the funny thing is, all those points you're putting up with 37 regular clients can be made with 4 SMP clients.... it's sad really.

Support Cancer Research and the NCSU Wolfpack With Your Computer's Spare Time!

What Is It?
Essentially the http://folding.stanford.edu/ uses your unused CPU cycles to model how proteins fold in the human body. The misfolding of proteins is often involved in well known diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson’s disease. Because this endeavor requires massive amounts of computing power, their project uses spare CPU time on computers that would otherwise sit idle in homes and businesses across the world. Here at North Carolina State University, we have formed this team in order to donate our spare CPU time to help this important endeavor.

The North Carolina State University (http://ncsufolding.com) Folding@Home Team (Team # 59) was one of the first teams to join the Folding@Home project, and was the very first University-based team to join. We are currently ranked in the top 100 in the world and are ramping up production in an effort to make it into the Top 50. We are all dedicated to doing our part to help end some of these terrible diseases, and we would appreciate the company of anyone who would like to help.

All it takes is the installation of a small piece of software and your computer will start completing Work Units for the project and the team. The Folding@Home process runs at the lowest possible priority so you can run it 24X7 without slowing down your computer or interfering with your everyday computing tasks. If you have a Sony PS3 Game Console you can also run Folding@Home (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-PS3) on it with great results.

How Can I Help?

Go to http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download,download and install the software. Our Team Number is 59.

Click here - http://www.ncsufolding.com/?page_id=4 for more detailed installation instructions.

Windows Computers:
We recommend using the "text-only console” client for most windows computers. If you have a dual/quad/etc core processor, be sure to install and run the SMP client to get you and the team <strong>far more points</strong> than the standard console client (but sometimes it has problems starting as a service, so you might have to restart the client manually or automatically via startup folder when your computer restarts). In general, its best to stay away from the graphical clients. If you have a Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading, its best to turn off Hyperthreading in the BIOS if you know how. Feel free to post in this thread with any questions.

Mac and Linux Computers:
There are both "text-only" consoles and SMP clients for Linux and Macintosh computers too! If you have a dual/quad/etc core processor be sure to run the SMP client as you'll get far more points than the text-only client. But the text-only clients also help out too if you only have single-core processors.

PS3:
PS3s currently provide over 60% of the processing power in the Folding@home network and are capable of producing many points for the team. If you have PS3 system version 1.6 or later, you will see a Folding@Home icon in the Network column of the XMB (PS3 Networking menu). Just click on the icon and that's it. If you don't have 1.6 or later, perform a system upgrade. Make sure to use Team #59!

The more computers and PS3s you run the clients on, the more points your username and the NCSU team earns! Install as many clients as you can and watch your username/team progress at the stats page - http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=59

its pretty fun watching your points jump up even in the team rank.

my pc is running the smp client, and then my backup computer is running the regular. it takes like 3 or 4 days to complete a work unit. my smp computer can finish one in about 1.2 days or less.

i wish i had more. but, you make do with what you've got. 37 pc's sitting around doing jack shit, might as well fold even if the best one of them is a lowly p4

yeah, but at what cost really, i mean 37 x 150W = 5.5kW of electricity, 4 x 200W = 800W

it adds up, not to mention the heat being released, then you're paying another 6-7x the cost of air conditioning to cool the units

unless of course it's at work

If that's 5.5kW continuous, that's like $0.44/hr in electricity or $10/day

but as long as he isn't paying for it, who cares?

you also have to consider it's 18,700 BTU's of cooling required as well, that's some expensive setup

^^Watts in direct proportion to BTU's, the ratio of power is 7:1, thus the amount of BTU's would be 7:1 as well... but you get the idea, it's $texas

what client did you install? what OS? can you paste in the important part of your log file?

sometimes it takes like 15 minutes or more to find a WU to download. i bet if you give it some time it will eventually find some work to do

GG man, that will be a huge help.

To check your contribution to the team check the stats page: http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=59

Do you already have a username or did you just enter one? If its a new username then your name won't show up until you submit your first work unit. If you want to see how many points you're producing per machine you can install http://fahmon.net/ . You can run it individually on each client machine or just run it on one computer and monitor multiple clients over the network.

I think it must be a new name... I thought I had contributed before at some point but my name isn't on the list so either I didn't or it's been too long since I last did... It's 12% done with a job already so it's movin

with 2 SMP client you should be able to get 2k-3k+ PPD depending on what processors you're running them on (with GHz and L2 cache size being important stats)

That status code is normally a permissions issue.

You need to run the install.bat file (found in the install folder) and supply it with a windows account username and password (password can't be blank)...the account must have admin access.

Did you set it to use IE settings? You need to always choose no. Setting it to yes creates problems (like the one above). Create a shortcut to the fah.exe executable, right click it, go to properties, and add the flag -configonly to the target. run that shortcut to change the settings to the ones below.

^sweet

those SMP client produce sooo many points. the more of them we install/run the faster we'll shoot up in the rankings. just look at our points so far today. we've already reported 35k points and we're only 1/2 way through the day. that because we had a bunch of SMP work units turned in this morning.

the only thing we have to watch out for is when they finally move to the V6 SMP client I bet all the beta SMP clients we're running now will expire. so we'll have to upgrade all the SMP clients as soon as the v6 is released or the beta clients will expire and our production will fall off the chart.

Ok, it seems to be working now. I ran the install.bat and did everything the same as the first time, but now it's working. Time to install this on my roommates computer

I'll have 2 running the SMP client and 1 running the normal client under my name.

Great, welcome to the team!

Try to run the SMP client as a service by following the instructions on the last pagemessage_topic.aspx?topic=118820&page=47

^^^I've actually been on the team it's just been a while since I had this running.

I can't really tell if my SMP clients are working right or not. I'm at 16% on both with 0% cpu usage and no FahCore_a1.exe processes (where there used to be 4 on each). No one has been on either computer all day. Mine last updated at 06:27:33 (which is about 8 hours after I started it). I'm guessing that is GMT. Based on the spacing of the other updates, it should have completed another 5000 steps (out of 500,000) about 13 minutes ago. I'd like to make sure this is running right before I leave town for a week.

thats the biggest indicator that nothing is happening. if you're CPU isn't at 100%, something is not working right.

Are you running the SMP client as a service? If not look on the last couple pages for instructions.

Either way you need to restart your SMP client(s) and make sure they're consuming 100% of the CPU usage

I'm gonna get a PS3 going on this and a few other computers later today... I think I have close to 10 I can get going, especially over the holidays while nobody is using them.

I was going to wait for it to finish the first WU (because I wasn't sure if it would resume) before I did that but I went ahead and just did it now to both computers. I hope it works because I won't be around in 8 hours to check on it.

^ well once you set it to run as a service and reset the computer (so that the service can start) as long as the CPU is running 100% it should be fine.

^^ badass. with that many machines folding you should be in the top 3 producers on the team within a week or less!

dont know if its working or not but i am getting "trying to unzip core fahcore_a1.exe
-couldnt open file fahcore_a1.exe
+error: could not extract core
+ core download error (#6), waiting before retry..."

i swear they need to make this shit more user friendly...the only one i can regularly get to work easily is the graphical client
