no i never edit any of my photos, not that i don't want to, i just never have time.

i just happen to be at the right place at the right time, i take lots of photos to get the right one, take a lot of time setting up the shot composition wise.

a lot of times i see a great photo opportunity, but i always check to see if another angle or zoom or setting will make the composition better.

it's not all about using macro setting, then taking random pictures of your couch, while the depth of field is nice, doesn't make it a great photo, or even a nice photo.

and the photos were taken with a Sony DSC-H5 which isn't a SLR, it's technically an advanced point-and-shoot, it allows me to customize the settings i need while giving me the flexibility of having a smaller camera at a fraction of the cost.

sooner or later though i imagine i'll upgrade. i'm an architect by profession, and a side hobby is photography

Likewise. I kept bumping up against the limitations of my canon S3IS, so I upgraded, but I suspect I'm going to hang onto and keep using it.

I have $1,000 to spend on a digital SLR. You guys know what to get, I don't.

I know I want exchangeable lenses, complete control over all aspects (f-stop, iso, blah blah blah), and 2.5 inch LCD.


Any experts with some good advice?

^ There is plenty of information on the web and your local library on how to use them. Or find a group that can help you out and share/trade equipment. That helped me out on deciding on lens.

^^ Test some out...I would say to get either a Canon or Nikon if you can. You don't have to go top of the line in the body but a good lens with a small f-stop will help in taking pictures. I'd recommend a Canon 20D or 30D. The 30D is practically the same as the 20D but has a bigger LCD screen. Not a huge deal but it's your personal preference. You could also get the Rebel XTi but I personally don't like the smaller body and the shutter speed.

I haven't played around with the Nikon's too much but my friends D80, I think that's his model might be the lower one though, is really nice. I'm just a fan of Canon for some time and probably won't change.

It's up to you. Do your research since it's a fairly large investment. Ebay is a good place to find stuff too if you want to save some money.

^ I have played with the 30D a little bit and love it. I would want to throw in at least a 200 or 300mm zoom lens but that's going to cut me down a bunch. Maybe I can squeeze out another $300 or so. I am trying to find out if there is a photography class here at State but I can't seem to find one. Thanks for the advice!

unless you are a skilled photographer i would suggest getting a rebel XTI or something along the lines of a Nikon D40 or D50

i had a D50 until my apt. got robbed. my 3 lenses and my $100 bag got taken too

but my hands are fairly big and the canon xti just was a little too small and the Nikon D50 fit my hands better. Both are great cameras

its a big investment and you can always upgrade once you have established your love of photography. some people buy a nice camera [my dad] and use it as a point & shoot or dont use it all unless its the holidays.

just make sure you are getting what you want for the money you are going to spen

The first thing I noticed about my D50 was how BIG it was in my hands. Until I wrapped my hand around it like I was shooting, I had my doubts as to whether or not I could use it. I don't even notice the size now, but it's like breaking out a black man's cock at first.

^yes, those goats were at about 12,500-13,000ft.

as far as the nascar picture i have a lot more of those, i got it to look right about 1 out of every 6-10 shots, i just followed the car with my camera, allowing the track to blur and the car to stay in focus. as for the lights, that's how a night race looks in nascar, they have staggered lights on the inside of the track facing out at a 45' angle as to not blind the drivers

picked up a D40 kit over the weekend w/ a 55-200 nikkor along with the kit lens and a nice bag.

the D40 has some nice features the D50 didnt have and its a lot smaller and lighter
still getting used to it / havent really taken out shooting yet. i have shot some on it but not too much

better perspective, the one of just the barn is too centered and nothing of notable interest surrounding it, seems overcast so using a polarized or contrast filter may have helped, the depth of field may not have been deep enough... i think both pictures could have been taken from a different spot and have been more interesting. the content itself is kinda 'eh' and on an overcast day it makes it hard to get the rich saturation and contrast needed to make the red barn stand out amongst those leaves... just imho

i have no idea about #3, it's not really that interesting

I did what I could with the lens I have (still only have a 70-300; I was out as far as I could). Unfortunately, that barn and those fences are all that's at the park, save for the trail, lake, and forest.

I don't care about #3. I was surprised to get anything interesting from that; wasn't asking for feedback.

it actually makes the barn stand out less because you made the trees stand out more. The whole picture is kind of flat. It's also a bit blurry.

Right, not getting any money for it, and supposedly they aren't either. I should have mentioned that this photo has already appeared in Lightworld Magazine in Istanbul, Turkey. They sent me a copy of the issue, which was cool. It also had the English translations of the articles in the back.

NO self-respecting photographer would take that offer. They're just milking you for a free photograph. "Publicity" is not payment. When you do this, you actually hurt photographers that depend on selling their photographs to make a living.

Even if the schmap is free, the people who design it don't design it for free. They get a paycheck. Their boss gets a paycheck. (probably from advertising revenue) You should get a paycheck too.

im still torn between nikon d40x and canon xti

i've gone and tested both - neither really feels a whole lot better than the other in hand. the only major differences (appearance wise) are that the canon has a few more buttons on the back to manipulate settings without going into the menu.

i'm leaning towards the nikon - also the 50mm 1.8 lens - anyone have a good reason one way or another, or are these pretty much the same camera with a different brand name?

also - i'm looking for a good dlsr photography forum on the web and cant seem to find one - any recs?
