I don't think Owen Spencer has any problem with his hands. I think he often doesn't maintain focus and look the ball in. That is correctable, and he will put up monster stats if he can address it in the offseason.

This week's question: Which team left out of our early preseason top 25 do you think has the best chance to finish the season in the top 25?

Tom Dienhart's answer:
I think N.C. State has a chance to be a top-25 team and is a sleeper to win the ACC. The 2009 season will be the third for Wolfpack coach Tom O'Brien, who is one of the nation's best. Count on this being his best squad yet in Raleigh. He finally is getting players to buy into his brand of smart, disciplined, hard-nosed football. The biggest key to big-time success will be quarterback Russell Wilson. The knee injury he suffered in the Papajohns.com Bowl didn't require surgery, so he'll be good to go. He's a special talent and the quintessential difference-maker who can help the Pack overcome shortcomings. The key: Wilson must stay healthy.

While I know that injuries are the key to our season, I don't think I'll be as worried and ready to throw in the towel if Wilson gets injured during a game. I am pretty confident in Glennon being able to come in, play well, and not hand the game over to the other team on a silver platter filled with interceptions in the red zone and pick 6s.

gunzz you can't post that kind of positive propaganda. I'm at a happy place in my life where I am neither excited or dreading the upcoming season. you post that stuff, next Gavin Grant is going to tell us all Wilson is a lock for the Heisman, I'll get excited and then comes the slap to the face.

While I'm optimistic about Glennon developing into a solid QB I don't he'd be effective coming in for Wilson if he got injured next season. Dana Bible has modified our offense to work with Wilson and I don't think you could substitute in Glennon and get the same results. I do think think that Bible would later be able to modify the offense to suit Glennon when it becomes his time, however.

^why do you think that?

Wilson ran a lot more pro style stuff towards the end of the season...especially getting under center and rolling out. Plus, Glennon has been said to be more athletic than we think, so why wouldn't he be able to run the same offense?

And what makes you think that they don't have the guys learning both playbooks? I highly doubt the plays are THAT different. I'd assume we run a pro-set with some spread principles instead of the other way around. I just don't think its that big of a switch for the QB. I'd be more worried about the O-line remembering who their blocking for. With wilson they can let the pocket break down if they are creating space. Won't be able to do that with glennon.

Plus, that read-option really went away later in the seaon. If Wilson pulled down, he generally pulled down with the intention of throwing, and his big runs came on plays where it looked like he scrambled rather than running on purpose.

Wilson has played in the Bible pro-style offense that he has run for years. As far as the rollouts are concerned, Glennon scored a TD on a rollout in the Under Armor All-American game last year and that was without a collegiate training regimen.

The great thing about going into next season is that we know we have at least one solid QB with Glennon looking good too, but we'll have to see how he performs in game situations.

Well, technically we don't have depth at the QB position because no one has seen Glennon perform, but QB depth is hard to gauge on any team. I do like our potential for depth on both sides of the ball.

Either way, you have to be pessimistic. If you aren't, you haven't been a State fan long enough.

2010 prospect Creecy getting plenty of attention

Class of 2010 ESPNU150 watch list receiver Tony Creecy (Durham, N.C./Southern Durham) is claiming multiple scholarship offers, plenty of interest and an early favorite.

The 5-foot-11, 193-pounder caught 48 passes for 853 yards and eight touchdowns as a junior and currently claims offers from North Carolina, Duke, North Carolina State, Stanford, Wake Forest, Ole Miss, Virginia and Florida State.

Creecy and his family were Tar Heels fans growing up, but another in-state school currently has the early lead for his services.

"Ever since I started being recruited, North Carolina State has been recruiting me hard," he said. "They are now the top choice."

Creecy will make the short drive over to Raleigh this weekend for the Wolfpack's Junior Day event. Last weekend, he attended Duke's Junior Day.

"I want to go to a school that has plenty of returning players," he said. "I want a program that has a good quarterback, good receivers and a good coaching staff. Also, I want to go somewhere I can get a good education in case I don't go to the NFL I need something to fall back on."

In addition to the programs that he claims offers from, Creecy likes Florida, Oklahoma and Oregon.

Creecy also runs the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay in track and plays basketball.

Quote :
"5) DT Raynard Randolph (6-3/300, 5.2, Brandywine Gwynn Park)
Randolph is a true space-eater who earned a dozen offers from a mixture of ACC, Big East, Big Ten and SEC programs. He wanted to stay relatively close to home in order to be near his ailing father and chose N.C. State in mid January over Penn State, Michigan State, Illinois and Louisville.

“Keith Willis was my recruiter and he stuck by me from day one. It was obvious N.C. State really wanted me and that meant a lot,” he said. Randolph solidified status as a top prospect with a superb senior season, recording 70 total tackles, 18 tackles for loss and 10 sacks as a nose guard.

He is a pure run stuffer who can take on double-teams and still make plays. Randolph also registered 24 pancake blocks as an offensive guard and was recruited for that position by many schools.

“Raynard is probably the best lineman I’ve ever coached,” said Gwynn Park’s Danny Hayes, who has produced a slew of Division I prospects during his tenure at the Prince George’s County school. Great strength is manifested in 325 pound bench press and 450 pound squat lift."

while I love TOB and he def. has us going in the right direction.......I will always miss some of Chuck's exciting signing days. I think my favorite was when Willie and DeMario committed to us on signing day. (Although we also missed on Brent Schaffer that day which I guess really isn't a bad thing)

UNC focused on quality, not quantity, of recruits really, quality not quantity when you sign 12312312 players in one class

Expected group includes 12 of top 35 players in the state, but question remains: Is there room on the roster?

With one of the nation's top recruiting classes, UNC football coach Butch Davis says questions about fitting everyone on the roster don't worry him.

CHAPEL HILL North Carolina is expected to sign one of the top 10 football recruiting classes in the country Wednesday. It will include 12 of the top 35 players in the state, seven of whom are rated four-star or higher by rivals.com.

The question now is: How will the Tar Heels make room for them all?

The NCAA allows teams to sign 25 players each year. North Carolina has 29 commitments, which isn't unusual, considering N.C. State and Duke both have 27. The bigger concern for North Carolina, considering its small outgoing senior class, is the limit of 85 scholarships per year.

Under NCAA rules, coaches are not allowed to talk about prospects until they are signed, so coach Butch Davis could not comment specifically on how North Carolina would whittle under the limit.

But Davis said Friday he's not worried about reaching the limit.

“There was never any doubt – never any doubt at all,” he said.

The Tar Heels, who used all 85 scholarships last season, lose 13 seniors, including Jabir Jones, a walk-on who was put on scholarship.

Junior receiver Hakeem Nicks left early for the NFL draft, opening up a 14th slot.

Quarterback Cameron Sexton, a redshirt junior, will graduate in May and transfer to a Division II school. In addition, redshirt juniors Richie Rich and Kenton Thornton andsophomore B.J. Phillips have decided to graduate and not return to the team.Graduate in 2 years??? really now???

Darius Powell and Tavorris Jolly were dismissed from the team this season for violating team rules. Kennedy Tinsley was suspended, and it's unclear if he will return.

Reserve offensive linemen Zack Handerson and Morgan Randall will go on a medical hardship scholarships next season because of reported shoulder injuries. That means they won't count toward the 85 limit.

That leaves 22 scholarship openings – and perhaps 23, depending on whether Tinsley returns.

If any of the current commitments “grayshirt” – which means they would not enroll until the second semester in January 2010 – they will be counted with the 2010-11 class. (A current grayshirt example is Kevin Reddick, who signed last February and originally failed to qualify before enrolling last month. He will count toward the team's 25/85 limit for this coming season.)

In addition, it's unclear if any other players might qualify for medical hardship scholarships, which recruits might fail to qualify, or who, if any, will choose to go elsewhere.

“You never know how many available scholarships you're going to have,” Davis said. “… You don't know who's going to get hurt and have career-ending injuries; you don't know who is going to graduate, and feel very comfortable and feel like, ‘I had a great four-year career; I'm not going to the NFL, but I had a great career, I'm going to get my degree, I'm going to move on with my life.'”

So how does Davis tell a recruit, “Come to my school, I have a scholarship for you?” when he doesn't know how many are available?

“Thirty-five years of experience,” Davis said, adding that he factors in the potential for early graduates and injuries in the equation.

In the future, Davis said, he hopes to build the program to a point where senior classes number between 17 and 20 players per year. That will make for more consistent recruiting numbers, and perhaps a few more victories.

“I watched the Orange Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl, the Rose Bowl, the national championship game, (and) Florida was the only team that had less than 15 to 18 seniors,” he said. “Most all of them had 18, 19, 20.”

In the meantime, he's working on signing the best classes as possible, no matter the number.

Davis, who just completed his second season at North Carolina, said getting the best recruits in-state is his first priority.

A year after the Tar Heels took in a less-heralded haul of in-state recruits, analysts said Davis has rebounded with a strong class.

“Tennessee, South Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech have consistently recruited well in North Carolina, but UNC dominated in-state,” said Jamie Newberg, a national analyst for rivals.com.

Newberg calls the class “exceptional,” but Davis thinks it can only get better.

“It's not the culmination, but it's climbing the mountain,” Davis said.

Article on the effect the internet has had on recruiting.

http://msn.foxsports.com/cfb/story/9172486/Internet-has-taken-recruiting-to-a-new-level

This was at the bottom of the article. I don't remember this. Would have been during the MOC era. Just thought it was interesting.

Quote :
"A dozen years ago, I wrote a story on a high school receiver who thought he had a scholarship offer to North Carolina State, only to discover, as Signing Day approached, that the scholarship hadn't really been offered. Word filtered out on a recruiting website, which was news to him."

Did the kid not have an offer letter? Sounds a little like the guy that staged the press conference when he actually had no offers.

Yeah recruits usually get a formal letter offering the scholarship. The letter details all the expenses their scholarship will cover, as well as conditions that they must meet in order to keep it.

The few players to watch for are Jarvis Byrd, Asa Watson, Denzell Good, Rashard Smith, Brandon Bishop, and James Washington IMO....and those are just some of the higher ranked ones. Tons of solid depth in this class. If you get a chance to see film on any of the recruits, watch it. THey look damn good.
