schools like Ravenscroft are especially needed in states like NC - where the public schools are so poor - from what I understand

After I dropped IB my senior year at Myers Park, I took 6 AP classes and most were a fucking joke

I'm not saying schools like Ravenscroft or its equivalents produce nothing but scholars - but I "understand" these schools and why they're there.

That may be the case in some places, but not Raleigh. My dad knew the dean or headmaster or whatever of Ravenscroft back when I was a little kid attending St. Timothy's (over by North Hills Mall). He told my dad that while private schools like Ravenscroft do much more with every dollar in their budget than do public schools (which waste money like it's cool), private schools simply can't even remotely compete with a large public magnet school--the amount of money the government throws at them far eclipses what a school like Ravenscroft could ever hope to raise in tuition. I ended up going to Hunter/Ligon/Enloe.


Some private schools in NC are, sadly, a result of integration. Back when schools were integrated in the south, many parents chose to send their kids to private schools rather than to a public school with black people. I'm not saying that's commonly the case at these schools in 2008--I'm just saying that's where some of these schools are at least partially rooted.

Yeah, I suspect that the educational opportunities at the big public magnet schools I went to exceeded what I would've found in private school, but one thing I will say for St. Tims is that they taught us to read really early...like pre-k. They were also really good about bumping us up a grade level or two in classes where we needed it. I don't think that would've happened in public school, and I think those 2 things gave me a huge head start.

My mom has told me that I could read articles in the newspaper when I was in kindergarten. I don't think that would've happened in most public schools, at least not without a lot of teaching at home.

^^That's the one thing my mom always told me too. I could read at an extremely young age and very well for my age.

It turned into a shitty school around the 9th grade and I left for Cardinal Gibbons.

me either. and i don't think that. i don't usually bring up where i went to school unless asked. i think i got a good education there and i am lucky that i went there but i don't think i'm hot shit and there are definitely some things public school has that private school doesn't. like a wider selection of courses. but yes, there are stuck up people everywhere.

no idea! i'm not from charlotte i don't even know where it is. the only schools i've been to in charlotte are obviously latin, country day, and catholic because we played them in sports. and my friends from ncsu from "charlotte" were actually from weddington and went there.
