For all we know he could be, Lee Fowler hasn't shared his list of candidates with anyone.

Steve Lavin is apparently still on the list...although I think he's a backup right now.

Backup to who is the question of the day...

well if lavin is the backup, then that means there's no way whitt is in play, unless fowler is just insane.

hopefully lavin is the backup to montgomery.

He might not be the only backup though...but he is one.

I honestly couldn't see him turning us down either. Dude has to be desperate for a job.

I think Lavin is just waiting for the "right job".

He's got it made as a commentator, and it's tough to go from UCLA to say... UNC-W or somewhere similar.

I have a feeling it'll be Belein or Kruger.

[Edited on April 20, 2006 at 11:08 PM. Reason : Whitt is sounding more like a possibility every day, though]

No...he's probably looking for the best available job. He won't get a better job offer than us until he coaches a mid-major or crappy team in a big conference.

Lavin is damaged goods right now...he would bust a nut if we "officially" offered him the job. If not us, his next job is looking like a Clemson-like team or a mid-major. No way he would turn us down. I think it comes down to whether or not we'll "settle" for him.

And I will punch a fucking a baby if we hire Belein.

Lavin is strictly West Coast though... his parents and his own family have always lived in Cali.

Just to note, he was the 5th youngest head coach in Div 1 history at 32. He also did go to the Sweet 16 in 5 of his 6 years at UCLA (the last being the only one when they went 10-19).

^^I don't think him being a "West Coast" guy will keep him in Cali.

And I'm not saying I don't like him that much either. I think he was a little over his head in UCLA...and hopefully if we hire him, he will have learned him from that. I'm not down on Lavin, but I think we could do a little better. But he does have potential.

"(1) Rick Barnes still in play.
Is this one getting old? Of course, we wanted to believe this when we heard a few times through the week. It made some sense when you consider that:

*

(a) Barnes hasn’t reportedly signed his new contract at UT
*

(b) Texas’ annual basketball awards dinner was earlier this week (and there were rumors that Rick wanted to still be his kids coach on that night,
*

(c) Pack Pride reported yesterday that the name that they had heard the most about in the last 24 hours was Barnes.
*

(d) People turned their attention to John Calipari’s candidacy on the weekend that it was reported (by Caulton Tudor on Friday) that Barnes had not yet said no to NC State. It was reported that Barnes was going to sign his new contract in Austin, but Wolfpackers dropped the focus on Barnes after the contract announcement and while State was obviously pursuing Calipari.

As ‘dramatic’ as this alternative may be (dovetailing nicely with Dave Glenn’s blog entry yesterday), it may not be necessarily plausible. The later in the week that we get from Monday night’s Texas Basketball Banquet, the less likely the Barnes scenario has legs."

I don't understand why the search is taking so long. I mean how long do coaching searches usually take? I can understand fowler taking the first week to throw all our resources at the big name coaches but why can't he persue the others simultaneously and get a signature by now. I mean I want the best coach possible but it will really hurt if the search is going to take over 3 weeks and all we get is a B list coach.

Also I thought the word was that the position had been filled. What happened to that?

ok who do you like out of these then?

lavin, beilein, whitt?

i know you don't like beilein because you hated herb. that leaves lavin and whitt. assuming there are no unknown candidates, are you SERIOUSLY telling me you'd rather have whitt than lavin?

someone who coaches fordham to a losing record over someone that went to 5 sweet sixteens in 7years?

who has poor judgement now?

Dave Glenn says that Beilein's buyout is $3 million, so there's another reason you can scratch him off the list.

Which I guess leaves Lavin and Whitt. Fuck.

^^^I say we hire Lavin just so we can see that hot piece of ass at games from now on.

And buyouts really are of no concern right now. If Fowler wants Belein or Kruger, he'll pay the buyout. We really aren't any position right now to go to a fallback choice because of a buyout.

I have been reading the threads but I cannot find what happened to Gregg Marshall from Winthrop? Is he out of the picture? Did he also play us for a raise? Sorry if it has been posted elsewhere. Be gentle.

I don't think we've had too much contact with Marshall.

He can't play us for a raise unless we offer him the job (Like Calipari or Barnes).

I don't expect it to be Marshall. I said months ago I'd love to give him a shot, but apparently Fowler isn't considering it becuase it would be such a huge step up. If we offered him the job, he'd take it.

1) Even if we payed him $500,000 per year (next to nothing), it'd still be about 4 times what he makes
2) Winthrop couldn't dream of matching us money-wise... nor would they try
