Glad I went to that dinner tonight. Heard about 2 jobs that I didn't know about previously, and met a high up who works at another place I applied to work. Maybe there's something to this whole networking thing after all. 5/20/2011 12:25:05 AM |

Just got semi-laid off. They're going on a seniority basis, so the new receptionist got let go and now it's my turn. I haven't done any real engineering work for a couple of weeks because sales have been poor. They're going to give me work on a contract basis, probably only a day a week though. They also gave me a nice recommendation letter to use in the job search.
Blahh. Well at least I got some experience and a good reference. 5/27/2011 11:54:21 AM |

Preface: I am a computer science major. I've had about 3+ years work experience after college. Programming/software/hardware experience. I have also interned and worked in a computer related type job since i was 16. I am now 27.

The job i am applying for is at a private college. They contacted me over the phone about 3 weeks ago. After a simple greeting he instantly wanted to know what my desired salary was. I told him i made 42k at my last job and i was interested in at least 45 to 50. He said ok and we continued our conversation.
I went in for the interview a couple days later. We did not mention salary again at this interview.
3 weeks go by and he calls me again to come in to meet the vice chancellor. I had a great conversation with the vice chancellor. We talked about the job, the college, golfing, etc. During our conversation he mentions that the position opened due to the previous employee (who worked there 5 years) leaving for more money. He brings me back down to meet the guy I've initially met since the first phone call. The vice chancellor walks away and we jump right into the salary.
My previous job i made 42k, 4% match, I had full benefits, and I did not pay for health coverage. They offered me 35k, 7% match, full benefits, but i would have to pay for some of the health coverage for the first year or two.
Needless to say i was highly disappointed he did not listen to me during our first phone conversation. I told them to work on the offer if he could. He said him and the vice chancellor will be meeting more next week and he would possibly call me back with a better figure. They really tried to sell me on the school and all the benefits of the college atmosphere. While I am familiar with the perks, I don't go to work for the perks like free basketball games, 14 holidays off, and such. Time is money and money is why I come to work in the first place.

I'm curious about what I should do seeing as how I'm kinda out of the market right now due to the fact that I live overseas. Currently, I'm teaching and really I'm not doing a whole lot to further my education. There's a possibility that I will be returning to the States next year and attending grad school, but that's all up in the air right now.
Any words of wisdom? 5/30/2011 1:02:40 PM |

^^^ Teaching in China pays shit. Japan and Korea is where you make the $texas in Asia.
^ As someone who has been in that boat since August, I'll tell you it sucks. If you have grad school lined up, then you'll be fine. But as far as getting a job it's going to be tough. Most people didn't want to interview me because it required doing an overseas phone interview. Once I did get back to the States I still had trouble finding people to give me the time of day because either I was viewed as "too experienced" or they didn't see how my experience fit with their posted position. Only reason I've gotten the jobs I have had since returning is by heavy networking.
I have my interview tomorrow. So nervous!

Alright, this week has been the first wholly dedicated to job search shit. I've been setting up for the jobs I want the most (but am probably not going to get) for a while now, but it's a long time horizon between when you start and when you actually get an offer, so in the meantime I'm hitting up placement agencies pretty hard, both here and in the DC area.
Should have started earlier, but the run-up to graduation was pretty intense. And, if I'm going to be totally honest, I like working but HATE HATE HATE looking for work, so that probably made me procrastinate a bit. 6/2/2011 2:05:19 PM |

Christ, apparently my irrational phobia of cold-calling people has not gone away. Just called a placement agency in DC on the advice of a friend who said it was the only way to prove that I'm serious. Got voicemail but my hands are still shaking. Fuck me, this is not pleasant. 6/2/2011 2:52:50 PM |

well had a few phone interviews. One the other day went well with the HR lady. I had another one today with the same company with who would be my manager and that didn't go so well. A lot of "rate yourself 1-10 on ___" and he didn't seem to happy... even at the start before i answered anything. A little disappointed and down on this one as this company sounded great to work for.
Going to keep hunting. 6/7/2011 11:22:52 AM |

Got an offer this morning from a company, they want me to give them a reply by end of the day tomorrow.
Have a final interview scheduled with another company Thursday that will most likely result in another offer.
I have no idea how to play this. Offer from Company #1 is not as high as what I could expect from Company #2 (about 10k difference). I don't have a preference in terms of which place i work, they're both neck and neck on that. Do I just ask company #1 to split the difference since it's such a short decision timeframe? 6/7/2011 12:15:13 PM |

I was only overseas for about 2 months, but what I did was invest in a paid Skype account where it gave me a local number to use. I picked a Raleigh number, and I was able to call through my account on the computer for like 7 cents a minute or something. If I wanted to use my phone, I could use my remote access number (set in Belgium) to call my Skype account and call US numbers for cheap.
I did a phone interview that later got me sent back to the States early that was actually kinda screwy...my computer account didn't pick up the call and it went straight to my cell phone, but still for the company it was as simple as calling a 919 number.
What I spent a lot of time was researching companies and eventually found the one where I work at now. I called the office using Skype and got an email address to send my resume. I later got an interview when I was back in the States already.
Don't let the "international call" stop you, there are alternatives to let you job hunt while you are overseas. I think Skype isn't even the best option, but that's for another thread. The real matter is dealing with trying to find a job, but I would advise initializing contact now, and calling/applying hard when you're ~1-2 months from being back so that you're actually in a position to apply for open or soon to be open positions.6/7/2011 1:14:02 PM |

I could see it being easier from western Europe but from Asia the time zone was so massively different it really took time to get a call time that worked for people. And I often found that while people were interested in me, they often had someone physically in North Carolina they'd go with instead. And I can't really fault them for that. 6/7/2011 2:19:09 PM |
