^Damn I was getting my hopes up I could blow Vista Business off the kids computer and put 7 on and have all of the account management stuff that Biz doesn't offer.

^^Right, the key is good for either the 32-bit OR 64-bit to be installed at a time. Although you might be able to pull some sort of dual boot scenario, it's been said that Windows 7 checks itself against the servers a lot more often and therefore they will catch and disable you if you are running both.

^ do you remember the thread where the guy was talking about swapping out motherboards on a win7 machine and wondering if he needed to reinstall...and just about everyone said he would have to...and then he did it without reinstalling and said it reconfigured itself?

i remember that...i keep wanting to try it...wondering if you can make a fairly generic win7 image (make it on one machine and let windows install its own drivers, don't install any third-party ones) and then throw it on another machine

Even if it did work, I don't think I'd want to do it to one of my boxes, for stability concerns.

It'd be interestinv to try tho...I bet if you run sysrep to rip out the drivers and then used the resulting image as the base image it'd work fine, and I'd be comfortable with that personally.

how do you get your taskbar to show up on 2 monitors? i was going to download multimon but it doesn't mention windows 7 support. i thought this would be integrated into 7, but i can't find an option to enable it.

doesn't support it natively

ultramon works fine with win 7.. it might actually be a beta version that supports it but i've been using it for months with no issues

there's another program that i mentioned a few pages back. can't remember the name..but it does a good job too except for locking up occasionally

Use sysprep and create a slipstreamed disk, then deploy it using imagex/ghost/whatever. Should be the same process as Vista for slipstreaming. sysprepping tutorial here http://blog.brianleejackson.com/sysprep-a-windows-7-machine-–-start-to-finish-v2

----

I will say though, that with a modern PC, you aren't going to save any real time doing this for personal use. Especially not packing Office on top of it. Last Win7 install I did took ~20 minutes. Last image restore I did took ~8. In both cases it took an hour on top of that to get everything installed and updated as needed.

anyone else have trouble adding a shared printer? I'm trying to connect a W7 and Vista machine to a printer shared from an XP machine. I can't figure it out...

at my place, my W7 machine connects to my printer shared from my XP machine just fine.

keep getting a 0x0000000d error

so any computer can print to the shared printer, provided the printer is directly connected to the vista or W7 machine; no remote printing when the printer is connected to the xp machine...

Maybe this was discussed in the past 40 pages, but does anyone else have audio that skips when typing? This is absolutely some sort of driver issue as I didn't have this problem with XP on the exact same hardware.

I did it by accident. PSU went & I swapped HDD & memory over to another computer intending to do a clean install after I copied data from the HDD. I turned it on & didn't pay attention to it & much to my surprise it booted to windows 7. I'm still running it now actually, for the most part its fine but it is slower & gets hung up a lot. At some point I'll get around to fixing it.

^ there's no way to do this...but teracopy is free: http://www.codesector.com/teracopy.php

it doesn't replace copypasta, though, so i only use it for big file transfers of important data (but, i suppose, if you want to see the details, it's likely big transfers you're looking at, anyway)

Does anyone else have this problem (I had it on my old hard drive that died and this new one with a fresh install of W7): After the computer wakes Aero crashes and the theme reverts to windows basic and you can't activate the Aero theme? I read on the internet where is could be many things ranging from the BIOS to the graphics drivers, to the dmw.exe crashing, and by the way the dwm.exe does sometimes and does not sometimes show up in the task manager after this crash occurs.

Yeah I read that, I updated it to the most recent, and it has the same problem. I read that NVIDIA is aware of this issue with some of its graphics cards and well, thats about it, and there's no telling if they are going to fix it or what.

if it's an nvidia card, downgrade to an older driver. their newest driver is causing all kinds of craziness.

Just to rule out the video card, you should roll back to the out-of-box Microsoft driver.

OK, I'll look into it. Also whats funny is that on the same computer Vista never had this problem. The computer is about 1.5 years old so I have to go back and see whats the difference between them and will I be missing out on anything.

I actually rolled the driver back on my last install before my hard drive died, but I'll look into going back further, but if I read where it did not help a lot of people then there is no point of rolling back any further than I already have in the past.

Ctrl + Shift + Esc will bring up the task manager. You can kill/restart it from there.

Dumped Debian for Win 7. I am pretty pleased so far. Everything is slick and fast. Haven't run into any driver issues yet (Using Vostro 1500 laptop).

On a side note, my Dell 1395 wifi card finally works! No more recompiling kernels/firmware/hacks!

Does anyone have any experience installing Windows 7 on a nForce 4 series motherboard? If so, could you please describe your experience, particularly concerning how you handled the fact that it seems that most motherboard makers and nVidia haven't made Windows 7 drivers.

^ That's kind of difficult for an AMD processor. Besides, when I purchased the board, the socket 939 AMD processors were king of the hill and the nForce 4 was the cutting edge chipset with the most features.

^ what do you mean? so far, win7 seems stable, and SOME programs can save files (chrome and notepad are all that i, personally, have tried, but they don't crash)...it's just these other ones that freak out

i've found a number of similar issues online that mention certain windows updates and live sync, but neither the highlighted updates or live sync are installed...i've also removed some things from the registry and still nothing

i'm out of ideas

Yeah this DEFINITELY sounds hardware related. Bad drive, bad memory, or a wacky device driver version perhaps?

Would definitely run memtest, and do a full dskchk on the drive. Also, is this a plain vanilla install? (IE did you install it fresh, or upgrade, what all have you put on the system, did it start this behavior recently or has it done it since day1?)

^^ fresh, legal, windows 7 ultimate 64-bit install

i'll do a chkdsk and memtest this afternoon...he's actually about 5 hours away, but i can remote in and set it all up

i agree that it sounds like bad drivers, but everything is up to date and appears to be "working"
