Since people missed what I was saying I'll clarify:

I have no problem with extra play in's nor do I think the 1 seed should have to play a good team.

What I am saying is that all the play ins should be for 16 seeds and they play in teams should be the 8 worst teams regardless of whether you were an automatic or not. That way the 1 seed is still gonna be playing one of the 8 worst teams in the tournament.

Kenpom drives me crazy cause his metrics give too much credit to slowdown teams. If you filter by tempo, the slower teams are ranked much better in his rankings.

Can someone explain the methodology re: the play in games selections. The first few years, it was all 16s, then they moved to 12s and 16s. Now it seems like its two 16 games, 1 12 game, and 1 11 game. How do they decide, are they consistent, or do they just apply them where there are "extra teams" where the committee believes there are deserving inclusions?

The first years there was just one "playin" game, it was a 16vs16. Then when a new conference formed, the options we're keep old format or add a playin game. They added three playin games, to include the new conference and to add 4 additional at large teams (the old last 4 in)

the seeds for the non-16 play-in games don't matter, it's just the seed they have left for the last at-large teams to make the field, that changes from one year to the next based on how strong the selection team determine the last at-large compared to the automatic bid teams that year
