not sure how much reach or success they'll eventually have but I was able to enjoy several beer from Ass Clown (Cornelius, NC) this weekend after their official Charlotte launch party at VBGB tap room. organic complex ingredients is their modus operandi and I was impressed overall.

? Orange Spice IPA
? Dark Chocolate Blueberry Porter
? Vanilla Bean Chocolate Brown Ale

those were the three I tried ranking in reverse order.

So they sat around and thought about brand names, and "Ass Clown" is what they came up with?

^^yeah, not really sure the origin of the name and from what I do know the company is mainly just one guy right now which is why they have been so delayed in coming to market and getting distribution.

if you google and go to their website they have 5-6 "year rounds" that are definitely unique and he has a list of 20+ other eccentric pilot/seasonals. with all of these different and unique recipes I have a hard time believing they'll be able to produce and deliver enough to have any sort of wide distribution. but we'll see.

^the tasting room has some strange hours. M-F and only open until 5:30 so it's almost impossible for the working crowd to stop by

Oh snap...check out what my local beer shop is doing today:

Quote :
"It's On: Terrapin Wake-N-Moo Growlers are happening! (1/24)

No, that's not a typo. Tomorrow (Tuesday) at 5pm, we'll be designating our "Rare Beer Tuesday" time-slot for offering growlers of an all time favorite, house blended concoction of two of Terrapin's most adored seasonal offerings: Wake-N-Bake Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout and Moo-Hoo Chocolate Milk Stout! We'll be mixing growler fills in a 50/50 blend of these two outrageous delicacies for a finished product, affectionately dubbed "Wake-N-Moo", that combines all of the amazing notes of roasted coffee and chocolaty goodness in to one palate pleasing decadently indulgent creation! (Of course, you may opt to purchase growler fills of either beer in their original, non-blended form too.) We expect these to be popular, first come first served- don't procrastinate!"

Questions is whether I get the combo or just the oatmeal coffee stout. I love the Wake-n-bake sooo much...I don't know if I want to taint it (although it's good) with the moo-hoo. I've already had my chocolate fill with the Southern Tier Choklat last week. What say you, t-dub??

I've only had in in bottles, and I agree. Also, I want to try mixing it w/WNB on my own.

Can someone educate me on growler laws? Apparently in 4/2011 the NC law was changed to allow growlers to be filled "anywhere" provided the filling party identifies what is currently in the growler.

NoDa brewing in Charlotte has taken this to mean all labels must be removed and affixed with a single, new label. Other people have told me this is false...

^^the only thing i've been told at NoDa is they don't want to fill other brewery's growlers. So you have to buy a new NoDa growler if you want NoDa beer. I've never heard them mention any other labeling issues. And i guess i can understand that, they want their logo and brand out as much as possible. but i've had my olde hickory growlers filled at other places and taken a red oak growler to olde hickory a few times as well and never had any issues. i've always thought of it as the supporting local bond.

But i've never run into any issues anywhere else with growler 'labels'. what exactly did they say?

Some people may be familiar with Boulder Beer Company from Boulder, CO already. Just got out of a meeting with them tonight and their beers will soon be available in local grocery stores and they are already filling orders at on premise accounts in Raleigh. Their Planet Porter on nitro at World of Beer available starting tonight.

The woman there said "the law" required them to remove all existing labels, adhered and/or printed, and apply a single new label to the bottle representing the filling brewery/bar. It sounded like their specific rule, rather than an all-encompassing law. I've read elsewhere that other bars/breweries will just put a little sticker on the growler and be done with it...

My local beer shop got #1 Best Beer Retailer in the US (#2 in the world) by RateBeer:

http://www.ratebeer.com/RateBeerBest/table_2011.asp?title=Best+Beer+Retailers+2011&file=retailers_places_2011.csv

I will be cracking open my growler of Wake-n-Moo tonight as well while watching the State/UNC game and eating some home cooked Indian food (not a great combination...but I can't keep the growler unopened any longer and I was invited to a good friend's house for Indian cuisine).

@ Sparkey - Spaten is really good. What style of beer do you want?
A pilsner, wheat, something dark...

Erdinger Weissbier Dunkel

This is a goood beer.

i like all styles but i wanted something that is a little less popular. I do like Spaten but I have a feeling a lot of people will be bringing either Spaten or Becks.

Also, Warsteiner is another good choice.
I went through a Spaten phase. It is a good smooth beer and I know what you mean about everyone bringing it.

Warsteiner is a good choice for something you can get at Teeter. If you're willing to go to total wine/whole foods, my personal recommendation would be G. Schneider & Sohn Aventinus:

It's a wheat doppelbock, malty and smooth, a little potent (8.2 %). One of my favorites and not too expensive, though I've never seen it in a six pack, only 16.9 oz bottles.

Or for something truly different from Deutschland you can try a rauchbier (smoked beer). Very unusual and not for everyone, but I like them.

[Edited on January 26, 2012 at 4:11 PM. Reason : I'll have to try that Erdinger sometime. Love German beers.]

It's outstanding, in my opinion. (Also reviewed very well on beeradvocate). Now that you mention it I'm not sure if I've ever seen it at TW, but it's definitely been at Whole Foods every time I've gone beer shopping there.
