the 60GB can play ps2 games, but as far as i understand, the 80gb and 40gb have the same internals when it comes to backwards compatibility

No, not at all. The 60GB has a full PS2 inside of it and can play 99% of PS2 games. The 80GB has half a PS2 inside of it and does a mix of hardware/software emulation to run PS2 games. As of the latest firmware update, its up to around 90% backwards compatibility. The 40GB has no PS2 hardware inside of it and can't play any PS2 games. All of them can play PS1 games.

FWIW - Assassin's Creed = winner

seriously, the game is beautiful, huge, and a lot of fun. probably a bigger game area than GTA San Andreas

also got the CE of Stranglehold...liked the demo enough, plus it comes with the best available copy of Hard Boiled out there...that movie alone is probably worth 20-30 bucks to me

^^ my friend is having the same problem....what kind of receiver do you have?

p.s. uncharted drake's fortune is well worth the money....I haven't seen production value in a game like that in a long time...if you've read any reviews that say it's on the shorter side, that's about right (10-12 hours on medium difficulty), but the pacing never lets up, and it ends up being just about perfect (they didn't insert any bs to try to add game time)...You could basically beat the game in a weekend without much problem (I can't say as to the length of the game on hard and extremely hard difficulties though

The game really makes you feel like you're playing straight through a movie, which was a lot of fun

...my only gripes (which are pretty much in line with what some of the reviews noted) are that the mercenaries you fight get pretty annoying after a little while, but the way the story is structured, that gets fixed right at the perfect point (I won't give any details since that has to do with the storyline)

The fighting system is a lot of fun, and it really makes you manage your ammo, as well as choosing good cover (since most everything you hide behind can get destroyed)

...I also wish some of the puzzles had been a little bit more difficult (and the same with sections of the game where you have to climb), they're all sort of fun, but none are brain busters, and none compare to the ones you're used to if you've played stuff like God of War II (and with that, there's less satisfaction when you complete them)

But overall, great game...I'm about to play through it again, as there's unlockable stuff that gives incentive to play through multiple times

I currently use a yamaha receiver, but am not using hdmi. I use components. I was looking at buying a new receiver thinking that that would end the buzzing/static noises. If this works, I owe you a beer. Thanks again.

Tearing has nothing to do with the firmware of the platform and everything to do with the development of the game.

could be, but I'd have to disagree with your blanket statement.... you see nvidia release updated drivers after a big new game comes out and doesn't run properly on their hardware. same could happen with ps3 if they'd developed assassin's creed for pre-2.00 firmware and then something unexpected changed with the big firmware drop

Stein, you got me! Good to see you're keeping up with all this, even though you don't own a PS3. Keep up the good work!


The DS3 is nice. It's heavier, which is nice I guess. The battery surprisingly seems to last just as long as the regular old sixaxis. The rumble seems pretty much the same as DS2. It might be in my mind, but the sticks and L2/R2 triggers feel a tad bit tighter.

Anyone know what we're getting with today's PSN update?
