Taking the starters out was killer. Taking players out for more than a play when they have foul trouble, especially when you have no depth, is fucking stupid.

Look at the shots Williams and Leslie bricked when they came back in. You took them out because you thought they would be clutch at the end of the game. Instead, they came in shooting cold.

It's better to leave them in and risk the chance they don't foul out. You keep them warmed up, and you don't let Duke get momentum.

If they foul out, they foul out. It was going to happen, anyway. We did Duke's job for them by taking our 3 starters out.

Taking players out is bad coaching folk knowledge that gets perpetuated by people who don't use their brains and analyze what actually happens in games.

It's like when doctors used to bleed people to solve sicknesses. Just complete hokum based on nonsense.

He's right. Its a lot harder to come back from down 10 in the last 2 minutes than the last five. Let those guys foul out in the natural rotation.

I think we were screwed anyway because they weren't going to put any effort on d to avoid fouling out. we gave up so many layups in the last 10 minutes. we didn't give up a single layup before the barrage of whistles.

They were getting layups until we started bringing Leslie over to help. They were getting layups on Alex Johnson.

AJ explicitly gave up 2 3s to Curry by going under screens on out of bounds play. This is why you need the starters in as much as possible. CJ williams in foul trouble plays just as badly as AJ on defense. Leslie and Howell in foul trouble play much, much better than fucking Painter and TDT

As it is, we got them in for about 5 mins at the end there before they fouled out, and that's because we had to foul. We probably could have gotten more, higher quality (offensively) minutes if we let them play through it.

Mostly what was shocking was no TO, or plan with the ball down 3. Looked crazy similar to UVA. Brown plays nervous at the end. I mean, he stepped on the sideline for god sake.

^^^it was less about the importance of losing howell and more about them continuing their run rather than us forcing a charge/turnover and having a chance to re-extend the lead a bit. it was a killer. also, while i agree that leslie was much better this game, there's a huge difference between going from howell/leslie to howell/painter and going from howell/painter to painter/de thaey.

^^ no, it was over when we had to sit three of our starters due to 4 bullshit foul calls in the first 3 minutes of the 2nd half. three of our starters played a total of 60 minutes. Two of our bench players were forced to play more minutes than 3 of our starters

both howell and leslie had 5th fouls that described them as a player

howell has a ton of heart and busts ass but he makes some of the dumbest plays you'll ever see like picking up a 5th and giving away free throws by hedging a screen at the half court line

leslie is a great talent but generally couldnt give two shits so he gets a useless 5th foul by hounding a guy holding a ball in a scenario that NEVER draws a turnover

The only counter to the "foul" thing is you do remove players whose aggressiveness is affected because they're afraid of fouling out, particularly if you have quality depth.
