^yeah I might get an iPad2. Although I'd like one in the 7" range. 10" is too big. The pixel density on the 10" is too low and it looks crappy. I hate being able to see pixels at normal viewing distance. 2/23/2011 1:23:01 PM |

I'd like a higher res screen too, although the res that people were spreading rumors about seems ridiculous and expensive for this version or even 3. Still, SXGA or SXGA+ would be nice.
But I don't actually have any strong expectations for the next-gen iPad. As long as they don't do something that somehow makes it worse than the current generation I'll probably end up getting one (been deciding between an iPad or a Honeycomb tablet, finally settled on an iPad). 2/23/2011 2:47:56 PM |

To clarify, March 2nd is just the announcement, don't expect to be able to buy one on that date. I'd still think April sometime at the soonest.
And I still think anyone expecting any improvements in the resolution will be disappointed. They almost certainly won't go to anything other than a 2x resolution, and as it's been pointed out, that sort of resolution just isn't feasible at this point in time. The improvements on the iPad2 are gonna be cameras, a new processor, double the RAM, and a form factor that is lighter and thinner. Anyone expecting anything more is probably going to be setting themselves up for a letdown. 2/23/2011 3:46:32 PM |
timswar All American 41050 Posts user info edit post |
I'd seen somewhere that there was a possibility of a non-resolution screen improvement. Just something more readable when outdoors.
And they'll probably have pre-orders well in advance of the potential April release.
My real question is how will the new processor and other components affect the battery life. Also, I wonder what iOS improvements Apple will be putting forward this year. 2/23/2011 3:52:32 PM |

So, I talked a lot of shit (including in this thread, probably) when this thing was announced last year.
And now I'm thinking of buying one when the new hotness is announced (depending on what improvements they make) 2/23/2011 5:11:47 PM |

I'm pretty sure the rumor about CF was Gruber's way of fucking with people.
It all started here. I think he just threw it out there to see how far he could get it to travel. Not surprisingly I've seen it reposted by several "legit" places today in far more serious form than it was originally intended.] 2/26/2011 2:21:33 AM |

Im really hoping iPad2 has native flash support. I know the probability is low, but that is the only thing that frustrates me about the current iPad. I seem to visit a lot of sites that are flash based. 2/28/2011 7:44:51 AM |

Big announcement! Now we get to see if the iPad2 is really just the iPad1.5.
Will Apple admit whether or not they have a fully improved model coming out later this year (no, obviously)? Will the leaked photos turn out to be true? Will the hopeful preview of iOS 5 show more big changes like 4 or just some evolutionary ones? Will the iPad show anything to make it significantly more worthwhile than the slew of Android and 7 tablets being released in the next few months?
How many Apple fanboys will have twitgasms during the announcement?

dual cameras, new processor, thinner than an iPhone 4, lighter, shipping March 11th in two colors, HDMI out, some weird glass case that automatically turns the iPad on/off when you open it

A bump in pixel count would have been nice, but that's not really Apple's style. They always seem to save the big revolutionary updates for every other generation of a device. This was the evolutionary update, next time they'll probably go all out. 3/2/2011 1:51:09 PM |

true. The 130 DPI is just so ugly. I guess coming from the iPhone 4 it looks outdated. I just can't help but notice the pixels. I'll probably be holding out yet again for the iPad3. 3/2/2011 1:55:39 PM |

true but when the iPhone 4 had a pixel bump it didn't cost more. The iPad is one of the cheapest tablets on the market. Sure Apple fanboys might buy it because it's Apple but I'm pretty positive if they bumped the resolution they wouldn't bump the price. 3/2/2011 2:02:37 PM |

Someone on SA put it like this:
Quote : | "A week ago they updated their 15-inch, $2200 laptop and gave it a 1440x900 screen. It is *extremely unlikely* they will put a 2048x1500 screen in a 10-inch, $500 device in 6 months. " |

^^ the ram issue for me is more of a future proof thing, my iPhone 3G gets slower after every software update, I want this thing to be worthwhile for at least 3 years
As far as the 512 I can't find the link I saw so maybe I'm just imagining it or it got removed.

RAM's an issue for those like me who are tired of Safari continually having to refresh it's pages every time another app gets opened. It's annoying on my phone, and it'd be really annoying on a tablet. 3/2/2011 4:17:57 PM |
