I'm not going to defend Fowler's record as AD. The results speak for themselves. We suck, he's at the helm, he should get the blame.
But we did just get a regional in baseball over teams that were higher ranked. Might not have advanced if we were on the road. The new facilities are the reason. He deserves some credit for that. 6/5/2008 12:39:31 PM |

I guess they haven't finalized a deal or decided on a series that's a few years off. I know that we were also talking to UMass. Most uneducated bball fans might go "UMass why are we playing them", but they are a historically decent program and even made a Final Four with Calipari. A game against UMass who is usually decent would be good for the RPI but a game that we would usually win. They made it to the NIT championship game this year. Plus I'd rather lose to UMass than ECU. 6/7/2008 4:02:26 PM |

this is sfn's article about it:
Quote : | "Let me just say…I LOVE listening to Coach Lowe. Nobody is perfect, but I really appreciate his articluation of his perspective.
A couple of quotes from Coach Lowe:
“As a competitor, the only thing I was thinking about (at the end of the year) was getting started again”
“I really want to look forward”
In a morning show interview with candid answers, NC State basketball coach Sidney Lowe addressed a number of issues from last season and looked ahead to next season. Concerning the widely discussed chemistry issues that possibly stemmed from JJ Hickson’s playing time, Lowe placed blame all around, but focused on players accepting their roles in order to win as a team. Lowe, who is entering his 3rd year coaching the Wolfpack, also talks about what he has learned from working in the college game and the influences surrounding college players that the pros don’t experience.
* Good news is that the team only got 5 days off at the end of the year before being called back for conditioning. SFN Comment - This is in contrast to what appeared to be only 5 days of conditioning for the team for all of last summer.
* Adam Gold did a good job of probing what he wanted to probe. SFN Comment: This is not a criticism, but I would like to see that kind of probing
* Coach expects Brandon Costner to have a very good year. SFN Comment: We hope Brandon Costner has a very good year. However, the ONLY way that Costner has a year that resembles his freshman year instead of his sophomore year will be if he plays like a power forward who has a decent shot as opposed to plays like a wing forward who is too big and too slow forhis position.)
* AG brought up the post players and brought up Tracy Smith’s progress. SFN Comment: At first it felt as though Sidney sidestepped Tracy Smith which scared me due to the rumors that have swirled related to potential eligibility challenges. But, Coach finished his conversation about the post players with reassuring comments about Smith (particularly his

NO contract extension for Sidney http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/college/ncsu/story/1135412.html
N.C. State basketball coach Sidney Lowe is not receiving a contract extension this year.
Lowe, given a six-year contract when he was hired in May 2006, was granted a one-year extension a year ago after the Pack won 20 games and made a strong postseason run. State stumbled to a 15-16 record in Lowe's second season, losing its last nine games and failing to make postseason play.
N.C. State trustees, during a Tuesday meeting, approved a three-year contract extension for Wolfpack baseball coach Elliott Avent. There was no rollover recommendation for Lowe.
Athletic director Lee Fowler said Tuesday that Lowe was not being penalized for the disappointing season. Fowler said his preference and his objective was to have his coaches working on contracts with five-year maximums, limiting the university's financial liability.
"I talked with Sidney about my decision to go with five-year contracts and he did not raise an issue with any of it," Fowler said. "There is more guaranteed money involved in contracts than ever before, and it's in the best interests of the university to have five-year contracts."
There is one exception to the five-year limit -- football coach Tom O'Brien, who signed a seven-year deal with NCSU. O'Brien, 5-7 in his first season, is in line for a one-year rollover, Fowler said. NCSU trustees did not vote on an extension for O'Brien because O'Brien's lawyer is out of the country. Fowler said there still is contractual language to be agreed on.
Fowler said contract negotiations with O'Brien began in January after North Carolina football coach Butch Davis was granted a one-year extension through 2014 and a pay raise. Davis was 4-8 in his first season.
"With Tom, we wanted to make a positive statement," Fowler said.
Fowler said he expects O'Brien's contract to eventually be in line with a goal of having all coaches in five-year deals.
Lowe could not be reached Tuesday. Trustees chairman McQueen Campbell said he approved of Fowler's approach to contracts.
"I think five years is fair to the coaches and I think five years is fair to the institution, so I think it's a good mix for both," Campbell said Tuesday. "I think, long term, that's what Lee wants to do. Lee has had some insight into the future and has had this plan in place for the last year or two in trying to figure out a long-range plan.
"It wasn't a lack of confidence [in Lowe]. It was more of a bigger-picture type scenario trying to get all the coaches' contracts in line."
When Lowe was hired, Fowler noted Lowe's contract called for renegotiation after the first two years, saying his "druthers" was to go to five-year contracts for coaches.
Fowler said he discusses all contract proposals with Chancellor James Oblinger, then Fowler's job is to make recommendations for the trustees to consider.
Avent, whose team won an NCAA regional this year and advanced to Super Regional play for the first time since 2003, now has a five-year pact that runs through 2013.
"The fact I have a five-year contract means people want you to be here," Avent said. "To me, being wanted means as much as the contract." 7/9/2008 3:54:16 PM |

Here are the records for our main sports teams since Lee Fowler arrived. I think the numbers speak for themselves, especially non-revenue.
Revenue Sports • Football: 28-36 (.438) • M Basketball: 60-68 (.469) • W Basketball: 63-57 (.525) • Baseball: 109-104 (.512)
Both of the high profile revenue sports, Football and M Basketball, have losing records in ACC play.
Both W Basketball and Baseball have winning records in ACC play.

http://www.news-record.com/content/2008/07/30/article/for_nc_stateaposs_lowe_georgias_always_on_his_mind
Sidney Lowe may still be relatively new to the college basketball recruiting scene, but he's already learned this important axiom:
Relationships trump geography.
N.C. State got two more examples this week when guard Lorenzo Brown and power forward Richard Howell, highly regarded recruits in the class of 2009, committed to the Wolfpack.
Brown (Roswell, Ga.) and Howell (Marietta, Ga.) became the latest Atlanta-area recruits to pick N.C. State, joining J.J. Hickson and Class of 2010 point guard Ryan Harrow (Marietta, Ga.). Clearly, Lowe and his staff have created a pipeline of hoops talent that's running from Georgia to Raleigh.
How did it happen? Relationships.
Strangely enough, the first relationship was forged in Vancouver in 2000. At the time, Lowe was in his first season coaching the NBA's Vancouver Grizzlies, and his star player was Shareef Abdur-Rahim.
Fast forward seven years, to 2007. The Wolfpack is vying for the services of J.J. Hickson. A key influence in Hickson's decision was his fellow Wheeler High School (Marietta, Ga.) alum &ellipses; Abdur-Rahim. Hickson played on Abdur-Rahim's AAU squad, a group originally called Team Reef but later renamed Worldwide Renegades.
"We were familiar with Sidney Lowe for years, even though he wasn't in college," said Desmond Eastmond, the director of Worldwide Renegades.
Abdur-Rahim was a power forward who had enjoyed a strong season in Lowe's offense. Hickson and those around him were convinced the same thing could happen at N.C. State.
"With a point guard or a power forward, you can't go wrong with Sidney Lowe," Eastmond said.
One year later, Hickson was a first-round pick in the NBA draft (19th overall, by Cleveland) and an enthusiastic endorser of Lowe and the Wolfpack to his younger hoops-playing friends back in Georgia.
"That opened up a lot of relationships," said Justin Young, national recruiting analyst for Rivals.com.
It opened the eyes of Brown, a smooth 6-foot-4 athlete who could be used as a shooting guard (Scout.com rates him No. 8 at that position in the Class of 2009) or as a point guard (Rivals.com rates him No. 9 at that position).
Brown confirmed Sunday what has been an open secret for weeks when he committed to the Wolfpack. According to Scout.com recruiting analyst Evan Daniels, Brown had discussed his plans to go to State with Howell, his friend and occasional teammate with the Worldwide Renegades. A day after Brown publicly picked the Wolfpack, Howell, a 6-8 forward (No. 59 Rivals, No. 74 Scout) with a face-up game who has come on strong recently on the AAU circuit, followed suit.
"Obviously with these kids, they talk," Daniels said. "When looking at college situations, it's always cool to go to a place where you might have friend there."
They talk to others in the Atlanta area as well. Harrow, a Class of 2010 commitment, doesn't play for the Worldwide Renegades. But he does know Brown, who has split his AAU time between Worldwide Renegades and Harrow's team, Louis Williams Elite.
More relationships, more commitments for N.C. State.
The Wolfpack next hopes to use its Atlanta-area ties to reel in power forward Derrick Favors, considered by many to be the top recruit in the Class of 2009. Beating out Georgia and Georgia Tech may be too tall an order, but even without Favors, State has established itself as a serious player in Atlanta. Right now, that's a very good place to be.
"It's probably one of the top hoops areas," Daniels said. "The past few years, I think Georgia has been one of, if not the best, places for producing top-level talent." 7/30/2008 11:43:43 AM |
