I am considering getting onew of these things. But I need two questions answered by I think about it any further.

1. Which is the best remote desktop app: Wyse or Jump Desktop?

2. WHen is the iPad 3 expected, and are there any good Windows 7 tablets available?

1: I use Logmein and it works great. Never tried the other 2.

2: IPad 3 should be out around March 2012. Tablets right now are pretty much limited to iPad or Android. There's win7 tabs available but they're basically a regular laptop with a touchscreen. Once Win8 comes out we should see some really competitive tablets. The recent preview has me already planning on swapping camps once they are available.

I use splashtop. Not sure if it will work for your purpose. I pretty much use it to stream espn3 to my iPad while I'm in the living room.

Contemplating getting the lady an ipad for her bday. Is it common to get the ipad without the 3g/plan? Looking to lessen my cost on this expensive present.

Also trying to figure out if she'll be disappointed if I just get her a really nice Nook?

A lot of people go Wifi only....I bought a Wifi + 3G, and have only used 3G on a trip once. So basically, I could have saved some cash and bought a Wifi one, but I think I just like having the peace of mind knowing I can activate 3G if I need it.

I have a WiFi only model and have never really wished I had gotten 3G. Unlike the iPhone, most of the places I use my iPad have WiFi.

3G is a waste of money on anything. Wifi is almost always available. Even when its not there is only a short period of time before you get back within range.

Nice false blanket statement there. I actually get quite a bit of use out of mine. Some of us don't live in Raleigh or another large city and don't have a Starbucks putting out wifi every block. I travel quite a bit to small towns and in the sticks where wifi is rare. Hell, using it with work, I've been amazed at the number of customers putting $30-40k in a room addition that have no broadband, let alone wifi. It's also nice if I want to stay away from insecure public wifi. Just being able to pull up a forgotten CAD or Sketchup model has helped me close a few deals.

For MANY people, it's unnecessary but there's a bunch of us that find it really useful. You really have to look at your situation and figure out what your likely use case is. Luckily, if you choose wrong, it's not difficult to sell or trade for the right one. That's what I did with both the iPad 1 and iPad 2. I bought a 3G iPad 1 and didn't use it so traded for wifi, bought wifi iPad 2 and found several situations where I needed or wanted to do something and couldn't find an open wifi signal (my usage grew quite a bit between devices).

it's all about your use case, but if i had to guess, i'd say most people are in this camp. it helps that my iPad 1 was free (dumb luck that i won it), but i've thoroughly enjoyed the thing. there have been very few times where i really wanted 3G. that said, if i had 3G (or AT&T would stop being dicks and let me tether my iPhone to use the data i'm already paying for without yet another data plan) i'd probably use it quite often. i wouldn't use it enough to justify an extra data plan.

Installed iOS5, but it deleted all my apps.

Oh hey, a "Purchased" tab on the App Store. I can get them all back easily.

Oh wait, there's no "re-install all". So I have to go to each one individually and recreate all the folders I have.

Thus concludes my one attempt to use the iPad for anything other than watching videos on airplanes for the month.

Does anyone know why Apple crippled audiobooks on the iPad with iOS 5?

Individual files don't progress anymore and they got rid of the speed options.

You don't have to use it again. The last time you have to use it is to install 5.0. That includes using it to restore your apps after you upgrade. After that you can restore from an iCloud backup (which will download all your installed apps at once)

is it possible to edit documents in google docs on an iPad? (created on another machine and stored in google docs).

specifically, spreadsheets.

Yes, but last time I edited a spreadsheet on an iPad it was really clunky. Better to just find a laptop and do it there.

Although that's just using Google's mobile interface. There are apps available for the iPad/iPhone that might better interface with Google Docs (like just downloading it and editing locally before reuploading).

So I have a pretty good suspicion that we will be getting an iPad2 from my father-in-law for Christmas. One of the main uses for this will be for my son to play movies, music and games on road trips. Are any of the free DVD to ipad rippers decent (i.e handbrake) or is it worth it to spend $35 for something like Aiseesoft iPad Converter Suite (http://www.aiseesoft.com/ipad-converter-suite.html)

I'm thinking about jailbreaking my iPad -

Of all the programs out there, which is the best to use?

Is there a place I can find what apps are available for free or discounted on the jailbroken platform? There is a really expensive app I want to try out before buying it, and since it's fairly rare I'm not sure if it will be in the jailbreak app. Is there a list of what each offers on the net?

^^ You can get refunds for apps purchased in the iTunes App Store. Buy it, try it, and get a refund if it doesn't fit your needs.

somebody wanna give me a link to basic ipad 2 jailbreak instructions, or basically just a way to be able to watch flash videos?

There is currently no jailbreak for the newest firmware for iPad2.

If you want to watch flash videos, there's a browser called SkyFire that converts them for you so you can watch them on iOS devices.

cool

also is there a "back button"? i know the home button effectively does that well enough most of the time, and within browsers, etc there is a back button in the top left, but is there any type of finger swipe gesture that just takes one step backwards within an app?

also to touch on something earlier, i pretty much agree 3G is a waste...assuming you have a rooted droid to tether off of

To piggyback on TTs post, is there anyway to refresh the window in safari?

And what are some good apps to download?

To TT: no universal way to "go back" in apps. Though apples design recommendations say that should be the upper left button of whatever app.

^the refresh button is on the right of the safari address bar. Tap the status bar (with the time) to jump to the top of the page.

Good apps:

Splashtop
Kayak
Slacker
Sportacular
Infinity blade 1&2

Well I'll be damned, guess I wasn't looking hard enough. Thanks for the app recommendations, I would add Teamviewer to the list, it's basically a free version of splash top. You have to download it on both computers that you're remoting with, but I've been using it on my laptop for a while now and love it. Plus, again, it's free

For you n00bs, here are some things I highly recommend. I am ultra ultra picky about my accessories so you benefit from me trying many different items out over the last 2 years.

Crown iPad bag
http://www.amazon.com/CaseCrown-Vertical-Multi-Pocket-Messenger/dp/B003BLG2B6/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1325051383&sr=8-10

Small, compact, clean (not a lot of stupid shit added to it), and perfect for holding your iPad, charger, and these two things:

Apple Bluetooth Keyboard
http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Wireless-Keyboard-MC184LL-VERSION/dp/B005DLDO4U/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1325051545&sr=1-1

Great for taking notes at meetings, emails, etc. I use the screen on the keyboard for all quick entry stuff, but if I know I'm going to be somewhere for a while I bust this out.

and

Arkon Fold Up Stand
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CKVOOY/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details

once again, good to use when you will be somewhere for a while

This is the stand that I have used for a long time, and it works great, looks schazzy, but I recently lost it (god dammit) and I ALWAYS got shit at the airport with it because it looks just like a switchblade on the xray, so I got the one above now... but still a great stand.
http://www.amazon.com/Cosmos-Durable-Portable-Horizontal-keyboard/dp/B005WQHIDY/ref=sr_1_2?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1325051735&sr=1-2

^ you might as well lug a laptop around if you're going to carry that.

I slide my iPad into my laptop bag. It has a leather case that lets it stand up if needed and also would provide some protection if i drop it (which i have... and shattered the screen... a week after i got it... and apple replaced it for FREEEE).

what do you consider heavy there? I bet all of the above is under 3lbs. And a full size laptop bag probably weighs that alone. Everything there is light as shit. I have the standard iPad case on it, which is ok for standing here and there, but for more heavy duty use I definitely recommend a stand. I use the fuck out of mine at work for meetings, the radio, TWW (haha) so I definitely take a charger with me at all times. So if I am going to do that its better to have a bag than just carrying the iPad by itself and the charger in my pocket?

btw - I dont carry a laptop bag at all. If I did,. then yes I would also put the iPad in there probably, but I just carry my iPad around usually
