When he first arose in the infirmary didn't he tell ben that he didn't know how he was there because the last thing he remembered was ben killing him? or did i imagine that?

he told that guy caesar that ben was the man who killed him, but i think he did say something along those lines to ben. to me it seemed like he was just trying to stay in character as locke. probably something along the lines of making everyone more likely to follow him and do what he wanted if he appeared to be someone who rose from the dead.

I think the smoke monster was created when Jacob threw his brother into the light (this was obviously the "mistake" that he referred to in his speech in last night's episode). I also think that the smoke monster sort of has Jacob's brother's soul, except that he represents a sort of pure evil (seemingly), and he only took Jacob's brother's body temporarily. Even though he is in Locke's body now, I still think he has Jacob's brother's soul. This is why he, like Jacob's brother did, wants to leave the island, but I think his intentions are now more melicious than Jacob's brother's were.
On a side note, it would've made it much easier on us if they just gave Jacob's brother a fucking name. Is it really that hard? 5/19/2010 11:39:07 PM |

I agree thats exactly what he was doing, but how the fuck could he have known that ben killed him. That was off island the day before, he obviously can't leave the island as Jacob did. He knew that locke would die, because he tricked him into believing that he needed to but there is no way MiB could've known that Ben was the culprit.

He has no name. Giving him a name at this point would only make it more confusing, and they'd have to explain why richard or jacob never called him by name. Once again, giving him a name doesn't enhance the story in any way. This isn't CSI:Bermuda

I'm not so sure they will. what if it doesn't? What if it's just Jeff? Then it's retarded and takes away the mystique.
If there is some biblical/mythical reference, fine. But if not, giving him a name at this point accomplishes nothing.

^^ yeah. it's one of the things I'd like to know about, but I don't expect to hear anything else about it.
I'd also like to know more about the ashes that were around it. They couldn't have been Jacob's ashes since he wasn't dead yet.

Ugh, magic and mystery are far more acceptable when it isn't completely random and arbitrary.
"I died, but I still appeared to Hurley as a dead person. Then I turned into a kid and didn't tell Hurley. Then I stole some of my ashes and made this fire, even though ashes have nothing to do with building a fire. I turned back into an adult and now everyone can see me, but only as long as this fire burns. Anyways, I wanted you all to have a choice, so I crashed you on this island where my followers are going to brutally antagonize you. Even though it's only by sheer luck that you've managed to survive this long, it's all going as I planned. Now whichever of you wants to be the next me, come and drink this water that I prayed over." 5/20/2010 11:06:31 AM |

heheh, that's been my problem with this show since season 2. "random and arbitrary". They don't lay out the framework so if a MacDonald's appeared from the sky it would be a normal and fitting plot point.

i like the fact that MiB doesn't have a name. it reminds me of randall flagg from the stand, who i'm sure was an influence on the character. even though he was introduced as randall flagg, he still goes by "the dark man," "the hardcase," "the tall man," "the walkin dude," and introduces himself to some people at the end as russell faraday. i think he also appears in the dark tower series with names that have the initials R.F. so it's not about what the guy's name is. it's more about what he represents, which is pure evil. the same goes for MiB. i just wish i wasn't reminded of the men in black movies any time i say MiB. 5/20/2010 12:57:51 PM |

pretty basic question here, but I dont think its ever been explained...
why does MIB want to get off of the island? and why wont Jacob allow MIB to leave the island?
what does MIB think hes going to do once he gets off the island? he's never been in the "real world" so he doesnt have a life to go back to, he's never had a job and presumably doesnt have any money, so how will he survive? With that said, why wont Jacob just allow him to leave? wouldnt that make Jacob's life a whole lot easier, if he didnt have to worry about watching MIB's every move?
like I said, its a pretty basic question, and one that has lots of implications on the show, but its something that I dont think has ever been asked or answered. 5/20/2010 4:15:19 PM |

i guess the only way i can answer that is to say what if you were told something didn't exist and you spent your life believing that. then one day you find out that that something does exist and it's bigger and grander than you could ever imagine but you were never allowed to see it. wouldn't that bug the heck out of you too?
but ferserious, i dont know 5/20/2010 4:17:35 PM |

^^I think what is implied, up to this point at least, is that if he got off the island, he wouldn't just live a normal existence. He would escape as the smoke monster and somehow destroy all life on earth. Either that, or simply him escaping would in itself end humanity somehow. He wouldn't escape as just a guy who can't find a job. At least that's what I think we're supposed to assume, or something like that, based on what we've been given. 5/20/2010 4:49:22 PM |

^^^i think they answered that aspect of it pretty well. The ghost of his mother told him that he was not from the island and that his people were from across the sea. That the woman who was claiming to be his mother actually killed her and stole him.
He knows he doesn't "belong" there. Assuming Smokey is in fact MiB/boy in black for the sake of this discussion, he wants to go "home." He never belonged on the island in his opinion, just like all of the losties.
Now, if he became something else altogether when he went into the light.. or smokey is some independent entity that simply had the form of MiB... then who knows.
Jacob won't let him leave because (i'm pretty sure) his "mother" told him they could never leave. And that could also be something that he knew about/understood once he drank the magically blessed wine, and that Jack may now understand. Or it could be something that is revealed in the finale.

^^I think Jacob's brother became something else when Jacob threw him into the light. This is why Jacob said in Tuesday night's episode that he made a mistake, and that that mistake could lead to them and everyone they cared about dying. I think he has retained something that was unique to MiB (i.e. his soul or something), but that the smoke monster is what he is now (either that or, like you said, the monster always existed and Jacob's brother being thrown into the light allowed him to not only escape but take his body), and if he were to escape the island, he would escape as the smoke monster, with all the capability for killing people that he currently has. 5/20/2010 5:06:54 PM |

^Just because they showed the Ben and Locke events at the same time they showed the Jack events in the show doesn't mean they happened at the same time. Yeah I don't think Ben is going to go along with MiB's plans. I actually wouldn't be surprised if Ben became the new protector of the island. He has the most motive, he loves the island and has been protecting it for years anyway. Plus showing Jack becoming the new Jacob before the finale almost assures that he won't be taking Jacob's place. 5/21/2010 8:07:56 AM |

thats a very basic answer/response to my question. I realize MIB wants to leave because he was told he's not from the island, and Jacob doesnt want him to leave because his mother said so.
There has got to be bigger implications than that, Jacob wouldnt be going through all this trouble just because "his mom told him not to" let his brother leave. The show is implying that there is some greater, earth-shattering reason why MIB wants to leave the island and why Jacob cant let him leave. Like if MIB leaves, then the world will end or something. It will be very stupid if Jacob watched, recruited and brought all these people to the island, put them through all this stuff, got himself killed and found a successor to his position post-mortem, all to keep his promise to his mother. A promise that he doesnt even know the reason why - his mother never told him why MIB cant leave the island, she just simply said that he cant.
ugh, this is frustrating, it seems like such a major part of the plot, but could very well go unanswered, or the writers will think the promise to Jacob/MIB's mother was reason enough to keep them on the island and thus put everyone through the process throughout the duration of the show/series5/21/2010 1:54:10 PM |

The way i see it, the island is like a laptop and the light is the a battery. This laptop has the server to the rest of the world. People come on the island do their shit and wear down the battery. By the time we get to 2007 when Dogan tries to revive sayid the battery is already dead. Luckily the entity that possesses MiB/Locke is the power cable. But if the power cable is disconnected then shit hits the fan, y2k, shearon harris, wtc, peyton strickland, nael becomes the owner, etc...
