ESPN doesn't have any financial motives to break a story like this just when the Big East hits the open market for TV negotiations

I really don't understand UMD's motives for allegedly wanting to go to the Big101112. With the addition of Pitt and Cuse, their average travel distance wouldn't change too much, might even be worse. They are more of a basketball school than a football one, and they'll be moving to a better football conference and, arguably, a slightly less good basketball conference. The move just doesn't make sense, unless they are tired of the UNC/Duke love in the ACC 11/18/2012 1:22:34 PM |

I doubt they would end up having to pay the full 50mil. I would guess they file suit and end up settling for something closer to 20mil than 50. They already set themselves up for this by voting against the 50mil buyout and at the time their president or somebody was already questoning the legality of the buyout.

Quote : | "Under Armour founder and Maryland uber-booster Kevin Plank is "100 percent" behind the Terrapins moving from the ACC to the Big Ten, a regent told ESPN on Sunday.
The University System of Maryland's Board of Regents will meet at 9 a.m. Monday to vote whether to accept an invitation to join the Big Ten Conference, a source told ESPN.
Plank is "heavily involved behind the scenes with board members," a regent told ESPN on Sunday. The source added that several of the 17 board members were "miffed" that they were not included in the process until the late stages, so the vote could be close.
Plank declined comment at Saturday's game but insisted he is not involved in Maryland's athletic decisions.
If Maryland goes from the ACC to the Big Ten, Rutgers of the Big East will then follow suit, a source said. The Rutgers announcement could be as early as Tuesday, sources said. The addition of Maryland and Rutgers would give the Big Ten 14 members as the league gears toward negotiations on a new media rights deal when its first-tier rights expire in 2017.
There is not a consensus among Maryland athletic department officials, a source said. The school is leaning toward the move but there is still time for the school to decide to stay in the ACC, according to the source.
Maryland president Wallace Loh has been handling the conversation with Big Ten officials, a source said." |
Joe Ovies had a tweet yesterday asking how was Maryland going to afford the buyout. Someone sent to him a link saying Plank was planning on selling $64 million worth of Under Armour shares, and he replied "it must be nice to set money on fire".11/19/2012 9:21:24 AM |

Eh, I could not care less. Take UL even though its academics don't fit for all I care.
I was never a huge UConn football fan since I left CT before they were 1-A.
Obviously UConn would've been a much better choice over the BC train wreck but it is what it is.

Clemson and FSU are going to be watching how the ACC handles this very closely, Swofford needs to be on his game or Maryland won't be the only exit. 11/19/2012 11:02:21 AM |

ACC decision will hinge on football or academics. Louisville is obvious choice but they are 140th in US News rankings. Cincy even worse.
Aside from those two what other choice is there? UCONN? UCF? 11/19/2012 11:07:53 AM |

I am so glad they're leaving. I'm not worried about other defections UNLESS we don't hold them to that 50M buyout. If the under armor guy wants to waste his money to make MD the joke of the B1G, let him.
