Does anyone know what is wrong with the PS3 when the fan gets REALLY FUCKING LOUD. I'm not trolling, here for starters. I just want to make sure my PS3 is ok. Normally it's relatively ok sounding...

I was watching a bluray movie and about half way through the fans upgrade to a louder than normal sound....audible even when people are talking, but then turns into a jet engine which sounded like a travelling hair dryer was on or something. I got really concerned, after about 15 min it went back to the secondary fan sound and then when DVD was over it went to normal.

The catch is, this kicks in at random times....what gives? Is it heat control?

I've never heard this. Mine has never gotten louder or softer to my knowledge since I've had it. I have actually never really hear the thing at all.

Yeah I dunno, mine is the same way. The fluctuations in fan noise seem entirely random. How do you have it sitting? Mine has definitely gotten loud before, but never to the point of distraction during a game or movie. The oddest was the other day when it flared up as I was booting up a PS2 game. That made no sense at all to me.

I have it sitting down flat and there are two walls backing it in a corner, it has room to breath but it isnt like on a table top?

I'd normally say it's heat, but it's just a movie, and it randomly revvs up like it's having a chicken....at top speed i swear its very distracting in all but a full on action sequence or gunfight. It only does that for a certain time period before backing off. But then other times it's like it's not even running and it's quiet. I've yet to have it happen in a game at all, altough i've spent more time watching movies then games. Tends to not care if it's blueray or not.

At top blow, i get near it and you can feel the air coming out around the system with some speed.

Totally confusing..oh well. Hope I dont have a lemon b/c many people talk about how quiet the PS3 generally is, and I'm not understanding where mine is falling short.

this was one of the main reasons i bought my ps3 this summer (plus i got a good deal) but now that theres nothing in 2007 worth playing and the 40gb might be coming at a cheaper price, mine as well just sell mine until everything is out (ut3, mgs4, etc)...because lair and heavenly sword have all been busts (played them all)

the fan is definitely temperature controlled. There are supposedly 2 version of the massive fan in the PS3. One has more fins than the other (i think it's 9 vs 7 or 5 fins or something). Anyway, the one with less fins tends to kick into leafblower mode more readily than the other.

I think the less-fins model was only in production for a short time. There's a way to tell which you have w/o opening your case. Personally, I'd try to get a replacement from Sony.

Mine was a launch PS3 and must have the better fan because I've heard it get louder, but not anywhere close to distracting.

^If you are talking about those screencaps for Uncharted then I'll have to agree. They don't look very good.

I'm sure it looks better in motion but there's just something about them that is off to me... maybe a low color palette or something.

I think they look good, admittedly something is a bit bleached about the colors in those caps....but having seen the video I think it looks pretty strong.

^^^Your problem with the colors is probably because they really aren't "screenshots". They are screencaps of a video that was probably taken with a relatively low resolution digital camera. You can see the side of the TV it was being played on in one of them.

^ Despite the quality of the actual pictures not being great, you can still see the textures of the wall and the ground and I think they look fantastic. I really don't seen anything wrong with them. If you are really this anal about graphics go criticize Halo3 for running in 640p.

Good, so far the reviews on metaritic have been meh-bad so it's welcome news. I acutally liked the demo, but with all the games out it's not a purchase for me simply b/c i'm overwhelmed. I'll put it at the top of meh gamefly queue!

I think maybe my fiancee will play this too, so extra added benefit.

Wow, that's a mild shock. It had been getting pretty mediocre reviews up to this point. Granted, IGN has been harping this game for months and the reviewer really seems to love the world it creates.

I have a love/hate with IGN. I like the fact that they embrace their subjectivism when reviewing games becuase I mean shit, that's all critics are supposed to do...there is no true objective measure of a game for everyone. But at the same time, they've certainly trumped some average games at a really high mark if you are sticking strictly to scale of 10.

I think the game is really good but will henge on your idea of atmosphere and how that plays into a game. I'm a big proponent of that so I liked the demo right off of the bat...where I can see alot of players thinking the game mechanic isn't above average (the combat, etc) and not caring how pretty or immersive it looks. That's why the whole thing is subjective to begin with.

it's so stupid for them to artificially gimp the system like that. On the newer models, backwards compatibility is handled by software anyway... so there is NO reason that these new systems should not be able to play the older games.... And only 2 USB ports?? Did that really save them any money?

Seems like they only reduced the features to differentiate it from the more expensive versions, not to actually cut costs.

It's actually a little known fact that the newer PS3s still used hardware for backwards compatibility. They retained the Graphics Synthesizer while eliminating the Emotion Engine, and using Cell to emulate it. Basically, instead of having an entire PS2 on board like the original SKUs, they only had the graphics portion. These new PS3 models completely eliminate all PS2 hardware, and backwards compatibility with it.

The boxxing material Sony sent me to mail in my busted PS3, is supposed to get here OCT. 10.

Once I box it up and send it, they said it would be a 7-10 day turn around before I get my new one in the mail. That is, 7-10 days after the receive it.

the camera is horrible in that demo, but other than that the game isn't bad at all

I've read good reviews of both... but I've always kinda preferred FIFA myself. It's easier to pick up and play. Soccer games are only really any fun if you're playing against someone else, and not all of my friends are PS3 experts. It really does take a long time to get any sort of good at PES (or Winning Eleven, whichever you prefer).
Plus 5 vs 5 online sounds like some fun (you each take control of 1 player on the team).

In other news, the 40GB version has been announced pretty much all around the world. I think it comes out to about $360 for the Japanese 40GB. PS3 might really make up some ground this Christmas.

oh, and I'm importing this since Sony wants us to wait til "spring 08" to get rumble:

This game called Everday Shooter is being released on the PSN. I didn't really know much about it, but a lot of people seem to be pretty excited. It's another dual analog shooter like GeoWars and SSHD.





There are several trailers out there too. Apparently, the whole game was made by an independent game developer named Jon Mak.
