I don't think people want barnes over Miller or any other 'big time' guys.
However, you don't turn Barnes down hoping to get a Miller or Wright unless you KNOW Miller will say 'Yes' when his team loses. That is not equal to "will listen" or "is interested"....the only way we hold off Barnes signature is if Sean wants this job badly. You tell 3-4 guys they can have the job and whichever one signs the paper first wins.
Barnes would be a slam dunk hire. He's not #1 or even #3 on my list, but he's a guy who you ABSOLUTELY take if he's willing to come. The old 'a bird in the hand' adage
Yow has a pulse on how serious/interested folks like Miller or the pipedream 'Donovan' types are.... and you better bet that if we ink Barnes it's becuase she didn't feel it was worth waiting around on Miller based on early talks and missing out on Barnes, too
Any school that just fired their coach in the country would be freaking lucky to land Rick Barnes..... that doesn't mean he's the #1 candidate out there

Let say we miss out on Sean Miller...and others.
Then we hire Shaka Smart. If you found out Barnes was ready to sign, wouldn't you be pissed we blew that chance? If you say no, you're high as a kite 3/22/2011 12:51:03 PM |

He's got a great gig, no doubt.
That said, if he's going to move...now's the time. NC State is near his & his wife's family. This is likely the last chance he'll get to move on. If TX matches a raise we throw at him, no other school will take a shot to hire him away. Does he want to stay at TX until retirement...I don't know that answer.
I do think due to his wife's medical issues requiring treatment at Duke, his age, his NC ties & approaching retirement, and Debbie Yow running the search...we have 3x the ability to land him this time around.
I just don't know if he's on Debbie's list or not. While not old...he is an older coach. Still, if Rick can give you 10-15 years, you take it unless Donovan or Miller are beating down our door for the job. Period.

Pretty much. Early on, there was speculation we'd reached out to him. IIRC, Yow allegedly knows Donovan fairly well and along with Jay Wright, loves thier coaching style and would love to have either one.
Donovan ain't coming here. I was just throwing out the hypothetical that you accept Barnes' signature unless for some reason Donovan told you when UF loses, he wants our job.3/22/2011 3:41:39 PM |

well, i could certainly understand why Debbie Yow would have Barnes at #1. he fits all the criteria.
I still don't buy it, and even if so, I expect to see an ESPN headline that says "Texas to extend Barnes: Up Salary to $3M"

UNC was beating clemson in the quarterfinals of the ACC tourney back in like 97 or something. Jerry Stackhouse got fouled late in the game with UNC up by like 12 points and Dean started stomping around and pointing at the Clemson player like he was some kind of 1st degree murderer.
Rick Barnes walked over to Dean Smith and started screaming at him back in his face about shutting the hell up, until the refs separated them. 3/22/2011 4:27:38 PM |

Okay, well since we didnt jump on Gillespie a month ago, there's still a handful of quality coaches who may be interested in talking to AD Yow:
Jeff Capel (Oklahoma did not give him enough time to deal with with all of the shitty sanctions the former coach before him left him with)
Tommy Amaker(Harvard's current coach, can recruit, has Coach K's X's/O's pedigree, and is known for getting the most out of medicore talent)
Scott Drew(current head coach at Baylor-if he can turn around a Big 12 program in the midst of tons of NCAA scandals, staying competitive in the Big 12 against the likes of TX,Kansas, and K-State-he atleast deserves an interview with the job he's done at Baylor)
Richard Pitino or Rob Lanier( both are currently Univ. of Florida assistants under Billy Donovan, and Coach Donovan is def. doing something right with the number of assistants that he is grooming into winners at the D-1 level, and his assistants are always making deep runs in the tourney year end and year out) 3/22/2011 4:28:53 PM |

Dean Smith yelled something at the Clemson player and Barnes didn't like it at all.
Got up nose-to-nose with him and had to be broken up by the refs. Dean's nose was much bigger, of course

I feel like an idiot for arguing against Barnes because he has done soooooo much at Texas...but I feel like he's hit his peak. He has had so many great players/teams at Texas and still doesn't have a championship to show for it, only one conference championship, and Kansas has beat him like a drum.
I'd rather have Miller or Grant than Barnes (they probably aren't even options)....and possibly Smart (although I'd be much more worried about Smart's lack of experience).

I'm not the one openly advocating trading sanctions for one lame Final Four or something.
Ask UMass what they think of that.
I don't want Barnes because I don't want to throw PP a bone (silly, I know, but I've never been a fan of his). If I had to choose a top candidate, it would be Miller. Then Buzz Williams. Then Smart. They're comparing Miller and Barnes to a Porsche and a Ferrari. More like a Volkswagen and a Volvo or something. Definitely not the top, but still good quality and potentially much better than the alternatives.
Oh, and none of you better start talking about making out with Barnes or saying things like "This pick could be the greatest event in college sports history that will ensure a Final Four and overflow crowds for games against Deleware State!", because...BOAST BOAST BOAST.

Like you said, you cannot turn Barnes down. Dude has finished in the top 10 like 6 times at Texas... top 25 just about every year. He's had his NCAA struggles, but still.
I honestly hope a move to a BASKETBALL school in a BASKETBALL conference....and just a move in general recharges his batteries. I don't think he's a great gameday coach, but he's one of the elite program builders in the country results-wise.
