it's definitely a trial by fire, he's got a lot to learn considering most college coaches are at least assistants for a good while before they become head coaches
nba coach != college coach by any stretch
hopefully he can learn quickly from his mistakes in this abortion of a season because a few more years of this and i think both his and fowler's seats are going to be getting pretty hot 3/8/2008 2:18:27 PM |

So when Costner, Hickson and Grant officially are off the team in a few weeks and with Fells looking more and more fed up with the program every day, what are the prospects for next year? 8 wins? You think we can give UNC a run for their 8-20 money? 3/8/2008 3:03:38 PM |

Quote : | "Wolfpack program at a crossroads Lackluster ACC effort just the start of N.C. State's problems
CHARLOTTE - Friday's excruciatingly hard to watch 63-50 ACC first-round tournament loss to Miami may have only been the end to N.C. State coach Sidney Lowe's second season at the helm, but it also squarely puts the popular former Wolfpack player's program at a crossroads. As if a nine-game season-ending, school-record-tying losing streak isn't bad enough, N.C. State's only effective player in their finale, freshman J.J. Hickson, may not return next season. Hickson confirmed as much afterward, saying he hadn't made a decision on his potential pursuit of the NBA after just one season in Raleigh. Lowe said he would consult his star and his family to come up with a decision that best suits Hickson. But, typically, when a college player talks as openly about leaving school for the pros as Hickson did this early in the game, their mind has already been made up. Besides, as many in the pressroom at Bobcats Arena wondered openly, why would Hickson want to return to this? The Wolfpack team that ended a 2007-08 season that started with such optimism ended the year with little to no ability to run an offensive play, hit a shot or play with enough intensity to overcome a host of overwhelming weaknesses. Lowe piled on in a season's assessment by saying a lack of leadership was a factor in the Wolfpack coming up far short of its lofty goals and expectations. That was interpreted as a shot at senior Gavin Grant, who boastfully predicted the Wolfpack would lose no more than four games in the preseason only to watch the final 12 ½ minutes of his collegiate finale from the bench on Friday. When asked what he thought of Lowe's assertion that he only played 13 minutes in Friday's loss because he "wasn't playing well," Grant refused to be critical of the coach he inherited in the middle of his Wolfpack career. "That's what a coach is supposed to do," Grant said of Lowe's decision. Grant added that he thought the cast he was leaving behind was good enough to improve on this year's 15-16 disappointment (4-13 against ACC competition). "I think they've got a lot of good talent coming back," Grant said. "I think if they do the right things and listen to the coach, they can be one of the best teams in the league." After watching Friday's frightful performance and imagining the Wolfpack without Hickson next year, few would agree with Grant. But Lowe would. "We just need to get better," Lowe said. "We all need to get better. I think this summer is going to be important for all of our players."" |

i think that is too much, going from last place to ncaa's is a big move. i'm sticking with what i said last page:
Quote : | "if we finish in the bottom 3 next year and he isnt fired i'll....
well, i have no power so i dont know what i'll do but i'll be pissed
anything b/w from 6 to 9 and i would be ok either way. top 5 and he def gets another year" |
Quote : | "this guy's already won one NC for us as a player

i cant stand this type of thinking. we already gave him a big break by giving a guy with a pretty terrible resume the helm of an acc team that had made 5 straigh tourney's. nobody is "turning on him." we will always love him for what he did for the university as a player, but you cant judge a coach with rose colored glasses. we don't owe him any more or less chances b/c of his past as a player. you need to look at him objectively.
Quote : | "maybe we can get turned down by 30 coaches after next season too " |
or maybe we can get a new AD who knows how to run a major college program. ti seems clear that yo don't automatically go after the cream of the crop and chase coaches who already have consisten top 20 programs. we need to go after mid-majors who are looking to make the jump to big times, people with hunger
BUT hopefully all of that is moot and sid will turn it around next year.3/13/2008 10:20:17 PM |
packboozie All American 17452 Posts user info edit post |
We never looked at ANY lower college level coaches like Marshall, McKillop, Altman, or any of them. That was the problem. In our search our dumbass AD shot for the big names and once they said no he gave the job to the damn guy consulting him for it.
Lowe: What about me? Ill give it a shot.
Fowler: Okay, when can you start?
