"Smashing Pumpkins' Anniversary Tour is a Shitshow"

witnessed the shitshow tonight. i thought it was pretty awesome... it helped that i was about 10 feet from billy though. pretty solid setlist, but they did a couple new ones and the gossamer jam (which has been slimmed to ~15 minutes). i think what probably would bother people (or a pitchfork reviewer) was the ending... it was like 10 minutes of weird percussion jamming with all kinds of maracas and whistles and stuff. anyways, good time.

your least-favorite online music mag has begun its 2008 reader poll

you could win either a Smiths or New Order compilation set for voting

i as really hoping that pitchfork would really wow me with their "Chinese Democracy" review

but it came off more tired and predictable than what they were accusing axl of being

i don't think i read it - i think they were one of the last sites to review it

i was bowled over by chuck klosterman's self-important review over at the AV Club

edit: oh duh, they just published it today.

I actually like Chinese Democracy. I think if Axl had billed this as a "solo" record, it would be getting much better reviews. Is it an "important" record? Probably not. Is it a good record, especially in a relatively "down" year like '08? In my opinion, yes.

It seems that some people feel like praising that record in the slightest would be some sort of disservice to Slash. Now, I'm not saying that everyone who doesn't like it is hating on it for that reason, but some of the reviews I've read dwell on their impetuous relationship far too much.

I just recently came across it, but I am digging the shit out of Supercontinents "Vaalbara."

In fact, I've been listening to a lot of stoner/doom/sludge/whatever metal. Any other fans on here?

Sur Lune's "Nausicaa EP" is fantastic.
El Paramo's self-titled is rad as shit.
Come Sleep's "The Burden of Ballast" is also good.

big fan of Mastodon, which is about the only stoner-ish metal band I can think of. I still play Kyuss like it's middle school, so I'll have to check those out.

This band bores me. They are like My Morning Jacket, but boring and just not as good.

In fact, #3 and #5 are the only albums on that list worth a damn.

I like both... and I've loved My Morning Jacket for almost a decade now, but Fleet Foxes are much better, imho. (at least in terms of potential... I think MMJ are great, but Fleet Foxes are special).

I honestly don't get the constant comparing between the two. Now, if you want to talk about Band of Horses ripping off MMJ, I can see that, but not so much with Fleet Foxes.

I thought Fleet Foxes live performance was the best show I've seen this year, and that includes being 2nd row for Radiohead. I also thought their self title LP and Sun Giant EP were the best records I had heard in almost a decade, but, to each their own.

They were far and away #1 on my personal list for 2008.

doesn't change the fact that this was the worst year for indie music in a long time and that everyone's slobbing off the same two or three thoroughly average records

I haven't listened to all of the music released in 2008, but the Islands album Arm's Way is my favorite so far. I would say that Ladytron's Velocifero is my least favorite album that I have heard.

I think my idol may have finally lost his marbles

Quote :
"Energy we can do something with. Apathy we can’t work with. Who’s above us? Who’s lighting the culture on fire? Nobody. We don’t have to live in that world. We have the biggest manager [Irving Azoff] in the world. He tells us we can get there, we will get there. We will crack the egg like we did in ‘92, without doing something embarrassing like working with Timbaland. We will find how to do our thing and make it work. I can write songs. We’re big boys. We’ll do it. Last time I talked with you, I said we’re going to come back and make a better album. The album we made surprised us. We kept going back to this primitive thing. We wanted to do “Siamese Dream II.” Elaborate, orchestrated, but it wasn’t coming from me. "

Quote :
"You take a milquetoast middle-of-the-road fake-tattoo band, we can out-write them. If you come up with the songs, the fans will show up. We found with “Zeitgeist” that the alternative audience isn’t alternative anymore. They’re a pop audience that listens to Nickelback. So doing a 10-minute song, nobody will listen to it. We have to come up with singles like “1979,” and come up with songs that sound good on the radio. We have to write those kinds of songs. "

Quote :
" People don’t even listen to it all. They put it on their iPod, they drag over the two singles, and skip over the rest. The listening patterns have changed, so why are we killing ourselves to do albums, to create balance, and do the arty track to set up the single? It’s done."

Quote :
" Let me be blunt. When Bruce Springsteen puts out a new album I pay attention. Same with Neil Young. Because they’re major artists who have something to say. I consider us in that category. When we do something it should be taken seriously, even when we’re off."

words . . .

Then where is my Siamese Dream II Billy? Seriously man you need to shut up and let the music do the talking. I would love him if Zeitgest had actually been a great album and he came out dissing Nickelback or band's who collaborate with Timbaland and think its cool but he's gone off the rocker. Timbaland is more musically relevant than you are right now. And people don't listen to albums anymore? We all know people who really care about music still do.

That Arcade Fire DVD weirded me the fuck out, because there is a very brief shot of the band singing along to Intervention in front of a run down castle that I recognized instantly as the old castle at Heritage USA near Charlotte. I would really love to know how the hell the band ended up there.

For one thing they have never played in Charlotte. But that wasn't really what I meant. This isn't some landmark or tourist attraction or something you would stumble upon. That they would be there suggests to me a back story that I would be very interested in hearing.

There are some great pictures here from a friend of mine: http://tommyandjames.net/heritageusa.html

I just found it interesting because the fact that they sought it out means someone in the band must have been really intently into reading about all of that stuff, which would make sense with Neon Bible.
