Roy Williams is a much better politician than he is a basketball coach

really wish he would have chosen the former as his profession

At what point does the relevant body think of pulling the African-American Studies program's accreditation? Probably won't happen, but driving home tonight listening to Fox Sports Radio, they said something like 47% of the people in these programs were basketball and football players when they make up 0.6% of the university undergrad enrollment. It's almost like athletic eligibility was the only reason the program existed.

I mean, if this isn't lack of institutional control, what is?

as I was walking out the door this morning, my wife was watching the cbs morning news, and this was one of their lead stories. The picture they painted in the 10 second overview that I saw was pretty damning. With the national media (finally) involved, this could escalate pretty quickly

Nah, this is the opposite. The institution was perfectly in control of the agenda.

Father in Law sent me an email this morning with a WSJ article about the scandal...email titled "I thought you would find this interesting..."

I still think there are some journalists out there (I'm looking at you Dan Kane) that have been sitting on evidence that the coaches know about this. I mean, shit, Smith and Willingham's book hasn't even come out yet. The Wainstein report was pretty damn thorough, and you have to think they have a little more juice in the book for it to be worth anything.

I also think there's a good chance of Roy snapping in the next few months. He looked like he was going to burst last year with all the questions about PJ and players that couldn't read. He'll get even more questions this year about whether or not he knew about the fake classes. Dude is getting old...he can't take this shit for much longer.

not sure if it's been covered, but the Men's Basketball team was the biggest offender when you look at the numbers proportionally.

From 1999-2011 there were 963 enrollments by the football team vs. 226 for basketball. but when you figure in team sizes based on scholarships, that's 0.87 enrollments per football scholarship during that time (13x85=1105), where as basketball had 1.34 enrollments per scholarship (13x13=169)

meaning, at a per-scholarship level, men's basketball took 53% more fake classes than football did.

I'd love to see Roy just resign in the next few days and then a total shit storm surfaces.

"This is such a slam dunk case of lack of institutional control that I believe it does not even need the underlying academic fraud violation. Such a case is essentially unprecedented save the Penn State case and that was exceptional in many other ways. But it is warranted here. The NCAA cannot allow an athletic department to have the type of sway over the academic functions of the university that UNC’s did. "

^^^My favorite part of Pat Forde's Yahoo column:

Quote :
"For years, its championship basketball teams were populated by players who benefitted from academic fraud – the 2005 national title team alone had 10 AFAM majors. If those titles were won with players who wouldn't have been eligible without sham grades, take down the banners yourself. Take the hardware out of the trophy cases. Wear your shame."

btdubs the second the NCAA comes in and says they aren't going to do anything more we should start cheating that instant.

and I'm not even joking. If anybody calls us out then we should just be all "Damn straight we are, what are you going to do about it?"

^So is he saying that this issue wasn't really related to athletics...or only athletics-related indirectly? Because I mean...that's pretty ignorant. Especially when emails like this exist.

Apparently, the spin they're putting on that is: "Hey, that was to help her graduate, not to maintain eligibility"

i'm not sure what is better, that email or the fact that academic advisors gave a power point presentation to the football coaches about the fact that the fake classes no longer existed.

shit...I remembered when I was in last semester of undergrad I was so burned out...I went to take my NE419 final exam and wrote on the last page..."I need to pass this class to graduate". I didn't know what I got from that exam...now I work as a defense contractor.

This reads more like a homer's wish list than actual journalism.

Quote :
"NCAA will keep digging, but relative closure near for Heels"

Quote :
"It’s still too early to say with absolute certainty that the UNC athletics scandal has reached road’s end"

Quote :
"Regardless of its root or design, there’s no doubt that Carolina was practicing flagrant football factory academic cheating for years while dabbling in it in other sports."

Quote :
"As for basketball, the academic environment is different. It’s more legitimate. It will tougher than ever to win another national title, although hardly impossible.

But unless the NCAA can find a smoking gun somewhere, there’s probably no one left to directly target."

wait, what?

hasn't it already been proven that basketball benefited the most from the fake classes?

(that doesn't mean that football benefitted more. it means they were using tactics usually reserved for football factories)

Especially if I'm the "Director" of a "Center for Ethics".
https://parrcenter.unc.edu/people/staff-1

Curious to me that she isn't listed on the staff page, home page, or about page on their site now, except for a "news" blip saying "Jan Boxill named Warren Fraleigh Distinguished Scholar" and even that doesn't refer to her as Director. (Apparently all this was a recent change to their site, haha).
