i ♥ my lumix fz-30 (new one is fz-50 at 10mp)...that said, i'll try to find the thread (i think it was in tech talk) where it was (quite nicely) explained to me the difference in sensors of a prosumer camera and a d-slr...for the money, i love being able to do (somewhat, i'm not claiming they're the same) what a d-slr can do without the insane cost ($600 vs $1500 equivalent, though of course with the $1500 you're getting a high-end piece of equipment)
and as always, check out http://www.dpreview.com/ 5/4/2007 10:15:19 AM |

if you ARE looking for d-slr, i (personally) prefer the nikon over canon - it feels more comfortable (to me), and the menus/controls are WAY more intuitive than the canon IMO...got to play with a D80 this past week and like it way better than the gf's XTi
as it's been mentioned, though, play with them before you buy - if you're buying d-slr, you're not going to see a quality difference; rather, it'll be completely preferential
also, the fact that canon STILL uses compact flash annoys the hell out of me...i can get 4gb 150x SDHC cards for my panasonic for the same price or less than 2gb 80x CF cards...and since i like to shoot in RAW, that's a big deal for me (though the panny raw files are ~15mb, while the nikon and canons seem to be about a third of the size)...*shrug*

CF cards >>> SD cards
They are more durable and faster. Also, why do you shoot raw? It is rarely necessary to shoot raw, even if you do a lot of post-processing.
I will agree that the low-end Nikons DO feel better than the low-end Canon SLR's, but Nikon's menu system is terrible. The icons are too big and it is more difficult and takes longer to navigate than Canon's menus. Get a 20D or something similiar with the wheel on the back and the advantages are very obvious.
Plus, the low-end Nikon's are built completely of plastic. The xti has a plastic case but the chassis inside is made of metal so it is sturdier.
I went on another one of these rants and I apologize for it. 5/4/2007 12:12:42 PM |

^^^ this is me in my ignorance, because i'm going based on limited experience...i didn't know anything about the canon/nikon chassis thing, but it wasn't exactly like the nikon felt cheap...in fact, it FELT (to me) more, i don't know, stable? than the canon (again, personal preference)
as for CF vs. SD, we'll just have to disagree, i guess...i mean, because CF is almost 4 times as big and twice as thick, i would assume it IS more durable, but the speed thing is not something i'd agree with (isn't 150x the same with both?)...personally, i'd rather spend half the money for twice the capacity and 1/8th the physical size as it's not like i'm dropping or tossing my cards around
as for shooting in RAW, i do it because i (personally) notice post-processing differences in a RAW file that's corrected and a JPEG file that's corrected...also, when i blow my pictures up, ones made from the RAW files do not noticeably pixelate, rather, they get noisy like "real" photographs (at least on my camera...this may not be an issue with d-slr's)...when i blow up JPEGs, they seem to be much more pixelated
again, i guess when you're dealing with higher-end cameras (or d-slrs in general) it all comes down to preference as there's no real advantage to any that i've experienced or read about 5/4/2007 12:30:56 PM |

i tried to be impartial. but since ronny brought out his personal rant
i personally like the way nikon does their menus. wasn't too keen on canon's. i felt like i was scrolling forever across tiny text on an already tiny screen to find something specific that i wanted. with the nikon, i just learn the sections things would be in. kind of like menus in windows... and if i don't know or don't remember, it really doesn't take too long to find anyway. i also a bit more of a fan of the nikon lens set overall. since you have access to just about ever lens that nikon has to offer(except for the VERY VERY early non-ai manual lenses) it gives you alot of options. the only exception to this is the new D40/d40x which i'm a bit pissed at nikon about because it only is fully functional with the newer electrionic based focusing lenses. although all of the other lenses will fit in manual focus mode. and they also made it tiny and weak looking (kinda like the canon xt/xti).
as for the difference between the CF and SD. both have their pluses. worked in a camera store for a year. may have had one person come in about their SD card receiver not working. but it was very often that i see somebody come in "why isn't my camera working" and it would be because the CF card somehow bent a little pin... .just one pin. and basically made the camera useless until it was sent off to be repaired. and i remember that one SD card problem was something like "i put my card in. and it wouldn't go in... so i pushed as hard as i could until it clicked." come to find out they put it in backwards. and the click was a piece breaking.
heh, reminds me of the lady that came in with her camera "why won't my camera work?" "ma'am how did you get your battery in here backwards..." "its backwards, i thought it was just tough. i used a hammer to fit it" 5/5/2007 11:05:46 AM |

quick question: do the D80 and XTi have a fold down, movable screen? i didn't bother to look at either last week and now i'm curious...i had a friend say he was jealous of the lumix's (again, not d-slr, but a feature's a feature) ability to move the screen all over the place - doesn't matter what angle you'd like to hold the camera at (or above you), you can see what you're shooting
also, i have to give CF this: 16GB 20mbps read/write for $112AR and shipping http://www.adorama.com/IDSCF16GE3.html
but yeah...the bent-pin thing is something i've had a number of friends complain about

d80 and xti don't have mobile screens. they dont' have live preview so it wouldn't matter. since you have to look through the viewfinder to take the picture. 5/5/2007 11:15:07 AM |

i completely didn't notice when i was goofing off with the D80 last week, since i was using the viewfinder the whole time...i realize this shows my ignorance, but why don't they have live preview? is that an inability of any D-SLR due to the SLR? 5/5/2007 11:18:48 AM |

"The mirror in an SLR camera directs the real image to the viewfinder. When you hit the shutter button, the mirror flips up so the real image is projected onto the film."

well until recently. the mirror and shutter is in the way of the sensor. so it couldn't be exposed. so the only way to see through an slr is through the view finder. now it seems that there is i think a lumix and a panasonic that offer a mode that will let you keep the mirror and shutter open and view through the screen. i personally don't like the idea, but it'd be nice for some people.
it you look, the light goes in... hits the mirror... bounces up to a prism and then into eye. so you basically see what the scene is and not what the computer thinks it is. when the shutter is hit, the mirror lifts, and the shutter moves away from the sensor. exposing the sensor for the amount of time you set your shutter speed at.
btw, i have yet to see anything about the xt/xti having metal chassis. no matter where i look they don't mention it. and that is one of "those features" that when it has it... they put it up there in like the top 4 things they mention. especially since it is about the same weight as the d40. its only one oz heavier. and per inch, the d40 i think is more dense. i would think a metal chassis would add some weight.
