I wonder if it's a Honda thing. It's irritating to have to pull the throttle bodies just to get to the thermostat housing because it just kind of sits in the valley between heads held in place by all the coolant hoses. It wasn't really difficult, just had to dig through a lot of shit.4/26/2013 2:49:35 PM |

haha, yep Mine is at the back under the GD intake manifold and crowded by hoses. It's doable with my girl hands without pulling the manifold, but it's a giant pain in the ass. 4/26/2013 2:55:07 PM |

Got my e36 325i about two weeks ago. Since then I had: Replaced valve cover gasket. New plugs. Cleaned and rerouted all the coil wires and plug boots (since the leaky gasket got oil all in them). Repaired two windows that didn't go up and down properly. Replaced a bunch of burnt out dash lights. Replaced clamps on the radiator hoses (which were new, just they reused the shitty clamps).
And now looks like it might all have been for nothing after someone rear-ended it on Avent Ferry today. Slowed for a merging Wolfline bus and he smacked into me at 20-25mph. Pushed the rear bumper up and forward and cracked the floor pan in the trunk . . . . might be totaled out.
Ah, well. At least it was 100% his fault and the cop gave him multiple tickets (and took the plate off his car right there). 4/26/2013 11:39:24 PM |

Yeah, both me and the other guy were fine. Though since he was driving on a suspended license, 8 month expired plate, and with no insurance he probably has some serious legal problems on the way. Thankfully I have uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.
sumfoo1: really all I paid for was the gasket and plugs, and some replacement plastic sliders for the windows. It was just a lot of labor on my part.
Guess I have to wait for them to put it on a machine and see if anything is bent. It still seems to drive fine, but my mechanic buddy tells me there's a very strong likelihood the alignment is fucked and it will chew through tires. 4/27/2013 3:19:35 PM |

Replaced right rear caliper on the miata. Parking brake and adjuster gears were sticking causing a very slight drag when i drove, but the parking brake would stick on. easier to replace than rebuild. Still smelling brake fluid.
Oh yeah, it had a dead battery for some reason so jumped it and drove around for some errands for a while. 4/27/2013 8:34:42 PM |

Not myself. Don't have the time or skill.
Either way, my car ('10 Lancer Sportback GTS) has been louder than usual for a month, and has been randomly pulling either way while I'm driving and even more aggressively when I am braking. I had her aligned five months ago with a "lifetime" service because of the pulling. After the alignment, I still noticed it. A month later, I put the snow tires on until end of March. With the snow tires on, I didn't notice any pulling. As soon as I put my OEMs back on, though, the pulling came back. I took her into Firestone today for an oil change (see first sentence) and alignment and mentioned the pulling to the mechanic. He calls me later and asks if I notice any increased road noise, and he said it could be a back front left wheel bearing. He thought it may be under warranty, because it's about $620 to replace. He said the tires were also due for replacement, so he quoted me $1600 for the bearing and four Bridgestone Potenza RE970 PPs, with a larger size tire (215/45 R18 to 225/40 R18).
There isn't a dealer I trust to take my car and fix the bearing under a week, regardless of warranty, so I told Firestone to do it.
So that's that. About the noise, though...it was one of the first things I noticed about the car...it's pretty loud on the road (that is, isn't well isolated from the outside).
Any ways to fix it? 4/28/2013 1:14:37 AM |

Kdogg I hate to diagnose a noise over the Internet, but the guys at Firestones that do alignments are usually pretty good. If you still have a noise or pull take it back. About the only tires that are going to take a road noise out of that car re michelins or continental tires. 4/28/2013 11:40:41 AM |

Replaced the shift knob that got ripped off by co-driver in last East TN autox Readjusted the front under-body panel, brake duct, and fender liners that got fubar'ed by co-driver hitting a cone hard at the last autox at ZMax in Charlotte (front right wheel was rubbing the fender liner) Rerouted the remote shock reservoir hose that was rubbing on hard lefts due to the same issues with the plastic crap in the front (not a good thing to rub, ugh) Used JB Weld to rebuild a plastic tab on the fog light that had broken off from the same cone, making the fog light not mount...we'll see today if I can make it mount right

Replaced a window regulator in my Crown Vic, nice to have a working driver's side window again.
Then took to a local shop (I no longer have a driveway, garage, or much of anywhere to work) and had the rear shocks replaced, some damage I did to the exhaust fixed (busted off two clips by backing into a low brick planter ) and my mystery noise diagnosed/fixed (turned out to be a bent backing plate on a rear rotor). 5/2/2013 8:45:55 PM |

just the new disk brake (rotor, bracket and caliper are all bent), the spindle and the wheel need to be replaced...
honestly i consider it good luck. i didn't have my seat belt on (because i don't have to have it on) and we were going 65 in the left hand lane when the left front let go with a 6' ditch... to our left..
so for there to be no body damage and minimal mechanical damage... i'm pretty happy.... 5/11/2013 1:20:05 PM |

Washed the Insight and replaced the battery. It was still on the OEM battery after >3 years and >70k miles, so that's not too terrible.
It was a sonofabitch to find a new battery for it, though. Auto Zone had it in their top-tier line. That's it. No luck at Advance, O'Rielly, Wal-Mart, or Batteries Plus. It's a fucking 151-group case. Speaking of which, regular parts stores don't carry shit for this car. It's way easier to find parts for a fucking C5 Z06. I have to order air filters, cabin air filters, fucking everything off the internet. 5/12/2013 9:25:10 PM |

^^^Sucks about your Thunderbird. I was in a car with a friend when it lost a control arm. Ended up totaling the car.
^^What gen Insight? Why on earth would you buy one?
Did the rear pads Thursday.
Unfortunately the Land Cruiser has developed an exhaust leak from a crack in a manifold. Apparently its common on the 2UZ-FE. Should I order OEM replacements that now have reportedly better quality control (according to the forums) or should I order stainless headers from a shop called Doug Thorley in California? $400 price difference. Looks like it's a pain in the ass job involving every socket known to man and temporarily lifting the engine off its mounts.
Here's dyno results from somebody else on the same car.

Front end is already apart ordered mustang spindles and mustang brakes for it. They are a 1.5 inch drop with a little more caster and a little more trail. Also the use of mustang brakes seems beneficial. 5/12/2013 11:07:54 PM |

thats a pretty good hp percentage increase and presumably mileage increase if you modify your driving. ive never seen stainless headers last though, and that's a job i'd never want to do twice. 5/13/2013 12:12:49 AM |

^^ just make sure the headers are sturdy. Usually headers are more prone to cracking than manifolds. 5/13/2013 6:57:05 AM |
