I'm having a lot of anxiety about next spring already.... I found out we don't get a spring break so now I'm thinking what the hell am I going to be able to do over the few random weekends I can go back to Raleigh between December and May? And I only have a week between graduation and the wedding

That's what Deanna said but I feel so bad doling out "duties"... Especially because they would probably be pretty detailed seeing as I'm out of state and literally won't be able to be there for some important stuff I don't want anyone to feel used ya know
I think my plan now is just to get as much done as possible by December... but I know that's a pretty lofty goal...

I'm planning a wedding for Eastern NC (Cape Carteret) for September. What are the odds of a hurricane on a saturday? I need empirical evidence here, please...
Also, is it ok to have a rain date of "the next weekend it's not raining" to a head count of 150? Just curious...
And what if I just cooked a pig (or 2)? Too trailer? I mean, I said eastern nc.... 1/19/2011 10:55:31 PM |

I don't think you'll be able to get good info regarding the chances of having a hurricane... Eastern NC is pretty hit or miss for September and hurricanes
As for "the next weekend it isn't raining"... Errrr if you have lots of people coming from out of town, I don't see how that would work. I would imagine if it's a Saturday, people would be getting a hotel room and would need to book in advance. Plus, if it's Cape Carteret, September isn't exactly cheap for hotels considering it's still a good time for the beach. Where exactly are you getting married in Cape Carteret?
As for the pig, cook away - we're having barbeque, too 1/19/2011 11:03:33 PM |
Gzusfrk All American 2988 Posts user info edit post |
We did a pig for ours, and it turned out REALLY well. Our guests all loved it, and the rest of the wedding was too "not trailer" enough to make up for it. It was also inexpensive. Our total food cost for 100 people was less than $500, not including the cake, and we really went overboard with food. Our favors were jars of homemade bbq sauce too.
And I agree with Sam, having a rain date on a wedding is probably not a great idea. Is your wedding outside, or are you just concerned about the possibility of a hurricane? If it's outside, having a contingency rental of tents would be easier than asking everyone to reschedule. They are expensive, but will be cheaper than throwing another wedding for 150 people (think about all that food!) 1/20/2011 7:33:26 AM |

The short answer is no it's not
As far as hurricanes go:
Quote : | "
Subject: G1) When is hurricane season ? Contributed by Neal Dorst
The Atlantic hurricane season is officially from 1 June to 30 November. There is nothing magical in these dates, and hurricanes have occurred outside of these six months, but these dates were selected to encompass over 97% of tropical activity. June 1st has been the traditional start of the Atlantic hurricane season for decades. However, the end date has been slowly shifted outward, from October 31st to November 15th until its current date of November 30th.
The Atlantic basin shows a very peaked season from August through October, with 78% of the tropical storm days, 87% of the minor hurricane days, and 96% of the major hurricane days occurring then. Maximum activity is in early to mid September." |
As far as hurricanes landing in North Carolina go, of the 13 major hurricanes to land in NC, 8 of them landed in September. That's 61% of the time.
And here's a handy graph showing all tropical storm activity in NC by month:
So if you're concerned about a hurricane affecting your wedding date, you might want to move the date to November

^ Did they happen to say what years those happened? I grew up in eastern NC and I can only remember a handful of times where there was a hurricane in September... I can mostly remember hurricane warnings that fizzled into nothing 1/20/2011 9:36:34 AM |

The major ones or the general tropical storm activity? For the graph, that's all storms since they started documenting tropical activity, which was the late 1800s. 1/20/2011 9:42:13 AM |

There was also Ernesto in 2006 and Ophelia in 2005, both in September, which aren't even included in the major hurricanes list because while they caused major flooding damage, Ophelia technically didn't make landfall and Ernesto was a tropical storm by the time it hit NC. 1/20/2011 9:47:19 AM |

Yeah I remember the big ones (Fran and Floyd) but I guess I always forget about tropical storms
^ I guess that's what I keep thinking of - situations like that where we have all these hurricane warnings and it turns out to not be much (minus the flooding issue)
I think the key here is to have a rain plan

There was also one in 1998 in September that I can't remember the name of. It did the same thing as Ophelia, skirted up the coast without making landfall but caused some serious rain/flooding problems. Only reason I remember that one is because we were having a family reunion on Hatteras and had to evacuate two days after getting there lol. 1/20/2011 10:56:34 AM |

I'm getting married in June in New Hill, and I'm having trouble finding rehearsal dinner sites around there. I figured Cary is my best bet, but I've only come up with a couple restaurants. Any suggestions from people who know the Cary/SW Raleigh area better than I? Thanks! 1/20/2011 11:55:30 AM |

^ Why not somewhere in downtown Raleigh? You'll have tons of choices then.
Also how much are you looking to spend per head? What sort of food do you want to do? Are you looking for casual? Formal?
Personally I think it would be awesome to do a rehearsal dinner at Tribeca Tavern in Cary, as long as I wasn't the one footing the bill 1/20/2011 1:54:43 PM |

^^ This may sound silly to some, but I think it'd be better if people didn't have to travel to downtown raleigh for the dinner. Most of the people that will be attending are not from this area, and will most likely be commuting to fayetteville after the dinner, so I think it'd be best to keep them in the cary/apex area.
With that said, I'd still entertain downtown ideas as well, I'm just not that familiar myself with places that could host this type of event.
As far as cost, I'd like to stay below $40 a head, but the lower the better. I'm most concerned with having a place with good food and a good atmosphere for a rehearsal dinner (aka a private room or some other isolation from the rest of the restaurant crowd since this will be a friday night thing).
What do you like best about Tribeca? I've never been there, but I have been to many other Rockytop restaurants. 1/20/2011 6:20:36 PM |

Ladies, please help me out
What flowers are in this bouquet?
I can tell white daisies (obviously), white anemones, white roses, and I think some type of pink lily... There's another pink flower I can't figure out, the small white daisy-lookin things, and the yellow ones
(I think I'm going to attempt to make this bouquet) 1/26/2011 11:30:12 AM |

I think the lillies you see are Peruvian Lillies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alstroemeria
And the other pink flowers look like light pink snapdragons to me: http://www.floweringflowers.net/2010/11/snapdragon-flowers/snapdragon-flowers-6/
The yellow ones are "Brass Buttons" I think: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cotula_barbata1.jpg

the pink and light cream flowers are either snapdragons or cream stock
I recognize cream stock as they were in my bouquet
http://www.flowerexplosion.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/5e06319eda06f020e43594a9c230972d/c/r/cream-stock.jpg
the small daisy type is wax flower...also had in my bouquet
http://www.flc.co.il/flowers/Wax%20flower%20white.jpg
and I may be wrong...but I see peonies in there. some are definitely white roses, but there are two that appear to be peonies. and they will make your bouquet very fragrant!

man... I saw my dream dress on a runway model and it looks so different than in the ad
so I went looking around again, and found these.... I have met a few of y'all in person, so how do you think these would look on my body shape?
Dress #1 (favorite, but I wish it had a shorter train)
Dress #2
Dress #3
The only thing that worries me about dress #2 is a) how would I wear a bra, and b) my sister is having her dress modified to have lace up to the neck... :\

My favorite is Dress #1, you're pretty so you don't need a really busy dress to draw attention away from your face or anything. And I think it would give you enough boob coverage so you aren't hanging out.
Dress #2 would drive me crazy having lace around my neck like that. I remember you saying you don't like stuff around your neck, right?
Dress #3 is pretty, but seems a little busy.
With that said, I'm sure you'd be gorgeous no matter what you wear. :* 1/30/2011 3:11:26 PM |
