1000 will go from 13.35 to 13.37 and 1000 will go from 12.1199 to 13.37, so far about 5 people have been able to update lol. it apparently worked for about 5 seconds 2 minutes before it was supposed to go live and those 5 people were able to get it.

It works absolutely awesome as a GPS. The only potential problem is if you want to take a call while using navigation. If you do take a call it will pick back up when you disconnect.
The main thing I love about it is no updates to purchase and install. The maps have the most recent info that is available online. 6/24/2010 1:45:30 PM |

yeah, I use mine regularly and haven't had any problem with it getting me where I wanted to go. It just might take you through BFE in order to get there though. lol. Did have an issue where I was coming out of a side road and it thought I could turn left but there was just a median there but luckily it reroutes pretty fast. I do have a problem with it overheating after 45min or so of navigation causing it to stop charging when in the car dock. Ended up getting a vent mount which solved the problem.

Rat, Google Navigation is incredible.... they have always been spot on for me, and while in the mountains of NC actually outperformed my Garmin unit (was losing signal in the mtns and sending me LONG ways out of the way). My WIFE was quick to say "The nexus one has not led us wrong once, where the garmin has fucked us 3 times this trip... lets just sell this thing"
The only negative I can think of is the draw on battery... if you leave it charging, no problem.... if you are going to be using it for many hours non-stop I expect the device would get really hot due to the use and battery being connected to the charger.
I've never heard anyone say a bad thing about Google's Nav (well, except Tom Tom, haha).
^^ yeah, same for T-Mobile. I cant recall what happened last time I took a call while using it.... imagine it went right back to the maps b/c I dont recall anything weird.

my wife and i have had our droids for a few months now, and i've noticed that some calls between each are incredibly low volume. it has nothing to do with the media volume within the call- it's like it's gated down on the connect. we have to disconnect and recall each other to get a normal volume. this happens about every 7 to 10 calls. is this just how droid and/or verizon works? 6/24/2010 2:47:45 PM |

no volume issues here, granted I don't think I've talked to anyone on another android-based device. Did have an issue with no volume on a couple of the custom roms and would have to turn the speakerphone on and off to get the ear piece working again. Only real issue I've had was the echo or hiss when on a call but going into the programming menu and changing the vocode to 13k instead of EVRC fixed that. Tried EVRC-B but apparently that's only available in certain areas and I couldn't make calls when using it. 6/24/2010 3:12:18 PM |

it happens on both ways and i haven't noticed it on any other calls (droid and non). she'll be low to me, and vice-versa, regardless of who makes the call. i don't have a warranty and it's not an issue i can replicate, so i doubt there's anything verizon could do, right? i haven't dropped the phone, gotten it wet, and it's in a body glove case. i deal with it, but i'd rather not if possible

no i usually hold with left hand, thumb near usb port, fingers between volume and camera button.
what's weird though is it doesn't seem to be a "fixable" issue in a call- talking louder or physically maneuvering the phone and around it doesn't change anything. it's like the phone decides "this call will be at -20db. don't like that? try calling back and i'll see if i can bump you up to 0db"

Ok, I'm completely fed up with my Eris. I don't understand how a PHONE can be such a shitty phone. This is my 2nd Eris btw. I just had it replaced under warranty a week ago. As a toy, it's great. As a phone, it's a complete piece of shit. I'm a business user and it just doesn't cut it. Right now I'm trying to decide whether to go back to a boring old BB that actually works for what I need the most or try another Android phone. I know part of the issue is Android's juvenile state but I don't know how much.
Has anyone else owned both the Eris & a Droid or Incredible? Preferably someone that actually depends on their phone for business and does 20+ emails a day as well as 10-20 calls. Am I just too much of a business user to get along with Android or am I just stuck with a piece of shit phone? 6/24/2010 7:27:23 PM |

dave421 All American 1391 Posts user info edit post |
Randomly (but especially when it's on longer than a day), I'll hit the send button, wait for the screen to come up, start dialing a name, wait for it to figure out the 3 buttons I hit, select the number I want to call, wait for it to recognize that I've hit something & start dialing, finally talk to whoever I wanted to call 15 seconds after the whole process started.
Other times, I'll hit the send key, the person I want to call is listed at the top so I hit send again. The list then updates to correctly show the last number I dialed and then the phone starts to dial it (number other than I wanted). Then it gets more fun. Sometimes I'll hit end and it ends. Other times it won't do anything so I'll hit it again, still nothing, hit it again, finally hangs up then immediately dials again because it recognized 2 of the inputs.
The email app just plain blows. Perhaps I've missed it but my smallest gripe is that there's no way to select multiple messages if you want to mark them as read (like when I'm sitting at my desk). Seriously? WTF is that? I currently have it set to check every 15 minutes and it'll do that great for several hours, maybe even a whole day. Then it'll start checking every 45 minutes to an hour. My old one was worse. It would continue on until it would only check when I actually pick the phone up to do something. 15 minutes is 14 minutes longer than I'd prefer to wait but I can deal with it. 45 minutes is purely unacceptable but I've been putting up with it for the past several months because I liked the features. Now I don't care. I just want a phone that I can actually use again. 6/24/2010 7:49:16 PM |

^^ NON-gmail app. We're stuck with POP3 at work right now. I also already have 2 gmail accounts coming in and don't want to deal with forwarding the 3rd. I don't leave any apps open. I exit out of everything specifically to keep it from slowing down more and I rarely run anything other than mail, gmail, browser, & phone now. Finally, you mention another petty annoyance. I get gmail notifications in Chrome on my mac before my phone. Not a big deal but it's kinda lame.
^^^ I agree with that but I can't help but wonder how much of it is Android as well. I don't want to go spend $400-500 on another phone only to have the same issues. Every review about an Android phone talks about how awesome it is but none of them focus on what I'm looking for.

I'll check out k9. Not interested in rooting. There's not much going on with Eris since it was pretty much abandoned as soon as it came out. I bought my first one right after they came out. Unfortunately I didn't realize that it was going to become the red-headed step child of the Android world. Stability is a priority. I can't afford to have it randomly crapping out on me.
I hope that it's not Android but I can't help but to believe that the platform's maturity is just not there yet. The huge speed advances made from 1.6 to 2.0 and then 2.0 to 2.2 are a great example of that I think. If I do get another Android phone, it's definitely going to be something that's getting 2.2 or else is extremely stable rooted with a 2.2 rom

Well there's only 2 things that it can be. This is on both my old Eris and a brand new one. I think the likelihood of it being Eris are pretty good. I know a lot of people that use their phones for work and it's all texting and gmail. Are they using theirs as I use mine? Like I said before, as an entertainment/multimedia device, it's great. It's specifically with the phone & mail that it's lacking horribly. If they're not making/receiving a lot of calls & sending/receiving a lof of non-gmail emails, then they're not going to see what I'm talking about.6/24/2010 11:05:30 PM |

^^I agree about the size of the community but when I look I see a bunch of people talking about how awesome the phone is and look at the cool new theme I made. It just seems that there's not nearly the development with it. I guess I'm going to need to start looking again since it has been a while. Also, pretty much everyone that I know that works for a small business still uses pop3 hosted accounts. The cost of exchange just isn't justifiable for many of us. I'm looking at moving us over to the free google apps but I'm not sure what's going to happen there yet.
