Quote :
"That is a very good, athletic team, one with talent in the backcourt, bodies in the frontcourt and an offensive centerpiece in Leslie, who in 2011-12 proved one of the nation's most adept mid-post and elbow scorers. His development should continue in 2012, and even for unbiased observers, it should be thrilling to watch.

Though not as thrilling as it will be to NC State fans, of course. The Wolfpack are a top-10 team to start the season, not to mention a worthy favorite to win the ACC. North Carolina lost Kendall Marshall, Harrison Barnes, Tyler Zeller and John Henson; Duke lost its most talented player in Austin Rivers and looks likely to struggle on the defensive end again this season. Both teams have the talent to compete again for the top spot in the ACC, to be sure, but would you take either of their lineups over NC State's? I wouldn't.

Which is why this is such a thrilling time to be a Wolfpack fan. NC State fans are among the nation's most dedicated and hungry for success. They've never accepted the role of third fiddle willingly, but for much of the past decade, as Herb Sendek decamped for Arizona State and Lowe fell astoundingly flat as his replacement, they've had to swallow an utter lack of success on a year-in, year-out basis. Now, with Gottfried reloading and Leslie returning, they may just be the favorite to win the ACC.

It's been a long time since we could say that. Relish it, Wolfpack fans. It appears, after so much misery, your time has finally come."

dammit...i don't wanna wait until november for basketball.

Good article:
Quote :
"So C.J. Leslie is coming back to N.C. State and he’s bringing a whoooole lot of expectations – both individual and team-related – with him.

Here are a few quick thoughts in the immediate aftermath of Leslie’s decision.
Did Leslie Make The Right Decision?

I think so. While I tend to agree w/ my fellow ACC scribe Bret Strelow that some team would have snagged drafted Leslie late in the first round, that’s by no means a guarantee. And if you don’t have the guarantee of, well, guaranteed money, then the general rule of thumb is that you don’t put your name in the draft while you still have eligible.

Plus, the reason why I think a team drafting below 25 would take a shot at Leslie in the 2012 NBA Draft would still hold true in 2013: He’s a freak athlete. That’s not going to change with another season of college basketball under his belt. So the floor for Leslie’s draft stock is already set – at worst he’ll be a late-first, early-second round pick in the NBA draft, even if he doesn’t have a breakout junior season at State.

Ahh, but if Leslie does build off his late-season pay from 2011-12 and blossom into a true star in 2012-13? Well then his draft stock should zoom up. If he can shake the inconsistency – probably the biggest question mark about Leslie –, then Leslie certainly has lottery pick potential in the 2013 NBA Draft.

“If he can grow up more as a man, I think he improves his draft stock, a scout told Strelow.

One drawback – that scout also described Leslie as a “tweener,” not quite a power forward and not quite a small forward. The thinking then would be that Leslie needs to show the ability to play further away from the basket. However, he showed this past season that he’s most dangerous operating in the paint. It’ll be interesting to see how Mark Gottfried balances the need to let his star showcase his game with the need to have his star playing in the
C.J. Was Very Calvin With This Decision

As Leslie kept stringing together strong performances in the second half of the 2011-12 season, I kept seeing tweets from N.C. State fans that all went essentially like this:

“I’m psyched C.J.’s finally tapping into his potential … just stinks that this means we’re going to lose him after this season.”

The widely held assumption was that Leslie was a guy itching to go pro and would do so even if his draft prospects weren’t that great. Instead, Leslie took his time, gathered information and concluded that he could do better for himself and his family if he went the patient route and came back for another season of college basketball.

If Leslie takes that sort of level-headed approach to his on-court performances next season, expect big results – both for him and for the Wolfpack.

Speaking of the team outlook …
What This Could Mean For State: Best Case

In the positive version of Leslie’s return to the Wolfpack, he becomes the most dominant big man in the ACC, as well as one-half of the ACC’s best one-two combo, along with rising junior point guard Lorenzo Brown. He also serves as a mentor and role model for the Wolfpack’s talented freshmen, showing that a) it sometimes takes a while for big-time talents to make an impact in college and b) there’s still something to be gained by sticking around the college game for a while.

It’s a scenario that has to quicken the pulse of every N.C. State fan: Leslie dominating on the boards alongside Richard Howell; Leslie out-quicking bigger defenders while jumping over and shooting over smaller opponents. Leslie attracting so much attention from defenses that Scott Wood gets plenty of open looks, Howell gets plenty of weakside offensive rebounds and freshman Rodney Purvis has plenty of open lanes that he can use to attack the basket.

If something like that comes to fruition then yes, N.C. State would be the best team in the Triangle and, by extension, the best team in the ACC and one of the best in the nation.
What This Could Mean For State: Worst Case

C.J. Leslie is not J.J. Hickson. His supporting case is not like the 2008 one that included Brandon Costner and Ben McCauley. And most importantly, Mark Gottfried is not Sidney Lowe. So I’m not buying into attempts to draw a parallel between the 2007-08 disaster and the 2012-13 Wolfpack.

Still …

I already noted that Leslie may be tempted to showcase more perimeter skills in an attempt to shed the “tweener” label. If so, will this throw off the offensive blueprint that Gottfried wants to use?

Also, Purvis is going to want the ball in his hands so he can attack the basket. T.J. Warren is going to want the ball in his hands so he can showcase his wide array of offensive skills. Brown is going to want – and need – the ball in his hands so he can run the show. Wood and Howell are going to want their chances to score as well.

With only one ball to go around, it’s possible that State could suffer from having too many offensive options next season. And if that happens, it’s possible that Leslie could revert to the sulky ways of his freshman season.

———————-

Possible yes, but by no means a certainty.

First, at his Wednesday press conference, Leslie sounded all the right notes about being a leader next season. And his close relationship with Rodney Purvis - something Leslie said played a role in his decision to return - should help smooth over any potential friction between the incoming talents and the established players on State’s roster.

Also, don’t underestimate the credibility that Gottfried has already built up after one season at N.C. State. He connected with Leslie, got the talented forward to accept his coaching and great things happened for Leslie along the way.

If that’s the case again in 2012-13 expect an outcome closer to the best case scenario. Next season the Wolfpack will go as Leslie goes, and right now his career arc is clearly on the upswing"

We are not Duke. You can't get a degree from NC State from only 90 hours of classes.

I sure hope the team can come together and not have any of those "how did we lose that game" type games...

There were quite a few games we lost this year that we should have totally won.

exactly, you can easily get over 120 hours in that time frame, at the very least be very close so he'd only have 2-3 classes left

This is literally the first good thing to ever happen to this basketball program.

Today was one of those days where the entire wolfweb was sitting around with two tabs and Pandora open. One tab for refreshing CJL/Amile status updates, one tab for searching Sears.com for bedpillows and throws, and Pandora playing the Natalie Imbruglia station.

They were this close to leaving work early and going out drinking ready to Paint the Town Red after the CJ Leslie news, but then their wife sent them a text, "Sex?"

even if he doesn't win ACC player of the year or anything, a chance to be the ACC favorite(regardless of who's missing) is a chance at revenge that we dont normally get with the shitty conference realignment schedule
