the canes are reminding me of state right now

play well enough to have the playoff slot locked up early, then start looking terrible

hope the canes aren't knocked out early, but they do not show signs of being ready for the playoffs right now

it is just a bullshit call, its fine, play the odds, and when the canes lose before the cup finals come back and boast, boast, boast

fact is, you are looking back on that team in a good light because of their acomplishments, and the odds of this team making the finals (to match that team) are not that great....so play the odds, and hedge your bets, but this team is FAR better than that team ever was!

at least this team is still young, which means they have the potential to be even better next year.

"50 SOG though, that is savage!"

You can take a hundred shots at the goalie's crest and none of them will be good. Quality, not quantity.

As far as what boobs is saying, I agree and disagree. Right now, the team is not playing very well in general, and with Hedican and Wallin out the defense is weak, no matter how well Commodore, Babchuk, or whoever else is playing.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I think the back end, when healthy, is solid enough to compete.

The big problem I have right now is the defensive responsibility of the forwards. Aside from the usual suspects who are always fine defensively, we've got some guys who are in la-la land, especially Staal and Whitney. Yikes.

I'll agree to a point that the 2002 team was VERY well built for the grind of the playoffs. A nice mix of physical and positional defenders (it didn't hurt that Tanabe was shelved), interchangeable quality goaltenders, and forward lines that were almost all defensively responsible AND were built for specific purposes: top line for raw scoring, BBC line for grind-style scoring, third line grind/shutdown, and fourth line energy with two top-shelf penalty killers.

This year's team has worked very well on the principle of an 11-7 squad mix, but we haven't had that for weeks, and the fatigue is showing in the D-men. There also isn't a sense of unity or purpose in the lines, not because the combinations are bad but because we've got "units" made of interchangeable parts instead of players all dedicated to the same style.

If the team gets out of this funk and the D gets healthy, I think the team will be okay, but I absolutely do NOT want to see Atlanta in the first round. Funk or no funk, that would scare the hell out of me.

There's no doubt that there is more talent on this year's team than 2002, and on the whole they play very well together, but there's also no denying the strategic balance of the 2002 team in regards to the needs of the playoff format/schedule/referreeing.

50 SOG means shit, sometimes when you get frustrated on the ice, your coach, or your instinct gets you to just fire it up at the net regardless if its an easy save in the hopes of getting a funny bounce

I was just commenting on a beefy stat line, nothing more, nothing less

50 shots on goal is a high number....all I was saying

no comment on quality of the shots!

^ I completely agree, 50 is a high number of shots, the timing was off offensivly last night there were guys who held too long, (Stillman, Whitney) and guys that shot it as soon as they got it ( Williams, K Adams, and sometimes Staal). Not to mention the posts we hit and the two that i thought were goals but were waived off. Not to take anything from brent Johnson because he played an above average game when we didn't shoot at his chest, it would be interesting to see the game if that first Staal chance actually trickled in the net.

stats will never do Luongo justice, but he is the best goalie in the league, nothing against brodeur but a solid trap infront of you never hurts

^^^ Tell that to all of the teams in recent years that have gone into the playoffs with a better regular season record than the Canes have this year and been swept out in round 1. I'm not saying that I think it's going to happen, but all it takes is a hot goalie or a slow start to send a top seed packing before they even know what hit them.

[Edited on March 31, 2006 at 5:49 PM. Reason : I guess by "all of the teams" I mean the Red Wings being swept by the Ducks]

how much are canes tickets with the student discount at the gate?

Do the games typically sell out?

Student IDs get you $5 off upper level tickets, and $20 off lower level. The discount can only be used if you buy a ticket the day of the game, and it doesn't apply to the $10.29 tickets. There are only 4 home games before the playoffs, so for planning purposes I would go ahead and assume those are going to sellout.

With that said, 2-1 Canes. The Wrecchin Ball gets one.

Boarded Brett Hedican big time. Hedican was able to leave the ice under his own power.

This game didnt really suck that much
yeah we lost but you have to understand that:
A we played last night and the thrashers are fresh (one reason we got beat alot on d)
B they HAVE to win to even come close to making the playoffs, we dont need to win any
C Also we are missing some key players with Minor injuries (good b/c they will play in postseason)

Also the new ppl are finally getting in the grove with the other players
so all in all we have had alot of changes After the olympic break and hopefully it will all come
together in the post season
