i updated the firmware through itunes and after like an hour of downloading 208 MB or whatever it is, having it back up my iphone and installing the firmware, my phone just says Slide for Emergency and itunes says "we could not complete your itunes store request"

^^how do you know this? Just curious b/c the filesizes (at least) are different b/w yesterday's release and today's official one. There's also been a lot of chatter about the unofficial one causing lag/crashes/etc.

I've downloaded the upgrade, it copied it to the phone, and I think it upgraded it. Last thing is said was that it had to restore the phone to factory settings and now it won't connect to the Itunes store. It keeps timing out. I'm sure the servers are getting hammered but now I have a brick until I can connect and finish the upgrade.

Anyone else seeing this?

You guys should read the news. Itunes servers are bust for awhile, you may be waiting awhile for your activation. Im really glad I dont need all the extras of an iphone/blackberry type phone. I would hate to deal with outages like that. I don't know anything about timelines just thought you might want to know in case it still isnt working for you... its not just you its everyone.

i just tried to update my 2g iphone to the 2.0 software... itunes is telling me i'm already running the latest version, which I know i'm not. maybe they've stopped 2g phones from updating for a couple of hours to let the servers handle all the phone users. I can't imagine the amount of bandwidth that must be screaming over their lines today. I must say it was a stupid idea to sell the phone to the entire world in one 24 hour period

went to the at&t store at crossroads

the manager dude i talked to was SUPER nice

i explained everything that had happened and he read over my account notes to see for himself what happened and basically said "hell yes i'll authorize an early upgrade after all you've been through"

so he called the corporate line because they have to get an auth from them for any upgrade exceptions when you have more than 6 months left on your contract (turns out 8/29 is my 6 month anniversary on this contract, i didn't know that - apparently normally they only let you upgrade 2-3 months before your contract is up, but the manager guy showed me my status in their system and they have all sorts of levels and rankings based on how much you pay monthly, your credit rating, your payment history... all kinds of shit... and apparently i was pretty high up he also said this is why i don't normally have to wait on hold when i call 611, they have different queues for different customer levels... pretty interesting.)

but back to my story... he called up there, totally willing to do it... only to have the supervisor guy tell him there were absolutely NO exceptions on iphones. he argued with the dude on the phone for a while but eventually i told him not to worry about it, he'd already helped me more than enough

so as to not cause any more trouble (and i don't think that would have gotten me anywhere anyway...), i just said i'd come back on the 29th. he gave me his card, wrote his cell # on it, and told me to give him a call a week before i'm planning on coming in and he'd set aside an iphone for me to make sure i get one

best customer service experience i've ever had with at&t... and, for that matter, most anywhere... even though i didn't get what i came for...

i had that happen a few times.. besides turning the phone back off/on and cleaning the sim card and taking it in/out a few times that's about all the normal person can do

i swear those things are fucking strong as shit. it took two throws against a concrete wall to crack the screen on my last one

i've probably said this on nearly every page of this thread but it's worth saying again.. even with almost a year of use and two throws against a wall the original cracks from the second throw were the only damage to the screen. it resisted scratching from keys and whatever else in my pockets very well
