yesterday, and then realized that it was the time I should be on my period but am not because of this stupid shot.

maybe I'm just so out of tune with my body (and all its weird quirks just seem to blend together over time), but I've never noticed any appreciable differences with all the many varieties of BC I've been on over the years (the one thing I've never done is the pill though).

the only thing I have noticed is a few normal PMS symptoms (bloating, cramping, crying easily, and occasionally being more prone to whiteheads on my chin). but never some of the stuff that you guys (and tons of other women) have talked about - but it's possible that it's happening and I'm just too dense to attribute it to hormones.

Beyaz/Yaz helped clear up my skin moreso than orthotricyclen or Nuvaring

but across different types of BC, the first day of my period is always crampy/headache/bloat city

I've considered Mirena but I'm a wimp about the initial side effects

I would always have a moment when I would finally realize that what I was experiencing was being cause by whatever birth control I was on at the time. The ring made me bat shit crazy. I finally realized it the day I was asked by a friend if I wanted to go to the movies and I burst into tears because I couldn't decide.

I've been on multiple kinds of pills/methods. Most pills, even the low estrogen ones, make my breasts so bloated and tender that they hurt 3 weeks of the month. In addition, I crave foods like no body's business. I didn't realize that one until a took a hiatus from birth control a couple years ago (for the first time in about 8 years). I have to take some sort of hormonal method due to PCOS, so really low dose things, like the Mirena, Are out of the question. I settled on taking Natazia (estradiol valerate vs ethinyl estradiol) and I'm finally happy with a BC method!

I had the Mirena and I have PCOS, but I also take metformin. I am currently off birth control and I hate it, minus the easier weight loss.

Also, I have been on the pill for over a decade now - seems to work like a champ. (knocks on wood)

This is the kind of stuff that would happen to me as well when I was on the pill. Good riddance to it.

I've been on the depo shot, the patch, and 10 different types of pills over the last 10 years. Finally got Mirena back in July and I like it a lot. It was hard adjusting to not taking a pill everyday. I'd have mini panic attacks when I would randomly realized that I haven't taken my pills in weeks. It's also hard for me to keep up when I'm suppose to get my period. They're a whole lot lighter now though and less painful.

Same thing happened to me. Right after the procedure they were telling me how often I should take drugs or something, but I was unable to comprehend because I was in so much pain. Luckily, Peter drove me to the doctor's office because I don't know if I could have made it home. I had some left over percocet from shoulder surgery that I took when I got home. Thankfully mirena will last 5 years and then I'll probably do it again.

yeah assuming all goes well, I'd definitely do it again (this time, with more percocet and maybe some valium and/or wine beforehand). unless I am ready to have kids then

I was feeling much better yesterday all day until about 3pm then another wave of terrible cramps (and the accompanying nausea) hit me, which lasted until about midnight. bleeding has stopped.

and y'all will be happy to know that I must have just been retaining water and constipated (prob from the percocets) because I was down almost 5 lbs this morning! holler

update on Mirena: a week later and I'm still having cramps daily. frequency and intensity has seemed to slow, but I'm still worried it's not in right and I'm going to have to get it replaced or refitted or something.

emailing dr. right now.
