Ward named second star of the week for the short week. Woot. Hopefully he'll be more consistent down the stretch so that we can make the playoffs (and hopefully not be 8th and facing Boston).

The "We Need Mo Wins Meter"! I honestly think in the final 34 games of the year, the Canes are going to have to win at least 22 giving them at least 95 points. I think that should be the goal to get at least 95 or they probably won't make it. This is a pretty tight race and I think they need to go on a fairly long win streak (like 05/06s two streaks of at least 9 wins), especially since the losing streak this month complicated matters just a little.

There was no reason to lose that game with the amount of puck possession we had in their zone. The transition defense was not where it needed to be. But with that amount of time in our offensive zone, we should be able to score more than two fucking goals

On another note, the Rag's penalty kill is really good

Haven't been to a game in a few years and am thinking about going Saturday night...how would you guys recommend getting tickets?

Buying from a scalper before the game? Ticketmaster?

Depends on where you are trying to sit. For whatever reason the cheap seats upstairs have barely sold out all season, so there will probably be $10 tickets at the ticket office on Saturday. That's the best way to go about it if you are trying to get cheap tickets.

Now, if you are trying to get good seats downstairs, I'm not sure about the best way to do that. Seems like nearly every game there is some kind of offer to get a deal on lower bowl seats so I'd see if there's anything for Saturday with that. Still would cost more than $10.

So how do we feel about the Staal deal now?

Quote :
"In a 2 p.m. news conference at Joe Louis Arena, the Red Wings will announce they have signed Zetterberg to a long-term extension. It will be a 12-year deal worth slightly more than $72 million, making it the longest and most lucrative (in total value) contract in franchise history."

An average of about $6 million per year for Zetterberg

Length of the contract could be an issue I guess if something happens to him, but still, a good bargain.

I still can't believe the Isles signed their goalie for 15 years. What the hell were they thinking?

That hasn't been my experience. We've tried to get the $10 tickets several games this season to find them sold out. We won tickets for Thursday, so it's not an issue this time. I think we've only gotten the $10 seats twice. If you want those, it's best to go early, like before 3pm.

Hmm, that's weird, I guess they don't have as much of the $10 tickets as they used too, it still looks so empty upstairs sometimes.

greatly overpaid?

it's pretty much commensurate with the top forwards in the league

except of course for Detroit, who somehow continues to get their players to accept decent deals so they can continue to field exceptional teams year after year, as well as drafting incredibly well.

god Detroit is so fucking good.

\/ true, but you also sign him to that deal with the expectation that soon people who are at Staal's level will most likely be getting a bigger payday. it looks like a lot now, but in a few years, it'll probably be pretty decent.

Ehh well in fairness there are are only 3 players in the NHL that will be making more money than Eric Staal when his new deal kicks in next year.

Their names are

Sidney Crosby
Alexander Ovechkin
Evgeni Malkin

I guess that's technically not true. There will be a lot of players making more money, but those 3 are the only ones with a higher cap hit since Staal's contract is heavily backloaded.

These three guys lead the league in scoring with
Malkin- 71 points
Crosby- 64 points
Ovechkin - 60 points.

Eric Staal is 63 in scoring with 35 points.

eric staal could be a top forward though. Look at what he did after valentines day last year-- he was a top scorer in the league in that period. (At least, that's what I remember...)

yeah, he's streaky and underperforming his potential. but he is a bad, bad man when the light is on.

he could be a top performer....but he's not!

That's why he's overpaid. But 35 points is just not acceptable.

^but he is getting paid that much because any other team would pay that much to sign him. you can't just give your top player and future captain away, say if someone offered him 10mil a year, which I think someone would (I mean look at what Briere is getting paid)

Are you a fucking moron? You don't pay a person 10 million dollars for being on pace for 59 pts. Let him go for a 1st round pick then. It's not smart to make an underachiever and slacker a captain of your team and lock that much salary in him; then you definitely will never have any other elite players. You would be the next 'Islanders' in no time.

Part of Staal's problem is everything has been given to him because of that 100 point season. The Cup, the C, and a great contract. Someone needs to tell Sutter he can be the future if he gives it his all.

Eric Staal is worth 6 mil a year TOPS, and that's only because I still hope for his old form.

not saying he doesn't need to kick it into gear, but this is just his fifth year.

For a comparison, the lightening won the cup in vinny lecavalier's fifth season, and he, as their top player, had 66 points, staal isnt on pace for that yet, but if staal turns it on, he could easily obtain that.

I think Staal plays best when the team is on his back, i.e. last year when Roddy was out, just sayin...

^and I can't wait to see Sutter when he adds some muscle...he has great potential, I can see some future leadership in him as well.

i didn't agree that he was worth 10 mil, i don't think he is, and I don't think he will ever be unless he strings together multiple 100 point seasons. which he has the potential to, and thats why we hold onto him.

edit: actually even then 10 mil would push it
