Granted but unless I have really misunderstood some trades a $3 put costs you $300 (because of the 100 share batch)

What do you all think of gold?

I'm thinking it is not ready yet, that the dollar will continue to rise and it will be taken down with the other commodities, but that once that occurs if we are looking at a mid-to-long term global recession/depression, it is a good place to park some money.

Maybe see where gold is at when we get to $1.25 per euro and ~$90 oil?
$650-$700 per ounce range?

Or do people think this is going to ride all the way back down to the $500 range?

can someone explain what this means

Quote :
" Fortress Financial Group, Inc. (PINKSHEETS: FFGO) confirms that it is in advanced discussions which, if successful, may lead to a very substantial and immediate shift in the Company's strategy. This proposal was only given to the Company on August 14, 2008 and we need to some time to debate the merits of this proposal.

It is not unlikely that the Company may now distribute all of its assets to its stockholders.

The Company will update its stockholders on Monday, August 18, 2008 as to the outcome of these negotiations. "

Well I guess the market didnt crash today, but I still was barely in the negative. CLWR continued to on its upswing today and now Im debating what this one is gonna do. I got in at 9.44 not too long ago so its already profitable. Will probably have a stop in come monday to lock in profits just gotta decide where.

^^^ Company is liquidating, you get a one time payment based on your shares for whatever equity there is?

Not really sure, but that is what my guess would be

Anyone interested in wading into the financials?

If they continue tanking this week I'll probably suck it up.

^ If you have a big enough appetite for risk and are careful there may be a couple out there.

I don't know that I would touch anything like a WB or FNM or LEH though, unless you are talking really short term gambles.

My boss bought some WB at $17 not long ago and I thought it was pretty crazy.

Shit man I wouldnt even try to guess which financials to be in. If i buy into the muck it would be in a broad based ETF or mutual fund.

My feeling is that maybe a few skid out but the rest prosper from the lessened competition or well priced m&a opportunities.

I definitely still believe a bunch of them are lying on their balance sheets but so does everyone else for gods sake. At some point that shit has to be priced in over the top you would think.

my post from July 19:
Quote :
"Still great entry points on WFC (Buffet was buying more between $26 and $28 earlier this year) and BDK...although they might pull back a bit after that rally. I will absolutely be buying some UNH this week, and might add to my position in SNY.

Watching but still a bit too expensive: COH, GD""

Updates
WFC: Financials soared (inexplicably) in late July and are finally coming back down to earth. Wells Fargo is a respected leader in this sector and is a great long term buy under around $28.

UNH: I bought UnitedHealth around $24 that week and the stock has been up around 40% since. Has since slipped a bit in the last week or two and is an OUTSTANDING long term buy under $40. The entire healthcare sector has been squeezed by shrinking margins and investors have been scared off. But that is just temporary...these companies know how to make money and like it are not are here to stay.

BDK: Black & Decker has been beaten down with the US housing downturn, but has a very strong international business and does a lot more besides just sell power tools. Is still a good buy under $70, but it does a SIGNIFICANT portion of it's business in the US and we are nowhere near out of this recession, so it should stay flat for awhile. I'm hoping for a retreat back into the mid 50's before committing anything.

SNY: Buffett bought another 400K shares of this int'l pharma company in Q2...probably at around $33-$34/share. Sanofi is a free cash flow machine and is a bargain in this price range, which it continues to hover just above.

COH: I love Coach. They are a rapidly growing company with increasing market share, and they generate a very high return on capital. I will definitely be buying if it drops into the low 20's.

GD: General Dynamics is a defense contractor and has a great, expanding business. They almost dipped to my target in the upper 70's, but a very positive Q2 report sent it soaring before I could get in. I love this company but just way to expensive right now.

Will be watching my NSMG this week that I have been holding since the start of hurricane season. With Gustav forecast to be a Cat 3+ by the weekend in the gulf hoping I can finally get the run I wanted out of this to make a little money on it. Wish I had gotten in at .02 rather than .04 but when Katrina hit it ran to 2 bucks. I dont expect that but who knows a run to .20 or so still looks good in my wallet.

I havent really bought any other than this one, the last one that I had an order in for and missed buying by fractions of a penny proceeded to run like 7000% or something stupid. I got this one simply on the fact that it has made small runs every summer since it came out, although each year progressively smaller runs mainly due to no major storms since katrina. I also only bought 2400 shares at .04 so its not that I have much invested in it. Its just money I was willing to let ride on a gamble of a major hurricane pumping up the stock and trying to make a few bucks. Its max each year since Katrina has been about half as high but even if this runs to only .15 which would continue that trend thats still turning my $100 into $350 which I am ok with. Now if a Cat 4 or 5 hits mainland then who knows how high it could run to.

thats how it always works out, if you miss the boat just better to play it safe and watch. People pumping stock rely on those late people to try and get in and those are the shares the people taking profit are selling off before it tumbles. This is why I picked some up before hurricane season so that i would be in before any big runs might take place, granted I bought it at .04 so I am still technically in the red even after a 40% runup today. All these hurricane stocks are running though and so long as the potential appears there that a cat3+ will hit the gulf coast they will continue to I think. If this start meandering over Cuba or something I may have to reevaluate and take whatever profit I may have off the board.

Also be prepared if you are in these for the fact its a logn weekend and if it hits monday the market wont be open so tuesday it will either spike more in any aftermath or start dropping quick as people sell off.

So what did you guys orders on NSMG get filled at. I wish I had gotten in at .02 but ah well I bought mine way back in May to ensure I could get it filled. Starting to gap up now as people are chasing it trying not to miss the boat and a lot of the sellers have dried up waiting on this one to move. Should be an interesting day tomorrow with Hanna now out there and knowing there will be no trading on monday.

edit: 6,000 shares at $0.057. In a little late but maybe it'll go up a bit.
