Who's all been to the Duckworth's on park road?
They're opening one in Ballantyne and I want the inside scoop 11/3/2011 11:03:52 AM |

It's pretty good, but nothing special enough that it doesn't get lost in the shuffle.
Usually has about 50 beers on tap. A couple hundred more available by bottle. They have a sheet with all the different beers available and they usually have 5 per night that are on draft special for $5/pint, I think.
Food is pretty good, I've had pizza there and a philly cheese steak. Has lots of tvs and a big bar area. 11/3/2011 11:07:38 AM |

I've never been inside the place but I've had the food a few times. I like their chicken Philly. 11/3/2011 4:42:05 PM |

I love Duckworth's & $2.50 everything on draft on Tuesday & Thursday makes it worth the drive, err, ride, from Flying Saucer Land. Have yet to check out the Ballantyne or Mooresville shops. 11/14/2011 3:41:47 PM |

their food is actually great and a lot better than typical bar fare. Portions are enormous. If you have a couple people try tackling the loaded nachos.
also, if you enjoy buffalo chicken pizza theirs is one of the best i've had. 11/14/2011 4:38:16 PM |

there is a chance I may move to Charlotte next year.
Gonna be there Monday and Tuesday for my wife's job interview. Part of tuesday they set us up with a realtor to look at living arrangements.
If we do move there, we'll rent for the first year, but what are the "nice" parts of town?
What's the ITB equivalent of Charlotte?
I guess ultimately, we'll need to live close to CMC, and look to rent a house for ~$2k/month or less(ideally). 12/2/2011 5:29:22 PM |
Wadhead1 Duke is puke 20897 Posts user info edit post |
CMC Main is off of Morehead, which is in the middle of one of the nicest areas of town called Dilworth. I would recommend looking in Dilworth, some parts of Southend are nice if you are east of South Blvd, also look into Southpark area. You should be able to find something easily, but I can put you in contact with some good Real Estate agents if you're having trouble.] 12/2/2011 5:42:27 PM |
BobbyDigital Thots and Prayers 41777 Posts user info edit post |
CMC is setting us up with an agent, and we'll just "use" him to see some shit for now, but when/if we actually get to the point of signing a lease, I'll use my sister who's also a real estate broker in charlotte... she just won't be in town while we're there next week.
Thanks for the advice, just want to hear from some people that live there and compare with whatever 12/2/2011 9:56:52 PM |

So, it sounds like money won't be an issue if you can afford to live in those areas.
If you're into up and coming and want to get high value at low cost... Check out the Wesley Heights area. Probably a 5 - 10 minute drive at any time of day to CMC. 12/5/2011 3:53:32 PM |

Meh, Wesley Heights is still a bit shady, especially if he wants to let his daughter run around. 12/5/2011 4:00:43 PM |

Elizabeth is another good area to consider, then. 12/5/2011 4:21:14 PM |
BobbyDigital Thots and Prayers 41777 Posts user info edit post |
I mean, we're definitely going to have to downsize from the size house we have now, but we're gonna rent for the first year and get a feel for the city. maybe we'll hate being in a smaller house and the commute won't seem so bad, and move further out once we're ready to buy.
The houses about 20 minutes south of uptown are much more bang for the buck, but the hour commute each way in rush hour traffic does not appeal to us. We drove from the Ballantyne area to CMC, and with no traffic (Monday at 11a.m.) it took 28 minutes.
Anyway, those are things we'll figure out once we live in the city for a while and get better acquainted with those things, all assuming she gets and accepts an offer from CMC. 12/5/2011 4:55:30 PM |
Jeepin4x4 #Pack9 35774 Posts user info edit post |
there is always traffic in Ballantyne these days.
I too, recommend Dilworth, Elizabeth, and Myers Park. I live in Elizabeth right near CMC Mercy and Presbyterian and it's very nice. Honestly, those three neighborhoods are so close together you can get to any of them in a matter of minutes. Check out the houses in Elizabeth between 4th and 7th street and also on the north side of 7th street, the neighborhood called Chantilly. 12/5/2011 5:08:09 PM |

Bobby, I'll tell you what to do. Find a house for rent near Selwyn Ave., like this one for instance: MLS#: 2052493 http://www.carolinahome.com/findahome.aspx
Address is 126 Tranquill Ave.
You'll be walking distance to Selwyn Pub (a little East Village-like but not bad), Mellow Mushroom and some other stuff. Your wife will be close to CMC. DO IT.] 12/5/2011 11:18:28 PM |

I've lived on Selwyn for the last 8 years though, so I'm clearly an advocate

Siemens and Ingersoll-Rand are also here. Don't know how valid those are for you, though. 12/13/2011 3:20:35 PM |

hp, IBM/lenovo. I would definitely look into the banks in the area as well if you might be interested in applying your technical skills/knowledge to something other than R&D stuff. BB&T, Wells, and BofA (duh) have a lot of tech people in the area. 12/13/2011 11:20:30 PM |

^ go ahead and throw the financial services companies in there too. TIAA Cref, and Vanguard both have significant IT/development/data warehousing presence. And there is a new (to the area) company called Citco that deals with hedge fund software which is supposed to hire like 300+ people over the next two years. I don't know if all 300 are strictly tech positions, but that seemed like the bulk of what they were listing for when I was looking.

I have to go to Charlotte for a conference in March and it's been at least 5 years since I was last down there. Where would be the best place to stay to have something to do at night? I don't really care about being close to where the conference is since I'm driving down there. 2/3/2012 8:50:46 AM |

I was thinking probably uptown. I want a place to get a nice dinner, walk around, maybe do some window shopping. I'll probably hit up the mall on my way back to Raleigh so don't really care about staying close to it. 2/3/2012 9:27:00 AM |

Are you talking about Concord Mills mall? There's another mall called Southpark that is about 15 minutes south of uptown. It's got a ton of restaurants around it, as well as the aforementioned window shopping you were talking about.
You can stay at the Epicentre, there's an Aloft hotel there. There is also a Marriott off of Trade st., a Hilton somewhere, a place called the Dunhill, etc. The Westin is nice, but it's a little more of a walk to the restaurants and places that will be open in the evening. The Epicentre has a great sushi place, five guys, jason's deli, wild wing cafe, a restaurant called Mez that I like a lot, etc. Not really shopping to do around there though.
Southpark has some great restaurants near it, especially a Burger/Sushi place called Cowfish. There's a Doubletree at Southpark, as well as another hotel off of Rexford, I think it's a Marriott or something like that... 2/3/2012 9:46:25 AM |
