" | Wow you really didn't think before you posted did you? Yes he will have better talent however he will also be playing in a conference which has much better talent which will nullify this. Statistical comparisons between conferences are generally stupid. Have you ever heard of the term "apples to oranges"? Because right now you seem to be comparing apples to nuclear warheads.
Quote : | "I think the so-called personality problems are blown out of proportion." |
The fact that he isn't already at a major college program seems to indicate otherwise. His track record at Winthrop was impressive enough that many major programs would have given him a shot but for some reason they all passed. I wonder why?
I am concerned that he is a Herb Sendek with an attitude problem.3/24/2011 3:33:12 PM |

got this on my news ticker today
http://msn.foxsports.com/collegebasketball/story/Sean-Miller-happy-coaching-arizona-Wildcats-in-ncaa-tournament-032311
It says "Miller has no regrets leaving Xavier." I thought, at first, that this was a clear indication of his disinterest in coming here. But after seeing it flash across my ticker 100 times and thinking on it, he had some pretty good stuff going on at Xavier when he bounced to Arizona... Maybe it's an indication that he doesn't mind leaving something good at Arizona for something with the potential to be better...

^^ he has been moving up. look at the competition. he went from the big south, with such powerhouses as radford and vmi, to the mvc, which is a multi-bid league. heck, bill self went from oral roberts (lol) to tulsa, to illinois, and then kansas. he was around marshall's age when he was at oral and tulsa. he's young still, and the fact that he's not in the big time is no surprise, but he's right where most great coaches were at that point in their career.
let's get someone with a lot of tournament experience. no one has made more appearances recently in tournament games than this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6Mh-3Lz4RM&feature=related 3/24/2011 3:51:55 PM |

and at oral roberts his major accomplishment was an NIT berth. As soon as he started taking Tulsa to the NCAA tournament a school from a major conference took a chance on him.
Marshall took Winthrop to the NCAA tournament pretty consistently (granted most of it was first round exits) but for some reason he has been passed over by a bunch of better opportunities than Wichita State. There is most likely a reason for this.3/24/2011 4:00:19 PM |

MVC schools are typically seen as better launching pads straight to the major conferences. The fact that a Big South coach got overlooked should be expected. When do good coaches from the conferences that regularly get 16 seeds (NEC, Big South, SWAC, MEAC) ever jump to major conferences.
This was the end of his 4th year at Wichita. Steve Alford spent 4 seasons in the MVC before moving up, and Bruce Webber spent 5. Both had prior experience in major conferences as assistants or players, so the lack of experience on that front might hurt Marshall, but when you factor in his experience and results, he's done a great job and his teams always look great.
He stuck around Winthrop a long time, but he's from that area so maybe he just liked it there?
I've yet to see any substantial evidence that he's the weirdo everyone claims he is.
Quote : | "Tell that to Redrum on PP" |
PP is for old men and retards. The MVC sent multiple teams a few years in a row up til 2007. They are comparable with the CAA and I'm pretty sure they've sent more teams in the past decade than the WAC or the post-Big East looting C-USA.

1. Bruce Pearl 2. Tom Izzo 3. Rick Barnes 4. Sean Miller 5. Frank Martin 6. some 7. mid 8. major 9. guys 10. Gregg Marshall
I'm guessing that's what most of our fan's "lists" look like.
There hasn't been a single mid major guy some of you will even admit to considering. That's pretty silly and it's already been proven here that hiring a mid major guy can really pay off much better than some of you claim.

^^^^I hope you all are right. I haven't heard anything but the same hearsay everyone else has (his college of charleston move was on the surface a dick move) however the fact that there is a reputation is a little worrisome especially given his long term stay at Winthrop despite his success. If we are looking at coaches currently in the NIT I just like the style of Anthony Grant's teams a lot more. I love watching teams that press on defense and would definitely look at him before I looked a gregggggg marshall. His teams just seem more exciting to watch.

Herb Sendek got wins and got us to the tournament however there was no hype around the team because it was boring (this is coming from a Sendek supporter fwiw). You can afford to be boring if you are having very high levels of success (Wisconsin) but I am concerned that Marshall won't have the personality to recruit high level talent and therefore will have at best a moderate level of success. Grant doesn't seem to have a reputation (founded or not) of being a wackjob so why not take a chance on him first? 3/24/2011 4:23:36 PM |

9 coaches that should be considered before Marshall IMO. (not necessarily in order) 1)Stevens 2)Grant 3)Brownell 4)Mack 5)Alford 6)Buzz 7)Dave Rose 8)Brey 9)Smart
you could throw in miller and barnes and wright and the like, but I find those names to be far less realistic than my already pretty unrealistic top 3

grant just got to alabama. i know people are convinced you can just steal guys easily from football schools, but you're forgetting that football schools often have the $$$ sitting around to keep these guys.
when's the last time someone stole a great coach from a football school, anyway? why's barnes still in texas? what about donovan? thad matta? i'm sure he's a great coach but i don't get the "oh, we can steal him, it's a fb school" logic. there's no precedent.
and yeah, let's go after clemson's coach. that nc state mystique will win him over. 3/24/2011 4:35:09 PM |

Weber? Did you mean Webber, as in Chris? Is he interested in a coaching career? Cause I know you aren't talking about us seriously being anything more than a lateral move for a guy at a Big 10 school that almost won a title there.
My list is pretty simple:
1. Sean Miller 2. if he says no, get Chris Mooney, but if someone else gets him... 3. try Steve Alford 4. if we get to this point, get ready for Sid Lowe II

"The vote had been taken. It was unanimous. John Calipari was leaving. He was going to accept the NC State job.
Every assistant on the private jet flying through the spring night in 2006 from Memphis to Raleigh had his hand up. Assistant John Robic, who had been with Calipari at UMass, voted with his leg. It was their way of assuring the coach that they would all make the move to the new school with him."
