But it is about race, no one is making it that way as a scheme.

That's what the graphs I posted are meant to demonstrate. Blacks weren't poorer with less wealth in the 60s because of "natural imbalances" in society, it was because of very brutal and harsh racism. When the civil rights era hit in the 60s, these politicians who argued publicly for the inferiority of the negroes didn't evaporate, they sought other ways to implement their racism. There also is no magical way to instantly correct for a century of wealth accumulation in the white community to the detriment of freed slaves.

If you ignore this reality, it means you're suggesting the black community should have substantially outperformed every other demographic in America by huge margins, whilst working against societal barriers.

We don't always recognize when he have unearened privileges, but when we do recognize this, there is a responsibility to extend this privlege to those that don't have it. The friction comes from, I think, the understanding that sharing a privlege might mean compromise or sacrifice, and this loss of privlege feels like oppression, but this is the "hump" our society needs to get over. We owe it to the black community, that have been in the country for hundreds of years, that have established multiple generations of families, that helped build the country, they aren't an immigrant group that needs to assimilate, they are as native here as anyone can be.

So I had something interesting happen over the weekend. Like many older neighborhoods around Charlotte, we've had a number of builders buy, demolish homes and then split the lot to build 2 homes... sometimes 3.

With the advent of Nextdoor.com, neighbors can discuss issues like this. If any of you are familiar with Nextdoor, it's a slippery slope. I watched a shit storm happen because of personal attacks.

Well just this past weekend, a builder came in and clear cut an entire lot just a few houses down from me. I'm talking about trees that were perfectly healthy- 50+ yr old trees. An older neighbor was really pissed and she posted how greedy builders are wrecking our neighborhood. Like many older folks, when it comes to online communication, her post was a little over the top, but nothing too crazy.

Then some guy went after her with a personal attack. I didn't want her odd comments and his personal attack to derail the real issue, so I sent him a friendly private message introducing myself and welcoming him to Nextdoor (he just signed up).

I was taken back by his response... I'm paraphrasing, but his rhetoric included how "people like her have had privilege her entire life" and "people like her don't like the changes that are occurring today".

That's when I knew he had an agenda. I looked him up online and he's a pretty success black guy, beautiful family, etc. He owns a technology company, so I know (unlike the old neighbor who's not all there) he's got his head on straight and well-versed in technology.

I made sure to keep my tone and message friendly, but this guy had an axe to grind. How can you accuse someone of not accepting change and pulling the white privilege card over a fucking builder clearcutting a lot and cramming 2 homes ?!?!?!?

Then he had the audacity to ask me if I have hardwood floors and cabinets in my house... he implied that cutting down trees was necessary. He also stated he thought it was hypocritical for folks like me to be upset over something trivial as this when there are much bigger problems in Charlotte.

Our online conversation ended by me saying "Sounds like we view things different in life. It's Saturday night. No reason to waste each other's time. Good talk- hope to see you around the neighborhood sometime."

I have to admit, this has bothered me all weekend. Maybe it's because I've been home w/ 2 kids all weekend (wife is outta town). But I really wanted to talk to this guy face to face. I really wanted to hear his thoughts, but I think it's too heated.

With all the shit going on in Charlotte today with Charlotte Uprising and BLM, I feel like we're more divided than ever. I'm one to try and be friendly and speak with black folks when out and about around the neighborhood and town. But since the riots, my perspective has changed. I'm way (I mean way, way) more guarded with black people and I don't like it.

All I hear on TV, radio, online is that blacks need to boycott Charlotte businesses... even though the cop, police chief, and suspect/victim were black. It's like truth serum in the black community.

I have a sibling who adopted a black child and we've had lots of discussions about the divide between blacks and whites. This is the first time I feel like it's us vs them. That's not good. When I watched the riots, I wanted to see those perps arrested and face severe punishment. I feel like I'm becoming my dad- old, white, and pissed off. I try to clear my head, but I can't. When I hear BLM rhetoric, I start to hate. Hate deep inside me. Wishing for death.

This is crazy. My wife told me to stop watching the news. I'm rambling and probably will get scolded ITT. But I had to get this off my chest.

afripino, good point. I guess I'm trying to be welcoming when I see people walking down the street in my neighborhood. Especially when black teens or young adults are walking past my house.

Often I hear how blacks aren't welcomed or even greeted when in "white" neighborhoods... or upper middle class neighborhoods.
