Word on the street is that sources say the rumor is that they are hearing from unidentified higher-ups close to the situation that it's likely that by as early as the end of this week, possibly as late as the end of August, Debbie Yow will announce a series of coaching hires that will shake the College sports world. When I asked if that meant Sean Miller as our new BB coach and Bill Cower as our FB coach-in-waiting, I didn't receive a worded response, but rather a smile. I still can't believe we just compared the coaching ability Barnes to Shaka Smart
One coach has his team top 5 in the country in Defense.
The other is 9th in his crappy conference.
Awesome.

what's the opposite of BOAST BOAST BOAST?
because you sad anti-anyone fuckers are bumpin that shit from the trunk right now
beggars cant be choosers, and if we get a Top 5 this season, 16 straight NCAA appearance coach right now after 20+ years of scraping the bottom of the fucking ACC barrel, we have pulled off the coup of the fucking millennium and you all need to stfu and know your fucking place. Yes Miller is on the upswing, but Barnes is consistently good.

I think that's Yows dilemma.
Do you go ahead and take Barnes before he changes his mind or do you wait on some of the guys currently in the tourney.
We've been having this argument. If you wait, miss out on Barnes...get turned down by Miller (who you were waiting on) and ended up with a mid-major it would be a pretty crappy scenario.
Glad I'm not Yow

Quote : | "Shaka Smart...at this point... is nothing more than a hot mid major. Those come by every year and 9-of-10 get thier tails handed to them in the big leagues" |
Considering that the overwhelming majority of coaching hires come from mid-majors, I think you are very incorrect with the "9-of-10" figure...unless you're saying 90% of coaches are consistently getting their asses handed to them.
And it's almost a moot point to argue Smart's coaching ability because he has barely coached long enough to form an opinion. It's more of an opinion on not thinking that Barnes is that great of a coach. However...he is a great recruiter, which can overcome mediocre coaching...but also leaves your team with an empty trophy case while having many All-Americans.
I also like Grant better than Smart. It can be said that Smart is winning with Grant's players right now (starts are mostly juniors and seniors).
I'll repeat that I think there's no way in hell we could turn down Barnes...but I would take Miller over Barnes and I wouldn't be disappointed if we didn't get Barnes and got someone like Grant.3/22/2011 5:20:08 PM |

I'm saying that 9-of-10 of the mid majors that get high major jobs get canned within 7-8 years....especially at places like NC State. (Obviously a made up statistic to make a point)
For every Sean Miller, there are Pete Gillens, Todd Lickliters, Paul Hewitt's, etc etc etc etc etc.
I like Grant (thus far) too, but he's not worth the money it would take to get him.
As far as Barnes coaching ability.... I'll agree he's not the best in game coach. However, in 13 years at Texas, he has finished the season ranked in the top 10 5 times. He's finished in the top 25 in 11 of 13 seasons. Seriously Pack fans, we've finished 10th in the ACC for the past 5 years
Just think about that for a second. He's finished in the top 25 11 times in 13 seasons. Top 10 in 5 of those
We may not win a title, but dangit if we won't actually be fun to watch and will be a nationally relevant program
...and I'm not singling you out jlbrick...just saying. I'd do cartwheels for Barnes. I'd rather have Miller, for sure though

On Packbacker's point of mid-major hires getting canned:
Wikipedia has lists of coaching changes, the oldest I can find is from the 2002-03 season (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002%E2%80%9303_NCAA_Division_I_men%27s_basketball_season#Coaching_changes)
Here are the guys who went from non-BCS jobs to BCS jobs
Clemson - Oliver Purnell (Dayton), quit Georgia - Dennis Felton (assistant), fired Illinois - Bruce Weber (Southern Illinois) Iowa State - Larry Eustachy (Utah State), quit Penn State - Jerry Dunn (assistant), fired? Pitt - Jamie Dixon (assistant) VT - Seth Greenberg (Long Beach State), eh
Seven coaches, two success stories. Not an exhaustive study, but it does say something. All told, though, I don't have a problem with Yow hiring a mid-major guy if he's the right guy.] 3/22/2011 5:41:19 PM |

If we're just talking salary, then I could see your point. But if Barnes' ultimate goal is Final Fours and NCAA championships, he's better off in Austin.
I honestly see no reason why he would want to leave. He's already built the foundation for a long and storied career at Texas.

I have "heard" that Barnes wanted the job last time and even called a former player to have him get the info to Fowler, which he did. After not hearing anything back for a week Barnes called said person to verify he did pass along the information and was told yes. When fowler got around to calling barnes after whiffing on others barnes basically said fuck you I'm not some no name coach desperate for your job. No idea how much truth there is to it but sounds plausible and who I heard it from wouldn't have any real reason to lie about it. 3/22/2011 6:28:41 PM |

^^What metric are you using? We were a team with 5 straight NCAA appearances. Our team has regressed on the court. The rebuilding job will be much more difficult now than it was 5 years ago. 5 years ago we were a team that needed to get over the hump, but now we're starting over.
I mean, I know you can say that we have more talent in the cupboard than 5 years ago, and I won't disagree with that. But as far as on the court success goes, we're certainly worse than we were 5 years ago. We were just two years removed from a Sweet 16 appearance when we lost Herb. We didn't even make the NIT this year. As far as name recognition, program momentum, and consistency are concerned, we've gotten worse. So the challenge of building this program back up will be harder. I'm not saying the pieces aren't in place for the right coach to come along and make a splash, but it's hard for me to believe that we're closer to turning that corner than we were 5 years ago. 3/22/2011 7:01:29 PM |
