I visited Port City last June, to be honest I wasn't all that impressed, it was good beer, but I think some of the beers were a bit bitter and some seemed a little lighter in body than I preferred, they were also just starting, so they might have tweaked the recipes since then. I think I enjoyed Mad Fox best, but they don't bottle, just a brewpub/growler. Port City was better than Cap City though. Ever since Bill Madden left Cap City and started Mad Fox, I just don't think Cap City is as good.
On a side note, I got to volunteer at GABF this year, and was placed in the Mid-Atlantic region where I got to pick a brewery to serve beer for.. and because I got to meet Bill Madden in person and enjoyed Mad Fox's beer the best, I naturally chose them. Got to see Bill again and his brewer Charlie Buettner. Great place, great beer.

Something about their Monumental IPA really speaks to me. The Essential tasted way too much like grapefruit but the IPA was very tasty and their Porter is pretty good too.
I'll check out Mad Fox! Thanks for the tip!

so those of you who cellar and age beer.
say you have had a couple decent beers worth aging, but they've been in the fridge for a few months. any damage with removing them from fridge temps to cellar or room temps?
i've been reading that it is no problem at all, but just want to make sure. 2/3/2012 5:59:09 PM |

I've just recently moved several beers that were in my fridge for months (at least) and put them into a 55 degree wine fridge. I would think the temperature change is gradual enough and not dramatic enough to cause any damage to the deliciousness in the bottles. 2/3/2012 6:00:34 PM |

Avanti makes nice wine fridges, even small capacity ones like this that could be suitable for beer: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=avanti+wine+fridge&hl=en&prmd=imvns&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.,cf.osb&biw=1280&bih=933&ix=hca&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=1572402035972753300&sa=X&ei=wHIsT_q8D4HAtgfcxsX3Dw&ved=0CK4BEPMCMAM

I have at least 40 bottles in a $200 GE Wine Fridge, kept at 53'F, and it's probably worth stating, all beer needs to be vertical, not horizontal like wine, I had to convert mine, store the beer at the bottom and create a shelf that would replace the horizontal trays, cellaring ales you want 55'F or below, be very careful in the 60+'F range as yeast can continue to work more aggressively and can possibly cause more off flavors than at lower temps

Agreed with this. Their beers are solid, but nothing you can't find at any other decent brewery. Also a fan of Mad Fox. For production breweries in the metro area, I think DC Brau has the best lineup - their IPA, Pale, Porter, and seasonals have all been pretty great imo. There are a few other little guys around, and more set to pop up soon.2/4/2012 6:28:12 PM |

If you ever go to Mad Fox and are a craft beer lover, always ask if they have any beers that aren't on the menu. Last year when I went, they had two, one was called Oaked Slobberknocker and it was an Oak-Aged Barleywine that was off the charts. Bill said he kept it off the menu to keep people that don't know anything about beer ordering it because of the name and then not finishing it because it was too strong... I thought that was pretty smart.

Had some Sexual Chocolate tonight and it was great.
The Founders All Day IPA was definitely good, and very drinkable, but it isn't something I would buy often. If I'm going to be drinking a ton of something, then I'm just going to get cheap beer. If I want an IPA, then I generally want something a bit stronger than this. For those that are opposed to drinking cheap beer, this is a great option for a session beer. 2/8/2012 7:24:31 PM |
